Many thanks for this most expansive video. I have a few older lenses that have developed fungus, but I now feel totally confident to tackle the problem. I’ve ordered all the bits 'n pieces from Amazon, and I’ll be cracking on later this week.

I will try on an old enlarger lens but cleaning with distilled water after hydrogen peroxide should not hurt. Cool video. Thank you.

Yeah its good to do some testing in a cheap lens with a lot of fungus, just to see how much can be done, many times it will work. But of course in other lenses the fungus can be so bad that it's not possible to clean all fungus away. And the distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxid should not hurt but it can maybe take away the black ink on the side of the lens element, but it can be re-inked with a fine brush and pure black ink. Some lenses maybe have a softer coating so do not put much pressure on the lens tissue, and only use the tissue wet with water, Hydrogen Peroxid or lighter fluid, take good care to not! use Acetone on plastic, because it will damage the plastic. Hey, great and helpful video! I did the same with an Sekor C 127mm, works quite similar. Just one big problem for me: the most fungus or dust sits in a part which I don't know how to unlock. It's the lens you see at 10:52, but not the side which is at the top, it should be the backside of this lense. Do you know how to get the lense free (like on the other side of the front-lense-group)? Is there a possibility to get the black ring unscrewed, it looks like a thread but I can't unlock it. Would be awsome if you have some advice for me! Thanks a lot mate!!

Mike, thanks for your videos. I have a Mamiya Sekor C 55mm. The focus wheel was quite stiff, and sounded abrasive. I think there might be dust inside the helicoid. Lately the focus wheel completely stopped turning! It's stuck! Please can you help me? What can I do to solve this? Thanks man.

Would I be able to remove the rear lens group from a Mamiya 645 80m 2.8 N using a rubber tool like that as well? has some haze I want to clean off, but don't want to have to dismantle the whole lens. Thanks!

By experience, It's simply a feeling how hard should a small screw be thighten.

Hi Mike, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I just got my hands on an RZ67 kit, and it included two old lenses "as is". It was a really good deal for just the body, and the seller added the lenses as a bonus. Both have fungus, the 90mm is really bad. So I am considering trying to clean them myself. They are RB lenses though (Sekor C 50mm and Sekor 90mm) - will this technique work the same? Cheers, and thank you!

You can get them at aliexpress. Search for lens repair rubber. They cost around 20 bucks.

I will have a go on it . First I have to think about a good strategy and working method . I guess the first step will be to dissolve the glue. I know that that xylene is a good candidate. I will keep you informed if I have results so we can learn from eachother

I managed to remove the second front lens group from the mount by removing the setting paint with acetone. Next I have to use a Xacto knife to gently bent the aluminium riveted edge of the mount that holds the lens group. After this step the lens group slides out of the mount by gently pressing it at the opposite side. I marked the sides of the two lenses so I will be able to align them as before. Xylene was used to soften the optical glue ( Canada balsam ? ) . Xylene and optical tissue was applied to clean the surface from glue residue, grim, fungus??? I am now waiting for optical glue to re-glue them. I will just use mechanical alignment as I assume that optical and mechanical centres will be the same.

@@marcvandevoorde1877 Oooh, great Marc, I'm just right now working on a an old Helios 44M, where I try to separate the front inner cemented lens group, and I have first try the Xylen next try was Acetone but non (0) seems to work, and right now the lens group has been in Cellulose Thinner for around 2 hours. I also make a time-Lapse video about the lens separate process, but maybe I should just try the Xylen again and let it stay a longer time. How long did you let the lens group stay in the Xylen? I have soaked it for roughly one hour. If it is glued with Canada balsam it should get soft with xylene. There are few materials ( polymers ) that are resistant against Xylene . Only teflon based polymers , Kalrez and PEEK . All others will get soft or swell in the end. Maybe I have to mention that I had to use some radial force to slide them of each other .Did you ever tried to glue a lens group ?
