I live in Texas in Texas so luckily in my area we don’t need to store them. I get 6 months easy on the sax strapped down…. Right out of the package vandoren red Java. Altissimo into the 6th octave with ease.

Really helpful video Donna - thank you. I had never considered wet storage before but will give it a try. I must say, that I am a fan of Fibracell reeds for the tenor and they last a long time with very good bottom end tone. Will check out all the things you suggest in this video.

Thanks for this video! I am a tenor sax play and I tend to play many hours in a week. I tried the Listerine method but it didn't work out. What do you think about storing reeds with the humidity packets? I believe I have 69%.

I used to use the Rico Reed Vitalizer at 73%. That worked well in NY, where there's humidity, but it didn't work for me here in CA.

Yippee, first comment! You might get to read it? This clip was very interesting for me with your talk about reed strengths. I am a small person, ie with small lungs, and have found that using cane tenor reeds of 1.5 strength on my alto sax allows me to get many more notes out of a breath than alto reeds of 2 and upwards. I chanced upon a tenor reed a few months ago and it's great. I can bend notes easily, too. Any thoughts, Donna?

Small lungs doesn't matter in terms of reed strength. I personally don't have my students play on anything lower than a 2 strength to start. 1 1/2 on cane is not strong enough to play pitches in tune, especially higher ones....

Thanks for your comments. I have tried playing with 2 1/2's when I first started playing about 18 months ago, but found 2's simply easier to blow. My parents were both woodwind players and teachers but I grew up with the Beatles etc and guitars. Perhaps because of my past, I don't find it hard to play high notes in tune, although I don't have "perfect pitch". Thanks again...

Legeres can last quite a while - a few months. Remember, the tips are still fragile, and you should clean them once a week (soap and cold water is fine). You can store them in any reed case - you don't need humidity or Listerine.

I can't find any videos on how to use the ATG system and I don't have the DVD or booklet showing me how to use it. Is there any way that I can learn to use it properly without buying a new ATG system?

Have you looked on Tom's KZread channel? He's got lots of videos, or search his site. Did you buy the ATG system? If so, you can probably contact him and see if he would send you links.

I quit getting picky over reeds. The only reeds I avoid are d addario. 2 to 3 strength no biggie. Usually it’s one out of ten I might toss. That’s it never file or soak. Just crack the thing loose off my mouth piece and wet it play. 5 mins in its warm and ready:

I believe Lenny Pickett. Just play, blow blow blow harder blow softer. Yeah that one’s different than that one…. Legere reeds just are always stuffy imo I tried them all. The best in my opinion for synthetic or hybrid synthetic are the plasticover but otherwise nah. Otherwise red Java is fine.
