Best Dog Accessory? 25 Carabiner Life Hacks for Your Dog

Is a carabiner the most versatile dog accessory NOT sold in a pet store? Here are 25 life hacks for your dog! **** Download the FREE Simpawtico Basic Gear Buyer’s Guide here: bit.ly/2dqBljF
****RECOMMENDED CARABINERS****
Some of the links below are affiliate links. These won't cost you anything, but the commissions we may earn through them help offset the cost of more carabiners. Thanks for your support!
I like locking carabiners because they prevent the gate from coming open. Not only does an open gate mean things will slip out, but it also compromises the strength of the unit.

Hey you don’t need to know a million knots (and believe me there are TON out there to learn), but knowing about five or so is a tremendous life skill that you can use all of the time. I know I do!
The two used in this video are the Bowline, and the Figure Eight.

I use a carabiner to make a run for my dog when camping. Tie a rope between two trees and clip the dogs leash with a carabiner on to the line. The dog has a free run between the trees. The carabiner slides really well over nylon rope. Make sure the line is low enough for the dog to be able to lay down. Also, you can clip more than one dog th the line.

When it comes to safety let’s not forget that the strength of the locking mechanism is only as good as the strength of the line on which your dog is attached! In reality a husky could very easily chew through one of those lines on less than 2 minutes leaving your safety lock attached to the car long after the dog has bolted!

My puppy escaped from his crate for the first and last time - typical Pet Smart basic wire crate. After dealing with chewed up cork and GLASS, and a fully destroyed house, I promptly ran to the hardware store and picked up a carabiner to simply secure the latch so he can't paw it and flip it up and do it again. Wish I had thought of this sooner!

I just started doing this too, for one of our JRT! We've come home on 3 separate occasions to find her randomly out of her crate, and at first I questioned myself like "Did I only slide one latch...?" But 3 times? No coincidence. We really found it more rude that she didn't jailbreak her sister--c'mon, Sis! haha! I hope your pup is okay, chewed glass sounds extra scary!

I’d like to urge all my fellow dog lovers to please use a locking carabiner as a harness failsafe, shown here at 6:46. We have a Boston Terrier who looks very much like the one in this video. She’s a puppy mill mama and one of the first things we were told when we adopted her is that they are very hard to get back if they escape. We have been so diligent about never opening our back door unless she’s secured but we almost lost her outside when she backed out of her harness. It happened so fast and we were extremely blessed that it happened in the field behind our house and not out front on the sidewalk. My husband caught her but I never want to go through that again. Now we never take her outside, even for a minute, without the carabiner.

It was educational for me and I am starting a hunt today for locking carabiners. I see your point. I will also be buying 2 extras and tucking them into the glove compartment of my car---another terrific suggestion.

You guys do know, legally your service dogs can be off leash (as long as they're trained) as required? This is true for the states at least. But legally according to ADA law SD's are not required to wear a vest or have a leash on if your disability makes that impossible. ADA paragraph, copy and pasted from the ADA website: "Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls."

I use the carabiner to link the leash back around when doing the .... Harness trick with a standard leash. Leash around the neck, pull leash along the back, then wrap around the belly, and loop over the line that goes down the back (2x), then carabiner the grip-loop to the dog's collar. So now you have a grip-able harness along the dog's back, without having to take the leash off.

I work in a kennel and every kennel gate is clipped with a carabiner so even when we unlock gates in the morning dogs can't open them. Most don't even know how but I swear some of these dogs are so smart! A lot of these hacks also work with a coupler, when I take a dog out to hands free training I clip them to a coupler and then my belt, not only is it a great hands free option, but if I need to tie them to something the loop in the middle makes it really fast and easy. I also use carabiners to clip large water buckets to the inside of fences slightly above the ground so dogs can't spill them.

Since you are a climber, you'll understand what I'm talking about. In order to give my lab some room in the back of our Subaru Outback, with the back seats down,, I use a locking carabiner hooked to a D ring in the back of the car, and attach a climbing runner (24" tubular webbing) to her harness. Keeps her safe and doesn't allow her to climb into the front seat. Thanks for your excellent insight.

I've gone hiking at the beach during low tide, and on the way back high tide had taken effect! The only rout was down a 10ft cliff. No problem for me, my dog however couldn't. I slung the leash under my dog and lowered her like an attack pooch on a helicopter. The key was my carabiners and extra cordage in my pack. Safe and sound, and had a blast doing it!

