THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I couldn't create subtitles in Adobe Premiere, thank you so much!!! And Aegisub is a simpler and more convenient program. Your channel is very informative!

I have been using this method for some time and it works out great. However, I found out that if you are hardcoding the subtitles, you don't have to add the second break. Instead, just add more line spacing in the hardcoding software you are using. I set line spacing in Avidemux to 10 and the box does not overlap. It looks better too, IMO, because the lines are not as far apart. The only setback I know about is that you cannot set subtitles in a custom position or they will glitch out.

Thank you. I needed this to hide subtitles of hard-subbed video and lay the translation on top of them.

On Linux, Aegisub displays the same overlap with shadow. At the end, I moved the subtitles to Kdenlive. No overlap there, and a single rectangle with the "opaque background". Similar to Aegisub, the rectangle sticks to the letters. And the outline has the same effect. However, the outline adds to the box, so you get the same overlapping issue 😞

What if you want to make the background a single rectangle for a two-line subtitle with different lengths?

It won't be exactly aligned with this method but you can cheat and use NBSP (non-breakable space) at the beginning and end of your sentence --> ALT + SPACE

When I change opacity it doesn't make the box transparent. it changes to a lighter shade, but the color of the box remains solid

It works but i dont know how to apply that change to some lines and not all of them. It changes all the lines of the file

yess, you must update/change the STYLE of your subtitles. Then apply the STYLE to all of your subtitle-rows :)

I have another cheat to avoid the double space (\N). I use the following parameters, ***Outline: 0.1 ***Scale Y%: 97%
