"$80 bucks. That's what I spend on a happy hour!" I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this way when deciding if a piece of decor is worth the cost. 😅

We replaced the horrible yellow plastic handles on vintage wood kitchen cabinets with elegant white Ikea handles and it transformed my kitchen. It was meant to be a short term remedy. I hoped I could convince my husband to redo the whole kitchen after we moved in. Now I am so glad we just changed the handles. It's inspired me to follow the vintage theme with vintage pieces like a bright blue enamelware milk jug and hand painted porcelain canisters that are displayed on the window sill. My mint green and peach kitchen is now a place I not only love to cook in, I love to sit in it. The eyesore was those yellow cabinet handles! Getting rid of them was the start. Oh, and throwing out the old plastic overhead light for a really nice coppery one that hangs right over the kitchen table. Nick, your video reminded me of how we transformed our home. Thank you. And to anyone else out there, definitely, small details can make all the difference. Before you rip out a whole kitchen or go to some other extraordinary expense, think of the smaller changes you might make. Cabinet handles and lighting saved us a bundle in just one room.

I love that you did that. I know so many people who practically bankrupted themselves because they had to " rip out the kitchen" and have a contractor put in a $30,000 kitchen that looks cold and feels impersonal

I want to find the right wallpaper, although it’s expensive, I want it to fit the room and style. Same with art. I don’t want to buy just anything. I’m saving up to get exactly what I want. Baby steps!

I hear you, but remember you can upgrade from “enjoyable/cost-effective” art to your “dream” art as you run across it. I finally own the negative-space cellist statue in my thumbnail (by a Canadian artist) which I fell in love with in a stranger’s home in 1984, but I’m glad I enjoyed other pieces until I stumbled across it recently with some money saved up. I don’t recommend “interim” wallpaper, of course! 😆 I envy your self-control for keeping your space bare - what special days you’ll have each time your patience pays off! And I know what it’s like to treasure a magical find for decades once it’ been found, so no criticism here. Only good vibes.✌️

I am loving your videos. Some of them have validated my choices over the years. Some of them make me chuckle because been there done that (those are the what not to do videos). 😄 Designers helped me narrow my design style to rustic transitional. I inherited a couple of mid-century Danish modern pieces, a couple of farm house style cabinets, and have filled in with pieces considered "transitional", (I was told that is between traditional and modern). Clean lines, some of them have a beat up look that it is intentional. It works because the wood colors are rich; 60 year old teak, 70 year old barn house, some new dark cherry, and distressed new pieces mostly with an orange undertone. Somehow it all works for me, it feels warm and cozy.

Weirdly enough, when I've viewed houses in the past, panel molding and wallpaper made me instantly suspicious. They look good, but I always wonder what is the condition of the wall behind the molding and/or wallpaper. This is especially true in older houses where I've found these things can be used to hide damage and/or cracks in the wall. So. For anyone looking to buy a house: be wary of moldings and wallpaper! You don't know what they're hiding.

Great video! You’re very right about purchasing only what suits your style. And here’s the thing, saying yes to style means saying no, no, no a whole lot. After 20 years in the same house, once all the functional upgrades were done, I finally got to remodel the kitchen and discovered something about design style along the way. After hours and days and weeks of browsing Pinterest I realized that over all these years I’d imagined about 4 different kitchens. Picking one meant giving up three. There are French country elements that I love, and in my imagination they were possible. But now even though I’ve got a hefty bank loan and lots of choices, I have to give up on all things country French FOREVER because that’s not the style I chose. I had to face the fact that I will probably never ever ever have those things. On a small scale we do this all the time. When we see a gorgeous item with a strong style (or size or color or...) that doesn’t fit our look, then we need to face facts. “Even though that thing is absolutely gorgeous and I love it love it love it, I need to wave it goodbye.” And with luck maybe a friend of mine does that style and I can visit and enjoy that kind of thing there. And they can come over and enjoy what they don’t have.

I have a combination of modern and classic/traditional design styles. I think the creativity comes in with just 'knowing' what elements to mix.

Great tips Nick! I live in a rental home but the landlord is a friend and he's fine with my decorating as I wish. I've used all your tips, right down to the hardware:) For other renters, I suggest peel and stick or removable wallpaper because it comes off as easy as it goes on, you and 1 other person can do it in a few hours, and you don't break any rental rules. I've transformed several rooms so beautifully...gives that designer touch:) We installed in it a bathroom that had this god-awful 80s foil paper...put it right over it! It can get pricey so do your homework to get the best deal.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've always liked the look of panel molding on walls. My style is Glam Contemporary and everything I pick goes well together. It drives my husband crazy. He takes weeks to make a decision and I make successful impulsive buys.
