I am so relieved you use the proper PPE when using resin. There are horror stories out there from people having reactions that range anywhere from rashes to serious respiratory difficulties. Ventilation, nitrile gloves, and a respirator are a must.

I've used polyester resins the bad smelly stuff since 1979. At the beginning I was silly no mask etc. But back then no books. No video's. And professionals did not want to help you. So I soldiered on and taught myself and learned everything myself and more. Then professionals started to ask me questions and I got my revenge and gave them the same answers they did not give me. But it's different today. We do help each other to a certain degree. Back to mould making. Fill the area with some rice and pour it into a cup and waigh it that will tell you how much silicone you need to fill the mould. Once you make the piece you can fill the mould area with rice. Again that will let you know how much resin you need to fill the moulds. I'd like to add I had no health issues with resin. Now we know more about using it safely follow the rules. Stay safe

To buy them anywhere are expensive especially for beginners, so we are thinking to make our own molds instead of keep buying when we want to create something unique for putting in Gift box and in Christmas Sock for the grand kids. It may have been said, but a resin 3-d printer can create insanely detailed prints that would yield better moulds. They are of such resolution that the layer lines are invisible.

  • @MarkRobinson555

Really like your videos, they are very interesting and informative. Regarding the silicone mould material you use, how much will it stretch? I want to cast a small bowl/cup like structure, but the base of the cup is only about 8mm, through which I would have to remove the rest of the cup, once set. The cup is around 45mm diameter, would its removal through such a small hole rip the silicone so destroying the mould? How elastic is the silicone once set? Appreciate your thoughts on this please, thanks 😊

Once epoxy resin has fully cured correctly then it’s normally food safe, for example for the side/decoration of a chopping board, always best to check with the brand you use first though. I personally wouldn’t make plates and cups etc to use though presently

Thank you, hmmmm that was a bit of a bumma, not so sure really, if it wasn’t salvageable any other way I think I’d with mix some more with extra gardener, or try and remove what I’d already put on. I’d take it as a learning curve for sure and turn it from something it was supposed to be into something else maybe, it’s a tricky one and really frustrating when these things happen I know, best of luck

  • @RedRockingBird

I really think it should be ok, the silicone should stick to the silicone, just make sure you don’t touch it or get dust or grease in there in the meantime, I’d cover it over. The other thing you can do to bulk out the silicone is to chop up any other unused silicone molds you have into tiny pieces and mix this in with your fresh silicone and then pour it in, let me know how you get on, best of luck.