Some good ideas here. Only issues I had was some of the things shown being used to tether a dog to would not be strong enough to hold up to a dog who pulls or jerks against the tether. If you're going to talk about the strength of the carabiner that's great but if the dog is tied to something that's just going to break it doesn't matter how strong the leash is.

  • @SimpawticoDogTraining

    @SimpawticoDogTraining

    7 жыл бұрын

Well of course. The idea behind having a strong carabiner is that it's a multitasker available for dozens of situations rather than just a few. As always, match the tether, the activity, and the hardware to yourself and your dog. If you have a strong dog that jerks on a tether, be mindful of what that anchor is.

You need to use a locking climbing carabiner for a dog like a fish needs a bicycle. Don’t get me wrong, you need something strong enough for the purpose. I bought some ~$1.50 beeners for use with my grooming hammock. But they’re stainless steel and rated above my dogs weight, and the weight is supported by two rope/pulleys. My favorite use? Attaching my leash to chain link fencing outside the DIY/Home Center and grocery store while I go inside for for 10 mins or so. Or, as you showed, tying him off to a tree on a walk. Again, I would not use the carabiner I use for that purpose with a hyper Bull Mastiff, but for my chill Golden? It was never a problem for his 11 year life span.

I got one of my rescues as an adult who was abandoned near the Everglades so she is willing to just run/swim and not come back. So I use them to attach her to a ski rope so we can romp in the shore of the ocean/gulf (this is only done from shore) and she can freely go out with my other dog under my supervision of course. And yes, I am always on watch in case she gets tangled. This has allowed her to get in the water and get some swimming exercise while having fun.

I love them, I often take them from my dh climibing stash, The open gates from the hardware are good when you are training a service dog on waist belts to connect various leashes to their harness. I use a double so I can quickly shorten or lengthen them as needed. FYI never carabiner a jumpy dog inside a car they will wrap themselves to a point of harm, for our wild puppies we used car dividers designed for that in a small area like a bakity-back of a car, not a trunk-lol, we then stash pillows if needed to keep it more cushioned. We will carabiner if we are seated with the dog to prevent such issues of spinning especially young ones. I love all of your leash tips, they are great. Can you go over the various vehicles and the best ways to transport dogs safely? Also carabiner the crate in the car from shifting when you do that.Good stuff.

I am a carabiner hoarder and use it for my service dog in training, as do most service dog handlers. I use it to connect his collapsible bowel to his vest, to make a hands free crossways leash if I am without mine. I use it for connecting my pull strap to his vest due to his current vest missing the side d rings for a pull strap so I use small carabiners that cannot go over the rubber handle with keeps it from slipping and keeps it wide as it should be so it is easy to grab. I use it for all of his gear. I have one on my keys to connect it to my bag, his treat bag, or to his gear (vest, mobility harness, collar if needed, etc) if needed. I use carabiners for absolutely everything. Connect his prong to his normal collar for safety. Just everything. Carabiners are a staple when you have a service dog for sure!

I use a quickdraw as a car restraint for my little guy. God forbid if we ever get into an accident, I want to be certain his restraint is going to hold. Quickdraws are designed to catch and hold firm even when a 200 lb. lead climber has fallen from the wall. Most quickdraws don't have locking biners, but you can use attach two locking biners to a dogbone sling and then--perfection--room to move, but always safety in an emergency. I'm certain his harness (while very sturdy) would give out long before the quickdraw. Love those carabiners. Great advice!

I used mine to create a half-leash for my Guide Dog in Training. When we're outside and working on getting her to stay closer of her accord, or when her jacket is off, she gets the full lead, but when we're in traffic or in a store I clip the carabiner to the catch and I know with certainty how close she is Edit: also going to be buying the correct kind from now on - I've been using flimsy ones which explain why they've been so bad to handle (and why my keys keep coming apart)

I'm using a carabiner to make a double leash for my puppy's harness, so it becomes a dual walker which one leash attached on her collar and another leash attached on the middle of her harness. Its prevent my puppy from pulling and more safety for her body when she pulls. She's still 6 months old and she needs more walk training to not pull when there's a sudden distraction outside 🥲

I envy the price you say you find those at. I mean, even I would pick up a few at those prices (converted to euro's), but here they are closer to 30-50€ if you want a lockable one that's used for climbing and bouldering. Tbh, I've just picked hardware store lockable ones to use at weightpulling and stuff (the 16kg dog can pull a 260kg+ worth of weight if they absolutely want to, with the appropriate harness and all). But I'm super iffy if I'd want to put them as a part of a leash when my dog is very sensitive to weight differences on her gear otherwise. Plus very few grip-leashes (nylon with rubber strands weaved in between) come with these as an option so eh... These are just some thoughts that came to mind while watching. Good ideas though on the video..

