I've made a few box calls, also. I drill some large holes in the bottom of the box. Seems to make it louder.

That call sounds good Im looking to make my own calls. I hunt a area were lots of people hunt and Id love to make a copper call because Im sure that no one around here has one. How thick does the copper need to be to be a effective call?

What’s the router called when you hollowed out the center that quick? Usually I see people hand carving it out on a lathe?

They are called "forstner" bits. Available online or any woodworking outlet.

You can find them online or at most plumbing supply houses or building supply stores. Even stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s should have them. They go by Forstner bits or most supply house counter employees or hardware store workers will know them by “ Boring Bits”. Obviously that’s boring as in Boring a hole not like my comment is long and boring. Lol.

I dont think theres sounds boards with alum or copper calls. At least you dont need one. Im a call maker (just a hobby right now) but I put a sound board on a alum call and it sounded like crap. I forget the setup. I know you can run glass over alum, I also think you can stack the two as well. That means no gap between the SB and calling surface. Just need to bring up the ped

+Hunter Cyrus Hey man its Steve. Slate calls are the most forgiving out of all the surfaces. Its the easiest to play, easiest to make. Copper and plain alum in my eyes are the hardest to make. Sound boards can very in all calls, they all will alter the sound. Glass is the most widely used. Theres single strength and double strength. Both work. You need to find the best space between the two surfaces to get the right pitch and roll over. Theres so many things that will change the sound. Its something you need to work with. But glass i would say is best for slate. It will give you a higher pitch, more crisp sound. You can use plexiglass, wood, slate, alum, anything for a SB. If you want to find me on facebook i can help you. My email is rusher75@yahoo.com. That should help you find me.
