I was also told to add salt so they won't be no mold
Have you tried using this mixture in molds? Would be curious if it would work.

I can't afford to go out and buy joint compound right now, can I use lightweight spackling or caulk in place of it?

Is there a gluten free version? ❤
DAS air dry clay doesn't ever crack for me, especially if you go ahead and gently paint it (slows the drying so no cracks,) and glue it to your project right after or before you paint it, so it won't really shrink either ...