What an excellent video. Concise, to the point, informative and so well produced. The carabiner is such a smart design with tons of uses. I hope I can come up with some alternative uses but i think you and others have most covered. Thanks.

I need to upgrade my leashes clip. I bought a "strong dual handle leash" from Amazon. Great reviews, and the leash definitely seems strong. More than enough for my 67lb 3yr old pitbull. But the actual clip.... I don't trust. It seems "dainty" to say the least. I'm looking for a substitute so I can cut off the dainty and upgrade to bulletproof. Now I understand how important the locking system is

I use the carabiner to attach leash to my belt which means in an emergency ie a fall I can use both hands to break my fall and my dog is always attached to me. I use black diamond climbing rated carabiners. I can always use a normal lead as a runners lead also. Just make sure if you do this it's a sturdy belt with a strong buckle if you have a big strong dog. I have a small dog so I can even use belt loops if they are strong.

I like your video and have subscribed! I have walked literally hundreds of dogs over thousands of miles at my local Humane Society over the past four years. I found that a rope style slip lead is best for this type of environment. I also found that if a dog is a puller then you can almost always stop the pulling instantly by simply attaching a carabiner to the eye of the slip lead next to the slip ring and simply looping the lead under the dog and then attaching it to the carabiner. You should probably have at least a 6" long slip lead for this. I then slide a homemade stop up to the carabiner so that the loop doesn't get sloppy. Most dogs respond well with the lead looped around the chest. Some dogs still want to pull so sliding the loop back behind the ribcage almost always stops those dogs from pulling. Neither method hurts the dog and is so much better than having your dog injure his throat pulling against a collar, etc. A non-locking carabiner works very well for this and is fast and easy to use. I have never had one disengage and even if it did somehow the slip lead loop is still there around the dogs neck. My favorite is used for rock climbing and is less than $6: smile.amazon.com/Fusion-Contigua-Military-Tactical-Carabiner/dp/B01M0AYDYT/ref=pd_sbs_468_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0VY3R853VZKJ1MW3B1MH I can also use the same lead as a standard slip lead of course if the dog doesn't pull and the dog doesn't need a collar for either method. Hope this is useful info for someone.

i used climbing carabiner for the improvised rope leash (seen at 7:00) for a really long time. But over time my leash has evolved, or devolved so to speak, into a simple climbing rope (dynamic rope) where i attach the dogs i use a simple bowline knot. It never tightens, making it safe and reliable for your puppy. if you do want an improvised slip leash for training the knot can be changed to fit your needs. I have two dogs so i use a long rope with a dog tied at each end. Another rope tied in the middle using a clove hitch for easy handling/ hands off walking. This also lets you tie your dog to a tree or a post with ease. my dogs also dont wear collars so they have nothing to clip the carabiner to :p

Hi Luca! The best thing you can do to address the trash eating is to train Leave It. Some trainers call it "Off." Same thing. Here's a video at DogStar Daily on how to do it: www.dogstardaily.com/videos/take-it After you learn this, it's a simple thing to transfer it to doing it in motion on walks.

"Leading the walk" is a loaded term. Depends. When you're out for a walk, it's your dog's walk too. As long as they're not acting rude, doing unsafe or annoying things, and generally doing what you ask, it's fine to give them some decision making. The caveat to that is that they MUST heed your requests. If they don't, then they naturally aren't ready for more freedom, just like a child. If you're asking about whether it's bad that your dog may be walking in front of you...no problem. As long as they're paying attention and minding you, and it's safe, who cares where they're positioned? The idea that the dog will think they're in charge is outdated. It's rubbish. We know better now. Just enjoy your walk with your friend.

When you lead climb, you're not supposed to back clip, because if you fall you can get the rope to unclip itself like you said. Most people don't put locking carabiners on draws because it would make the climb A LOT more draining.

How about configuring a leash to be a no-pull leash, where it will cinch under the tummy when the dog pulls? Attach the leash at the collar and the carabeener at mid back with lead going around the tummy and back up through the carabeener to you. It's an idea, I haven't personally done this yet.

You can technically do that without a carabiner, just with a kind of hitch with the leash. But a carabiner might make it easier to do in a pinch and probably smoother response.
