It is sooo validating to see production techniques I've developed over many years being shared as tips on this awesome channel. I can only think of a couple of other music production YT content creators at this level.

I was thinking the same thing! I've just been messing around in FL in my free time, but it's been 9 years now already and I've started to develop techniques. One of them is to always try to make the most out of every element I have through effects changing over time. Good to hear that I'm on the right track with that! :D

I'm so happy i learned that less is more early in my music journey. This is great advice, the human brain is always wondering what is missing while the reality is what can you remove. This kind of editing skill will do so much for your production.

The way I look at it, I try to "humanize" as much as possible. I'm a classical musician, but I also produce EDM. In order to keep each element interesting, I like to imagine that they're real humans playing instruments. What would they do to increase tension, expression, resolution? All the things I think about when I'm playing in the hall, I try to incorporate into my computerized music. Also, keeping things out of the way when they're not important. If you have a melody line and several tracks putting out harmonic content, they need to contrast (i.e. complex melody, simple harmony; simple melody, complex harmony). Otherwise you end up with a mess of sound.

My problem is that I can't seem to find sounds that sound good, I downloaded like 40k serum presets (the only synthesizer I own) and 99% just sound awful and I have no clue what to do with them.

Hey there! Try selecting a preset at random / has some resemblance to the sound you kind of want and then try some creative EQ, adding reverb, tremelo / vibrato - basically throw the rule book out and absolutly mutilate, you will be very surprised at what can happen and be created. Don’t stress about how the settings look in your plugins either - if it sounds good, it’s good, listen to yourself and what the “loudest” idea is that needs to come out and chase that. You can do it!
