In this video I show you how to make graphene at home using a pencil and scotch tape! I show you a 1cmx1cm piece of real graphene and show you how much light it can absorb even though it is one atom thick.

It should be noted that diamond is significantly hard, which doesn’t equal durable. This means that if you distribute the diamond thinly (such as in the form of a sheet) it will be extremely brittle, and therefore less durable than something like steel, which is softer and will bend rather than break when under force.

Yeah its strong material... So is tungsten which is used for lightbulb filaments... A very small amount of a strong material is still weak. It is simply stronger than the same object made of other materials. A lot of graphene will however be very strong. Btw diamond is actually pretty weak. It is hard, not strong. It can be easily crushed or shattered from strong impacts but due to its hardness makes great drills or other friction based tools that wear things down. Graphene is a different material with different uses. primarily electrical uses i would think due to its low electrical resistance.

@@oceanbytez847 you see Graphene as a single atom thick sheet is very strong I quote " it is so strong that it can withstand an elephant standing on a pencil " end quote a scientist ( i dont remember his name, I am very forgetful when it comes to names ). Graphene is pretty strong as well, but not hard as in case of dimond as you have said, it has multiple implication out side the electricals industry due do is strength it can be used elsewhere also. When you stack up Graphene it just becomes graphite and loses its abilities, so if in your endavour to make it stronger you are stacking more Graphene sheets and doing just the opposite. Yours sincerely

I hate how people keep talking about how strong it is without actually showing how strong it is. Yeah what can you do about it? Slam a hammer and it won't break? I've actually touched a graphene from my laboratory and it is very brittle, every graphene sample we had are taken with care because it is very brittle. Transfering a small area of graphene from 1 place to another is very challenging and some of them breaks just because some water are on it. So yeah, I don't get it why most people call it "strongest material in the world".

Did you know, diamonds, although they ARE the hardest mineral on earth, they’re NOT the *strongest* mineral on earth? In fact diamonds are actually one of the weakest minerals on earth!! It’s because they’re so hard!!! Let me explain: Glass is a pretty hard substance, harder than plastic, and sure it would feel pretty painful if someone hit you with a glass bottle where is a plastic bottle wouldn’t hurt as much. That’s hardness. However if you were to throw the two bottles at the wall the glass bottle would shatter instantly and the plastic bottle would survive just fine! That is strength!

As you said, graphite is multiple layers of graphene, however these layers are not connected as strongly as the carbon atoms in each particular layer (which is what gives graphene its great strength), so they are able to "slide" against one another, making it much easier to break a piece of graphite than just one layer of strongly bound carbon atoms
