I have transposed this to F today and did the first warm-up/technique session of the day. I've been practicing inversions on and off since long, but the exercise with this specific rhythm is really something new. I created my own ireal pro script which I'll play 3-4 times on a weekly basis going through the circle of 5ths (Bb would be n next). So thanks again for this great exercise!

I can see in your left hand, sometimes you play with the index finger first, and then the pinky and the thumb at he same time (e.g.1:13, 1:20). And you also will play with the index finger, then the pinky, then the thumb (1:12) That means you play middle note of the chord first, then the both end, not necessarily starting from the pinky to the thumb.😉 As a beginner, I just don't know we can play like this, cos I always just strictly follow playing from the pinky, index finger😮 and the thumb.😅

Hi! Don’t worry too much about this to start with - I alternate with fingerings and there isn’t really a set structure to it. It’s more important to get the shapes down. Hope you found the video useful!

Ah...Adam you inspire me again! 😱 When dealing with unfamiliar chord, I always write down the combination of bass+the triad chord on my sheet as a reminder when I play songs at church, e.g. Dm7 as D+F. But how come I just never thought of writing it as a F/D ! When writing this way, sometimes will help figuring out the sequence relationship between chords.

​​@@thekeyscoach I have just put it into practice for last Sunday worship.😅 Since I'm still not familiar with Bm7 and Em7 and these chords just come together closely, I re-write them into D/B and G/E for quick learning.🤣 I used to write them as (B+D), (E+G) to remind the bass and right hand. 🤣🤣🤣

I'm confused. Why did you choose Dm7? What progression are you using?

Great video. Loved the Am7 "trick". Am7 is just a "C" chord with an "A" in the bass. After spending some time going around the circle of fifths and looking at all the chords and there relative minors I was shocked that I never knew this "Trick" (for lack of a better word at the moment) or had forgotten it. Then I tried the same thing with Major 7 chords and it was quite an eye opener. Quite the light bulb moment. Thanks for this. It is always great learning something new everyday. Can't wait for what is next.

Throw in a bVII and you got yourself a song. I'm still at the struggling beginner phase, and I'm trying to learn thoroughbass. A Perfect Authentic Cadence (PAC) has the tonic in the soprano, and is the most pleasing. I made a comment to my piano teacher about my method books. I noticed that many of their beginner songs ended with a 3 in the bass and a 1 in the soprano. And then it hit me. A PAC. Or a I6.

Another smashing video Adam, thanks :). Inversions and rhythm are definitely two of the most important elements in getting a good sound for newer players, imo. Thinking of the hands as being split vertically can help. The thumbs are really important for rhythm, 3rds/5ths and the little/ring fingers for melody. When I started to think that way it made a big difference to my playing. Don't know if this is just me or if this is some kind of taught technique? It's kind of how I think of singer/songwriters playing the piano, as opposed to classical performers. Cheers Adam, thanks for your fantastic efforts. Probably because I've been playing for a long time, I actually find it more difficult to not use inversions because I'm so used to using them. It's obviously a matter of taste but for me, I'd tend to use the 'smudge' as an accent device, p'raps to help vary the perception of rhythm or to slightly vary the sound quality. IMO using it on every chord might diminish it's effectiveness... YMMV...

Absolutely you can use those as well! They work particularly well on dominant 7 chords

Interesting progression; I first thought F is the key. Then I realized it's actually C with a b7 which is not in key. I know that b7 is used a lot in some pop and rock progressions. Am I right?

Absolutely! b7 is used loads in pop and rock progressions - and lots of other styles too! We’re in the key of C here and flat7 is Bb. Hope that helps!
