How To: Make your Own Dog Leash

Thanks for joining us for this video where we show you how we made a DIY dog leash for our dog, Bella. If you're looking to do something fun and creative during lockdown then this is the perfect project because you will have a beautiful custom collar for your dog!
We've also made another video showing you how to make a DOG COLLAR which can be found here:
• How To: Make your Own ...
◆Timecodes◆
Intro: 00:00
Things You'll Need: 00:26
Making The Leash: 00:56
Outro: 08:55
Things you'll need to make the dog leash:
► Dog Leash Rope
► Paracord Type I
► Swivel Eye Carabiner
► Cord End Caps
► Multitool
► Superglue
► Lighter
We bought all our materials from www.paracord.eu/ (not sponsored) but you can find paracord easily on eBay and most outdoors stores. There are many different types of paracord out there so it's important you search for Type I because it's much smaller than the others.

I've learned that you should never, ever just glue the ends, but make sure to sew them together. A good stitching is what holds it together and in the end keeps you and your dog safe. The rigging around the stitched - here glued - part is not counting towards safety and security of the leash; it's a decorative element. Other than that, I love the video and learned a new technique for thinning the ends of the ropes so that the end caps fit. Will definitely give that a try, thank you!

Hi Shileah and thank you for taking the time to comment and for making a very good point. I think for a bigger dog you would definitely want to stitch the ends together to prevent them from coming apart. It’s an easy step to add and it will definitely make you feel like it’s more secure. We’ve been using our lead since we’ve made it without any issues and I’ve tried to test it as much as possible so the good news is that it’s not as weak as it might appear. Having said that we have a small cocker spaniel so if I had a bigger dog perhaps I would feel that I would need to add a stitch for extra safety.

Hi Guilherme, The swivel eye karabiner was bought from Paracord.eu and is this: Swivel Eye Carabiner 'Light Gold' 65 mm What we’ve actually done is bought a cheap plastic green karabiner from AliExpress and attached that to the handle part of the lead so I wrap the leash around my back and the clip the karabiner and the swivel eye together. Yes, we did a collar too! There’s a video on our channel about a collar that was made with paracord. It’s smaller cord than the lead but they look really good together.

That's a great question Maria. I don't think I can confidently say yes to it but ours seems just as strong as it was on the first day. We do have a small Cocker Spaniel though (13kg) so much smaller than your dog. What you could do is use a needle and some strong thread to stitch the ends together after gluing them and before you use the little cord to wrap around them. That way the ends will be held in place by three things, the glue, the stitching and the cord. Hope this helps a little bit! 😀

I would say that about 1m length will be enough. You’re really just tying it around the dog leash rope to secure it. You could do more to be on the safe side and make sure you have a stronger grip so 2 meter should be enough leaving you 1 meter for each end.

Romy I think I can picture what you mean but I’m not sure how you can achieve that effect. The dog leash rope came as one piece and it sounds like what you want to do you might need to make yourself. It might be worth looking at some Paracord channels that show different ways to tie them to achieve what you want hopefully.
