How to make the GRETA GARBO! A refreshing classic (2 ways)

go.babbel.com/t?bsc=usa-influ...
Today we’re making the Greta Garbo two ways! The first recipe is the most commonly accepted, and the second is a lesser known cocktail. Both drinks, however, are named after the famous film star from a century ago. Greta Garbo was named one of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute. Seems appropriate there'd at least one cocktail named in her honor. Cheers!

I like your channel and don't mind sitting through an ad, but I wish that the ads were relevant to the content. I watch your channel because I like cocktails and I've bought from Viski because it's related to my interests. I could care less about Babel and will probably never buy from them, so it's kind of wasted advertising.

Reasons Anders is awesome: 1) improves the recipe and 2) gives us two versions. Who wants to waste valuable cocktail time drinking something that isn’t good? When Anders says it’s good, you know it’s good.

Have to agree with you on that first version re the absinthe. I find Luxardo maraschino to be super bossy and it definitely needs reining in sometimes. I look forward to trying both versions - good to know Swedish punsch may be home-made as there is none in the several Canadian provinces I have been to recently. Unrelated hint: in Quebec they seem to be obsessed with Yellow Chartreuse, but not so much with Green Chartreuse, so anyone in Ontario or Maine etc., wanting the green should visit Quebec!

At the time of Greta, no Swedish cocktail would exclude punsch. I tend to agree with that still today, but am still fighting with getting this one not just balanced but also subjectively interesting. Punsch can be wildly different though, which makes figuring out that part alone a long process if you prefer not to buy every punsch you can find and then sit there with punsch for the whole town afterwards from all that did not quite do it...

ok, i'm familiar with lots of classic cocktails, but this one is new to me, and i cannot wrap my head around how this one has such different ingredients for each, and yet somehow bears the same name. how? how?? how did this happen? was there an Anders equivalent back in the day who tried the Embrey one and said, "meh, it's ok, but i'm gonna improve it" and that's where the 2nd one came from? switching from rum to gin is just wild to me. they are SO different!

Just a heads up with Punsch is that the flavouring and sweetness vary with a few commonalities. For example if you would have used Carlshamn (A Swedish Punsch made in Finland) it would not have needed any simple syrup as it is extremely sweet, Kronan is a bit less sweet and more complex and if you really want to have a really nuanced Punsch that isn't super expensive I would go with Facile

  • @joarswenning457

Pretty much bloody marys and mimosas versus kentucky mules and Jack and cokes. I need your recommendation for a large scale morning cocktail and a large scale afternoon cocktail. Ideally I can premix the day before and just add alcohol and then serve. We get 200-300 folks at our tailgate. Having a couple pre-mixed cocktails would be a huge help. IMHO the best Greta Garbo film is "Ninotchka" from 1939, one of the classiest Rom-Coms ever made, co-staring Melvyn Douglas. The movie theater posters announced in all-CAPS "GARBO LAUGHS!!!" At the bottom, it says, "Don't pronounce it---See it!". Great movie. Sounds like two great drinks!

Though Swedish punsch can differ vastly, as mentioned earlier, they are generally very sweet in themselves. So I kind of feels it a little weird to cut down on the punsch and substitute with simple syrup. But I guess you already had tried just cutting down on the lemon juice in order to make it less sour. The punsch might kill the gin if they're equal parts, though. (Disclaimer: I've never tried the Kronan Swedish Punsch. It's not that common in Sweden. The most common are probably Carlshamns Flaggpunsch, Cederlunds Caloric, and Grönstedts Punsch.)

I wonder if "The Doctor", given the swedish punsch is a reference to the well known (scandalous) book by Hjalmar Söderberg, called "Doktor Glas" it is, after all contemporary with Garbo in some way, and both Garbo and Doktor Glas have made the journey from popular stars, to high cultural reverence. Just a thought. Thank you as always for the video Anders and Oz!
