I have a song that goes from f to a then to c to d… it’s only four chords and everything is a root and fifth power chord. I play the bass. So I am looking for ways to make the song feel like it’s moving forward and seeing what other notes I can progress the song with. I am wondering how I find out a key to the song with only Four notes. And if the first note I start on is f in this particular part of the song is the key of this part f? I have looked at the notes of the rest of the song and they are all natural notes. Except for the bridge which has a C sharp. I have looked up the key of a major and a minor also because the lowest note and the first note we use at the beggining of the song is A. And I find all natural Notes in the key of a minor. But then we have the C sharp in the bridge and I know that could almost be a a minor scale. But since the part of the song has a C sharp also has a f natural it couldn’t be a minor… so is the C sharp in the song just a borrowed chord? Or an accidental? This is the song here kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWuNusmtpbiYk5M.htmlsi=l7TuU63r9CMkU_-g We changed the tuning of the guitar and remade a song that we like… anyone that understands theory let me know cause I’m Trying to spice up the bass line on a few parts. I guess I should just follow victor Wooten advice and if it sounds good do it and hope I don’t need the theory. The theory is in the tool box in the trunk of the car and we hope the car doesn’t break down

Hey Sean, I am not a gospel musician, I actually play brazilian music on guitar. How can I get to know the gospel standards featured in your videos? When you run through segments of the song I have no reference point. Would love to see a list of common songs to know so I can learn to sing them and thus internalize some of the incredible content you are putting out for us. Thanks

Thanks for saying 2-5-1 of relative minor. I think it's a better way of looking at it. Example: In the key of E major, using G#7 to get to the 6th/relative minor (C#m). G# is 3rd in the key of E, but G#7 doesn't exist in E, and has no harmonic function in that key. In the key of C#m, on the other hand, G#7 has a clear function: it's the 5th, the dominant chord that leads to the 1.

You could also just simplify the whole thing and say the major scale has seven modes from which you can create chord patterns using secondary dominants that lead into modes of the same key (patterns which sometimes resemble each other but are obviously not the same). It's all just one key with multiple uses and points of view, unless you change keys or scale, which you can then adjust to in the same way.

Thanks for the video---but if you are trying to reach the people who do not understand 7-3-6- or 2-5-1 or any other progressions---perhaps you can do examples in C or F---(18 mins in)-I don't understand---but I'm sure it helped those who already know what you are taking about.
