I agree with your point about realism and distance with one step sparring. I learned TKD when it was called Chung Do Kwan from a first generation Korean instructor in the Chicago area, Sung Muk Ko. I suppose with younger students who have a lot of time, doing some forms and OSS is all right. With adults, I minimize it in my teaching and concentrate on conditioning, technique, and application for real life situations with an emphasis on sparring. Thank you!

I'm glad you mentioned this! I've always been frustrated with other instructors teaching one step sparring at unrealistic distances because it's "safer". Worse, I've seen many of them create their own one-step sparring movements based on an opponent that attacks from far away and then just stands there with the punching hand outstretched. I think most TKD schools could really benefit from these more dynamic practice methods. Sadly, most students just want the curriculum spoon fed and don't want to do the necessary work...

Can one step sparring be practical? *Starts argument with a reference to movie choreography correlating to practical technique.*

Yes, can be practical for self defense. if takes you more than one technique to repel an aggression, it becomes a fight.

I hold black belt in TKD, but I found it hard to use TKD in real situatuon e.g when someone pointed a knife to my neck from my back or when I was about to kick someone and I'm in jeans and not in TKD gear. If Sabam could show things not in TKD gear but in jeans it surely be.more down to earth.

Change your mode of dress, or don't rely on kicks. Taekwondo has as many strikes as it does kicks, if you cannot kick, and cannot run, close the distance and strike, grapple, bite - whatever it takes to overcome your assailant. Taekwondo is essentially the Korean adaptation of Okinawan karate and in karate every strike can be a block and every block can be a strike. What's the difference between an outward or upward forearm block, and a forearm strike? The plane on which it travels. Change the plane and that forearm block becomes a strike to the neck or face. Twin knifehand block? Change the distance, it becomes a knifehand strike to the neck with the rear hand in guard position. Inward elbow strikes to the face, neck, or solar plexus. If you are not goot at striking, focus on building up your striking techniques and power. If you want to kick in jeans, findjeans designed to kick in. Chuck Norris used to have a line of jeans for that purpose. Look for a gusseted crotch, and no skinny jeans. Wear a size larger. Same goes for slacks, fashion should take a back seat to function. You may also want to look at cargo pants, specifically the mountaineering/tactical stuff from 5.11, or Proper brand BDU pants. They're designed to move in, have plenty of room to climb, kick, hike or run in. Not out of place anywhere that jeans are accepible in, except maybe a country-western bar. If some cowboy gives you shit for cargo pants, you can recreate the scene from Billy Jack anyway 😆 - but seriously, you can make a change - be it to your fashion style or fighting style to fit whatever situation you are in. And if you have to blow the crotch of your pants out to defend yourself, its better to walk home with your junk getting aired out, than to get a beating.

I'm not sure one-steps can be made practical. Who stands at a prescribed distance and throws one lunging straight punch in a street fight or sparring match? I enjoy doing them as part of the art, but I have no misconception that they will help me defend myself.

The biggest mistake in TMAs is not practicing keeping the non punching hand covering the face, but rather always at the hip. This builds a dangerous habit that is hard to retrain.

  • @nytrodralyg1860

the techniqe on itself is not a mistake, but rather the way how it is practised today, the Hand on the hip symbolises a grabbed arm. So you have build up contact to your opponents guard and then u pull him into your Punch. the technique is not supposed to be a Punch with a missing guard

  • @Docinaplane

@@nytrodralyg1860 With all due respect, doing hikite by always bringing the hand to the hip is a bad habit. I get the grab and pull, but it is a mistake to always pull to the waist because it builds a habit that will leave you open to hits in the face during a fight.

  • @nytrodralyg1860

again. if you Always Train this technique as a Punch without a protection of your face, then it will obviously be a bad Habit. But the Point is, this technique is not supposed to be practiced and applied like that in a real life Situation anyways. The Problem is just that most ppl misunderstand the application of the hikite. If you Train it in the correct and effecient way then youll not have to fear About dropping your guard to your waist when punching like a boxer, bc you know that the hikite Punch isnt supposed to be used like a Boxing technique
