How to Make Quick and Easy Ocean Waves from Foil
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This was supposed to be a quick diorama because I wanted to do a step by step on foil waves for the book I am writing. Instead it became a testbed for new techniques and products. The ClearFix glue is an excellent find and I have already used it again for the Treadwell diorama waterfall. The water on that is also finished but I need to add all the building bits and there are a couple of other tasks I need to do for the book first.
You can see more details, recipes and materials including links on my website.

Thanks Luke. I was really impressed how well the ClearFix worked.
Hi from Michigan, where Chris-Craft Boats are manufactured - well back in the day, no ocean in Michigan but we have the Great Lakes. Like the demo, well done • Cheers from the Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Tin foil! Who would of thought.. Always great to see other methods of modelling water aside from resin. As for the wake it's strange to see how a boat and its propeller causes some unexpected paterns to form. Super!
Really brilliant work! I also love the way you credit other u-tubers that I happen to also follow. It creates a really lovely sense of community!
I work as a graphic designer, and your creative and artistic skills are a great inspiration in my work. Thank you!
Very artistic great job 👍
ONCE AGAIN, KATHY MILLATT MAKES THE EXCELLENT DIORAMA, WHICH IS FANTASTIC! HIGHLY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seeing how you created the water was absolutely mind blowing. I realy love this diorama! Thank you for sharing with us these techniques!

This is great! Well done as always, Kathy. Thanks for another awesome video.
The word "stunning" is overused but it truly applies to this piece. The boat wake is solidly authentic and the total lack of markings on the boat makes me think of smugglers trying to outrun the Coast Guard. Dioramas should tell stories and that's the story I got from it. Nice to see you try new techniques and find the bugs... so we don't have to!
WOW! Stunning!
Fantastic work yet again! Thank you for sharing.
You never cease to impress!
Amazing result!
Super cool!
What a fascinating process! Thanks!
Great work. Very realistic. Thank you.
Such a neat approach for this one!
Beautiful! Absolutely brilliant work here. I love the results.

Just incredible work! The diorama looks very realistic and the methods were something I had not heard of before. Thanks for mentioning those KZread channels. I will look them up.
wow amazing work as always Kathy
I've just got round to watching this, Kathy. It's brilliant! I remember Mike at Terranscapes talking about thinning clear polymer with white spirit for his ocean waves, too. It really works well. Great video.

Thanks! I nicked the ClearFix off Luke and it really works although it’s a bit matt when dry although that’s easily fixed.
Great work! Congrats.

Brilliant Diorama Kathy , keep it up
Awesome work! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Very nice 👍!
that looks so Awesome i wuld love to give something like this a try nice job Kathy.
I also pilfered the water from scale-a-ton. Great job
This is great! I've been kitbashing a hovercraft for a while and, to be honest, resin water scares me and is way beyond me. This is definitely something I will try instead, looks fantastic. So glad I found this channel
Hi Kathy, As always I take my hat off , I bet it took quite awhile, Fantastic,( if you got any foil over I have a joint for the weekend ) All the Best Brian 🤗
Unlike Titanic it's unsinkable. Anyway, very well done! I'm impressed!
Looks authentic just like a photo of the real thing.
So cool. Definitely learned quite a lot from this. Great video as always Kathy! Keep up the amazing work!
good vid keep up the good vids
That water looks amazing. I really like the way that you have brought together a bunch of techniques from various sources; and your own spin on the snow effect is cool. Cue Jan Hammer's Miami Vice theme tune. :)
Kathy, fancy going on a boating holiday with me, LOL. A beautiful diorama and I wish I was there, in the sun, with the ocean spray in the air. Marvellous stuff that dreams are (home) made off, LOL.
Wow. Now I want to the same
Thanks for the replygoing to try your method for a Vietnam river dio. Thanks agin
Wow!
Heated floors?! Well lah de dah! I'm not jealous. I dont care..... The foil waves give an amazing realistic shape! Nice!
Hi Kathy, I am the 3D modeler of that boat. My jaw was open throughout your whole video. Amazing!! If you have a need for any future models for your projects, please reach out to me. Love your work. -Rene
Waves turned out very nice, but I hope one day you return to this and finish the boat details.
nice video
wow
Hi Kathy, another stunning diorama, and it's set my imagination running wild, I'm thinking in terms of the boat being pursued by a Navy helicopter and an inflatable boat full of marines, but that's just me, anyway, stay safe, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
Hi Kathy, it's me again I was thinking about what I said in the previous comment about the helicopter, as I remembered the effect of the rotor wash from a low flying helicopter on water, I'm not sure if it would be a headache or a challenge, anyway sorry for filling up your comment section with your comment section with my waffle, stay safe, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
all you need now is a Bruce XD *starts jaws theme*
I don’t airbrush hand paint only. Can I use acrilick paints for the river. Love it.

