How To Make Walkboards For Scaffolding

How I made walkboards for the scaffolding I purchased. The walkboards are made from a sheet of 1/2'' plywood, 4 - 8' 2x4's, 2 - 10' 2x4's, 3'' and 2'' #9 screws.

This video could have been about me. I too have been searching Craigslist for used scaffolding for several weeks with no luck. Gonna head out in a few minutes to buy 2 sections of scaffolding from a supply house in town. I was looking for the best way to cut the notches in my walkboards and will use your method. Thanks!

Glad I found this video. I built a set of these in a little over two hours this evening. I have borrowed scaffolding from a friend but he only had one walkboard and I need at least two. I was a bit dubious about the strength because I'm just over 300 lbs. but these are plenty sturdy for me and my equipment.

Good job. It appears to be adequately sturdy for general home user. One small issue, though. I noticed there's no blocking on the underside to stop the plank deck from lateral movement. Stop blocks help to stop planks from being pushed off the scaffold from one end; a guaranteed necessity and one you'll always remember to include if you've ever used a wooden plank which has slipped off the cross-member, falling into the middle. A length of 2x2 under each end would suffice.

Not sure what you are saying. He notched each end so it won't slide lengthwise.

Probably have to add these to keep a home made fall arrest from moving too. Between the pins at the top of the section.

You have to use a metal tech floor plate as a wall anchor receiver; it's probably cheaper to make wall attachments too.

I think that's what I'm going to do too. With the 3 2x6s as a fall arrest, I'm going to nail or screw them together then nail or screw on the roof anchor dead center between the notches, then nail or screw another 7' 2x6 on top. Then I can use it as a fall arrest and a block hoist with a $20 ton rope hoist.

Does anyone know how he cut the round hole in the 2x4s? What type of saw produces a nice round cut like that?

  • @bayoubiker7834

Use a hole saw (about the same size as the cross brace). Cut a hole out of a 1 x 4. Place the 1 x 4 over the walk board, but off set it so that you can see daylight through 50% of the hole. This board will keep your hole saw from walking around while you are cutting a "half hole". Once the "half hole" is started, then you are golden! This is how I use a hole saw to "correct" a hole, enlarge a hole, or make a half hole. FYI...

@@mski349 yes it is - Jonathan West, a hole saw is normally used to install door knob hardware, as well as cut holes for plumbing pipes. I just used a jigsaw and make a careful circular cut.

This is great for one section. The problem will be when you try to run sections together, they won't overlap. You would need to separate staging interdependently.

Good video. Make 3. Keep two on work floor and one above below in the open space of the ladder section. I wonder if this can be done for the fall arrest, cut notches like this and either nail the roof anchor in between 3 two by fours or just nail it to the top of three nailed together or just wrap the life line around it. Home depot wants $250 for the metal one, it goes on the top in the middle of a section. A section is cheaper than buy the safety rail section too. Also to take up the 1' space a 2x12x7 can be place in the middle to fill the gap and walked on with a 2x4 nailed to it so it don't move around. KnP B makes a good point. A CRT rope wheel can be lashed to the section or safety rail for $40 in stead of buying $160 section and $79 wheel for chimney blocks.
