    Another helpful tip: if you struggle creatively to develope your own mocs, rebrickable is a great source to purchase mocs of other designers. A lot of them are generally affordable (if they charge at all?!), and best thing is you don't even necessarily need to use a moc from there... sometimes just browsing what other designers have done is a great way to inspire you to come up with your own ideas, taking certain techniques and part usages and applying them to similar concepts. I've rarely built a moc on rebrickable that I haven't found a way to improve upon the original design.

    yeah, there's some great stuff and sometimes the creators are on youtube as well. it's how i found instructions to turn the executor into an imperial venator and later i swapped some colors to make it a republic venator, which is now sitting between two clone helmets

    Another excellent video Holly. I saw something in a video from Brick Clicker yesterday. Lego is planning a Star Wars micro fighter (Clone Wars era) that will come with the Captain Rex mini figure that comes with the UCS Venator. That will give people a less expensive way to get Captain Rex.

    I appreciate your honesty in admitting you're basically the blind leading the blind. I think its good to keep reminding folks that they are leveling up along with you rather than accidentally acting pretentious and suggesting you are providing advice as some GURU. Keep up the intro disclaimer as you go along. Someday you may well earn your own certified Lego Professional label along with those you are helping out. Kind of makes me wonder if typically "For Dummies" books were written by some random editor or actually authored by folks considered pros in that topic. Just be careful and keep up your transparency about where you are in your journey as you help us along with ours. To be fair, I'm basically at your level too. In awe of those who have time to create their own designs and their approach to lego piece purchasing is VASTLY different than those of us who just buy our pieces that come pre-packaged with instructions.

    Excellent beginner's guide to MOC building. I've won a MOC contest once before and have built some vehicle and small creature builds (and one large dragon) but still consider myself a rookie when it comes to MOCs. I want to get more into building structures and large scale MOCs but it's admittedly very daunting in terms of time, effort, planning, and money. That's why I feel that the Star Wars style dioramas present a very good mid-way point in terms of balancing all of those things without breaking the bank or becoming an enormous time and energy sink (where you're facing divorce proceedings from your significant other, lol).

    Some other helpfull tips: Buy used lego boxes off ebay, craigslist etc. you are gonna save so much money if the parts are really dirty just throw them in your washing machine at a low temp for like 30mins and they should be clean. This is also very environmentally helpfull. Another tip on how to get parts for cheap is to buy "off brand" bricks. Companies like bluebrixx mould king and some others. Youve gotta be really narrow if you think that only lego does lego sets. Lego is often extremly overpriced and also just greedy so get the competition some grounds to stand on to keep lego in line (yes this point essentially boils down to monopoly bad), but be careful not to buy from companies that essentially steal lego sets or mocs, only lego has certain licenses like starwars or essentially everything disney and bluebrixx for example has the Startrek license. Also their sets are often compatible with lego sets and they also offer the same colors, but you should look it up online to not run into any issues.

    My problem with trying to make MOCs is that I never want to disassemble my sets but that’s the only way to get parts.

  • @drzander3378
    @drzander33788 ай бұрын

    A good way to ease yourself into MOCing is to modify or ‘mod’ official LEGO sets. You can start with small, superficial alterations and, as your confidence grows, make more substantial changes. If as you go you study how LEGO’s designers achieve what they do, you’ll be well placed to start building from scratch.
