How To Make Simple Cabinet Doors
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
How to make Shaker Style Simple Cabinet Doors. I find this method of making shaker style cabinet doors with with floating or loose tenons a lot easier and simple than the traditional method. Here I will be using a router to make the grooves however it can be done on a table saw as well. This project was for a client that wanted four simple shaker style simple cabinet doors, that they were going to paint and install themselves.
I first saw this method on Peter Millard's channel, link below.

I made a bunch of doors using half lap joints (difficult), then switched halfway thru the project to butt joints with pocket screws (ugly). But this method is brilliant! You basically have butt joints that are reinforced by the floating tenon. I can’t wait to try this out myself! 👍😂

Good video. Are the s4s boards straight and flat enough that don't need to be jointed and planned?
@LonghornWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. So I bought the boards at Home Depot where they had 24 inch s4s poplar boards. The short boards are usually flat and straight but I selected the best ones. I did joint them on the table saw, even though they were straight.
Hi. Great video. Thanks for creating it. Quick question. I noticed the tenons extruded a bit on the end. How did you make them flush after gluing? Thanks.
@LonghornWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
I ran the them through the table saw and then sanded them flush. If you measure them accurately and just make them just a little longer then just hand sand them flush

@@davidsotropa no problem, forgot to say you came also use a circular saw with a straight edge to cut most of the access off the tenons.
did you make the small wood inserts to put into the top of the dado groove?
@LonghornWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
Yes they were made from the cutoffs, so it was the same wood. Thanks for visiting and the comment.
I'm working on my first ever shaker cabinet doors and have been struggling with built-in tenons. I've tried using a DIY tenoning jig with dado stack on the table saw, and built a router table to try a tenoning router bit. The common factor that's making it all so difficult is the inconsistencies in thickness of off-the-shelf trim, and getting clean crosscut tenon cuts. Some joints end up too loose, some too tight. Also, too much fraying and blowout. Maybe that's common with poplar? Or that I'm not using top-of-the-line cutting tools. But too much wasted wood and time. Anyway, as I don't have a thickness planer I'm giving up on built-in tenons for loose ones. I can get a really clean mortise with the dado stack and if I mark tops of all the boards as I cut them the thickness inconsistencies won't matter. Thank you. This video is just what I needed! Subscribed.

For me loose tenons really is the easy way to build the doors, the measuring alone will save you headaches. Thanks for the comment and visiting the channel, appreciate it.

What's the biggest size door you can do with this method ?
@LonghornWorkshop
Жыл бұрын
I don’t believe you should have any issues with normal size kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I think once you go long / tall on a door you need to think more about the design, meaning having a middle rail. I am think long as in 6’ tall door you probable want a rail at 3’

Pushstick! If you are going to make an instructional video using power tools you owe it to your viewers to do so safely. So I'll do it: Viewers- don't run your fingers as close to the sawblade as shown in this video. Use a scrap piece of wood to push the piece of wood through the sawblade! One moment of inattention could spell disaster for your fingers if you proceed to cut wood as shown in this video.
