Fun thanks. I've wanted to raise some for my terrariums for long time. I adore ur terrace garden! So simple, elegant & natural.
Thank you. Many people make guides on how to split cultures that are already mature. Not many people talk about how to start their own cultures. I cant easily get springtail cultures where I live. Going to give this a try 👌 I had resulted to using a pippette and sucking up indiviudal springtails, at night 😅

Interesting you only got springtails. Seems to be a highly selective give trap 😊 I haven’t tried it, but In my garden I think I’ll end up with all kinds of insects in the trap except springtails 😁

I take a old flower pot and fill it with soil charcoal and decaying plant matter then wait about a month, fill it up with water and watch hundreds of springtails float on top of the water

Can you keep them in the trap and breed them after you catch them? Or do you need to make a new container? Also do you need to put a lid on it so they don’t escape and just open the lid every so often?
I'll try it!!

I just caught a pseudoscorpion in my house. It's too cold out to put him outside, since he hasn't had a chance to make a home out there yet, so I figured I would keep him inside for now. Trying to catch these guys from my houseplant soil as food for my pseudoscorpion was looking to be a hassle. I will have to give this a try.
Thank...I so this in 2024.....I have them in my bonsai humidity tray
Hi, thanks for the video. Since you are having experience with these and i am trying to identify something that is invading my terrace decking (usually days after after a rain) do these jump?
@bradx_

Yes, these springtails are jumping
@courtneycallen
Жыл бұрын
They jump and they are known to invade houses; specifically kitchens and bathrooms since the spring tails are attracted to the drains. I discovered a leak in my upstairs bathroom after seeing little jumpy things. They were small and fast and when I told my husband about them he swore he didn’t see anything when he went to check. I felt like a crazy person for about a week because my husband behaved as if the thought of little jumping bugs in the bathroom drain was so absurd that it couldn’t possibly be true. Thank goodness for Google; I was able to prove that bugs that jump and come out of the drain, was not some unfathomable thing.

Haha. At a glance, some people really cant see them because they are so small unless you point them out or see with a magnifyer that they exist in that environment. A determined individual will always notice them. Just like fairies.

@@okami3186 if you lay down a flash-light horizontal to the floor, this actually creates magnified shadow of the insects and they are easier to spot. This is how I usually clean dust at home and how I noticed them. :D
Do you milk them, or skin them for their luxurious fur? Though very tough, when cooked low and slow the meat is quite flavorful.

I live in a dessert but I managed to catch some because my aunt and uncle dump the water from there sink and shower in the backyard every day so it's always moist
Do you have a Cryptocoryne garden?!!!
Curious, where did you get the figure? I'm a fan of history and surprised to see that ornament.

Why do you need gloves to handle charcoal? I love everything about this, it's just I'm worried I'm missing something about charcoal.

Seems you could of just overturned a rock and pick off more springtails by hand in an instant than the amount you got after a week or so in those traps. Just sayin.

I don't have yeast what to do
@bradx_

Actually the yeast is optional, the function of the yeast is to speed up the process of growing mold on the rice, so it's okay if you don't use yeast, but maybe the mushroom growth period could be longer🙌🏻