Oh! I'll need to track that one down. Will finish off (eventually) a model I'm just starting to perfection if I get it on a Martian Surface themed base (It's the Pegasus Hobbies 1/32 MLEV).
Well, apart from the 3D printing, I think every single technique was new to me there! Though even the "overbaking" the 3D print was new to me: didn't know that's what happened if you left things to cure too long. Foil for waves - why have I never seen that before in 50 years of modelling? I've used Uhu glue for waterfalls and waves in the distant past, but the shelves of B&Q seem to have lots more things worth playing with now!
Amazing!! so so talented. but...... who's driving the boat?!
@KathyMillatt
3 жыл бұрын
I suspect it will be Lara Croft but my figure looked too big.
Unlike Titanic it's unsinkable...anyway, very well done. I'm Imprressed!
Heh, yeah, I've forgotten prints in the cure box too... think everyone who does resin printing has at some point.
What's is that accent? I can't nail it. Very ASMR vibes.

Hello in the colors you paint from Tamiya you can paint them one after the other or you have to wait for them to dry, thanks,
@KathyMillatt
2 ай бұрын
I was airbrushing so one after the other is fine. They’re thin coats so probably dry anyway. If you’re brush painting, the coats are thicker and you can drag the layer underneath if they’re not dry enough. A hairdryer can speed that up.
Have our ever worked with air dry clay as a river base if so. How. Need advice. Thanks. Jim 😊

I haven’t but I did use it extensively on my Port Dinorwic ground work.
Wow Kathy that turned out amazingly well, looks real! I live in Michigan, very close to lake Michigan where Chris Craft had it's boatworks, kinda neat. One question, what is the name of the product in the cartridge you applied for parts of the water, as I can see using the same application on a project I'm working on. Thanks!
@KathyMillatt
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The cartridge is ClearFix by EverBuild.
Wow Kathy I haven't seen this technique before and it turned out great. Does the foil get hard with the topping? I'd hate to have it on the edge of my layout and smash it. I'm a clutz, lol. Really cool seen, Chris
@KathyMillatt

Chris, it stays flexible because I didn’t scrunch the foil underneath very tightly. I think a firmer first layer would lead to a more solid result.

Yes it’s tough but I wouldn’t bash it around a lot.
I saw somebody online re-clearing a resin print that was dark with a hot gun, took about ten minutes of waving the hot gun over it. Never tried it not sure if it works its just for your info.

Sorry what is “ white esprit” mixed with woodland scenic snow .??
@KathyMillatt
8 ай бұрын
The clearfix needs a solvent to thin it. White spirit seems to work best although now I might use odourless thinners to cut down on the smell.
doesnt the foil fold on itself ?
@KathyMillatt

You scrunch the first layers fairly tight so it’s fine.
A modern day Marie Celeste?
Can i use mod podge for puzzles for this diorama? And is paint able silicone a good substitute? Just trying to use the stuff I have. I need the brain power you folks have. Lol
@KathyMillatt
5 ай бұрын
You’ll have to experiment on paintable silicon as I’ve never heard of it I’m afraid. I do use mod Podge on this so it’s certainly usable if it dries glossy.
Turtle .
Looks really good, but not sure you can call a speedboat with no one driving it "ultra realistic".
