How to make Zimbabwean Sadza (and serve it)
How to make sadza is a pretty simple question to answer. This Zimbabwe sadza recipe by Rumbie from www.zimbokitchen.com is easy to follow even for newbies. I first introduce you to the key utensils required and then do step by step sadza cooking until we serve it with some typical Zimbabwean relish. In this recipe I add my own favorite spin...I add a bit of margarine to add flavor to the sadza. It's yum-yum try it at home!

For those in the US, the best cornmeal to use is the "Quaker White Corn Meal". Pretty much the same stuff we use back home.

Thank you a ton Rumbie! Best tutorial I've come across so far! 😄👌 now my mother won't say I'm a failure 😂😂😂 I'm officially "marriage marerial" 😹 and not to forget this video is also helping me improve my Shona, so thanks. 😘😘
A friend who was visiting Zimbabwe introduced us to sadza after he came back home (in NL) a long time ago. As a child I did *not* appreciate the blandness (so I will have to try your twist! :) ) but I found it a fun textured food to eat (being bored with mainly boiled potatoes as the starchy component of the food). Thank you for this one! (For those screaming 'cultural appropriation' I'd like to point out that corn is native to the South Americas not Africa, so shut up ;). I am just very happy to be able to follow someone's recipe and make a fine tasting dish to enjoy.)
This was a great tutorial very straightforward and easy to follow. Thank you. And ignore these people that keep talking about the butter part, you clearly mentioned that was optional

My Zimbabwean friend here posted this dish on Facebook. I Googled it and found your video. Your instructions are very clear. I cannot wait to make it and try it. Thanks for sharing!
I am from Austria ( Europe/ close to germany) and we call this mais- wheal or ‚fufu‘- ‚Polenta’, near like you can read on the packet!! We cook porridge ( the consistence like ‚ püree’ or ‚ risotto’ or ‚ griesmus‘...) with this since hundred of years and eat it with sugar on it and fruit compott beside, or with ‚gulasch‘ -a stew made from (mostly) cow- meat- pieces with a lot of onion and a spicy red- paprican sauce!!! Also wth a stew of the organs - the heart and lounges of a cow or also a pig (we call it ‚ beuschel’) - its a trational meal and gets sadly more and more away...

jusKurius when there is too much raw uncooked meal in the sadza
@AnywheresArt
3 жыл бұрын
jusKurius this is a state when the initial maize meal and water mixture is not given enough time to reach a temperature where it becomes a thick, bubbling, lava-like paste before adding more maize meal to reach the final thickness. What then happens is that the additional maize meal will not bind with the paste, creating a mixture that stays loose and sticks to the hand when you try to roll it. That is mbodza and can sometimes lead to “gupuro”.
Thanks Rumbi. My friend adds fresh milk. The sadza will have a sweet smell which I don't like. Some people that I have introduced to sadza, think that it's too much work and others say it's tasteless ha ha ha.
Brilliant video thank you so much , will try adding the butter thing Lol !!!

Is Maize Meal the same thing as cornmeal? Here in the United States Cornmeal is very common. It comes in lots of varieties and is used to make cornbread, corn muffins, etc. But I never see Maize Meal in stores here.
@MoominUmma
9 жыл бұрын
Cornmeal is the same as maizemeal. Maize = corn. It's known as polenta as well, so you could easily buy polenta in supermarkets, though it is more yellow.
Lol I'm a kid I wanna surprise my family.

People in the comments have problems with English comprehension. She never said you add butter to sadza, she said you add butter when you are having the porridge (at the simmering stage) as your breakfast. You would add butter, sugar and a little bit of salt. Sadza is not breakfast, neither is it porridge. It's a hard starch to be served with relish e.g. meat, vegetables and soup. Sadza is a substitute for rice, potatoes and macaroni.
Are we going to all pretend on this thread that it was really butter" that was used 🙄🤔 she said margarine and there is a huge difference between the two. If you've ever handled cornmeal it's basically grits. Southerners often make shrimp and grits cheesy grits some people do a sweet take on them or in this traditional recipe it seems that it's to be served plain. I would ONLY use butter on my grits never margarine 😩 I say whatever works but keep it authentic if it is to remain true to its roots.💯👍
