Great work, thanks for this. I've just put a new Pioneer head unit in my Prado, and did buy an after-market converter for the steering wheel controls. But I was mystified as to how it worked - how so many buttons could send signals over basically 2 wires, one of which is ground! I was even thinking maybe it was serial RS232 data. But now I know - not RS232, but much simpler and very clever. I wish I'd seen this before I did the job.

Very interesting got all that and understand that! . Except It doesn't appear to work like that exactly on my 1999 SAAB 93 Aero. What happens is the buttons are connected to the SID ( SAAB Info Display) and 2 wires called Ebuss plug into 2 pins on what was originally a SAAB branded Clarion Stereo. As I have a Chinese android with a learn function for the buttons it should learn whatever the resistance for each button is. however putting a meter across it doesn't reveal resistance looking at it with DC volts it jumps around all over the place and doesn't change when you hit any of the buttons( they work with the original stereo) I think it might be data. Someone on a forum said it was voltage ( which would vary with resistance) I'm reluctant to just plug the 2 wires in ( not worried about blowing up the stereo but if it shorts out something electronic in the SAAB it's going to be both difficult to find a replacement and expensive.

If it’s voltage you can get what’s called “electronic resistor” it converts voltage to resistance, it’s an IC chip.

@@MaxELECTRONICS Interesting, I just searched that and it looks like you can do it with a pair of MAX5160 digital pots. I will have to stick a scope on there to try and see what's actually on those lines. If it is data then It will be easier to hack into the wiring elsewhere. However if it's voltage as suggested in the SAAB forum then the digital resistor approach will likely work

It depends, check if your pioneer has learning function for the steering control, then any steering control will work. If it doesn’t you can try to see if it’s gonna work as is, if not you’ll need to resolder your steering wheel resistors.

I've wondered how just one wire could control so many functions. It's all because the radio looks for (and acts on) the resistence between the single wire and ground.

First check if your head unit has a learning function, sometime they have learning function and you can just learn buttons digitally on head unit without any external adapters. If it doesn’t then you can use 2k resistors to probe out what happens, so power the head unit and then short the 2k resistor between the control and ground, see what function it triggers, then 4K then 6k ect (just 2k resistors in series) unfortunately there’s no website that has all this info, you can try contacting the manufacturer and asking them

My Mazda steering controls seem to work backwards. I have not analysed the circuit, but based on my multimeter readings: no buttons = 5KΩ, then it drops off depending on the button: mute = 2KΩ, mode = 1KΩ, down = 550Ω, up = 300Ω, vol+ = 150Ω, vol- = 55Ω. I think I need to somehow reverse this so no buttons = no resistance, then it adds resistance on pressing of buttons.

Hey Max. Awesome vid. I’m having issues with a Sony in a gen 1 Mini Cooper. I bought the control module adapter but it’s intermittent. Found your vid and curious: the Sony (MEX 5300) has programable functions. Like mapping a game console controller on PC. You select the function on the head unit and it prompts you to press a button on the steering wheel. Is it safe to assume I would just need to directly wire my steering wheel leads to a 3.5mm Jack and the Sony head unit would map based on resistance and as such no need to solder resistors?
