Nice! I particularly like the way you turned the striker. I turned a mandrel for turning strikers that I have to replace often. I like your way better. I'm going to try it today. I inlayed a WV state quarter in one that I made for a friend and it makes for a nice touch.

How do you measure the depth of the call when your turning it? Don’t want to go all the way through. And what’s the spacing for the sound board slate? I’m brand new to this and want to do some.
@fishhuntbiker127
Жыл бұрын
The depth of the bottom is approximately 3/16". Its controlled by the depth of one of the holes that's drilled in the bottom. 7 of the holes can be as deep or all the way through. Leave one off them onle 3/16" deep. When hollowing out the call stop when you reach that hole. I recently made another video on making a turkey call which explains that process a little better. Check that one out. Sounding boards can be put in approximate 1/4" under the slate. You can experiment with that to get the sound you want. Help that helps.

So you don't' have a sound board on this call? I've seen where others will put glass, slate, etc on top of sound board? I guess that would be for a double sided call? Trying to learn

No, I didn't put a sound board on this one. That is an option though so the sound changes slightly. For my personal calls I dont use sound boards.

The length is approximately 1/4" inch. The finished call has a thickness less than 1/4" due finishing the bottom.

how thick of a piece of wood did you start with?
@fishhuntbiker127
4 жыл бұрын
I like to start with a piece around 1.1/4". That gives me plenty to work with. But I have started with less than 1" if I have a piece of wood I really want to use. The finished calls ends up a little over .3/4" to 7/8".

Is there a standard size for a turkey call? I’ve also heard of people using tile and corian instead of slate. Does this work as well? This is something new I want to try and turn on the lathe.

Most calls have a 3.5" friction plates. But you can get 3" and 2 3/4". They can be ordered in a variety of materials besides slate. You can get aluminum, copper, glass and several other types. Slate has some drawbacks when it gets wet but is generally the easiest to get tune to the sound you like. Hope this helps you.

I'm new to wood turning. What do you do to mount the blank to the lathe? What kind of chuck?
@fishhuntbiker127
5 жыл бұрын
The center hole in the blank is drilled with a 3/8" bit. I use a worm screw that's held in place by a nova chuck. The worm screw came with my chuck when I bought it. I also put a 1/4" plywood spacer between the blank and chuck to limit the depth the screw goes into the blank. Hope this helps. Beware, Wood turning is addictive.

You didn't see it because I didn't do it. I guess if I wanted them all to be exactly the same, I'd use a computerized machine to do it. I believe the users technique has more to do with the sound produced than the call It's self. But they sure are fun to make.
