Having a “go getter” mentality is great. Take initiative, go the extra mile, show that you want to hustle. In the same breathe, it’s important to maintain healthy boundaries with your employer/customers and set proper expectations. Otherwise you will burn out.

This dude is absolutely right. I'm not an installer but I am a layout guy and i started a year ago not knowing a damn thing about hvac or metal work. I've gotten $5 dollars in raises in a year since I started by doing a lot of these things he mentioned. Working long hours. Showing up everyday. Always doing what I say I will and making sure it's done. And most importantly I think, coming home and watching videos and trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can about the trade. And I didn't have to bring up raises or anything. Boss man noticed and has consistently made it worth my while. I'm super thankful and am very honored to have the opportunity.

i started in this trade my senior year, my family is all paper pushers so i started as a tool bitch in residential. Now im 25 and 8 years down the road i just switched from residential to a new job working on stuff like 100 ton package units doing a lot of prevailing wage jobs in LA which is quite the transition for me. I wanna learn this big stuff for a while and then dabble into refrigeration a bit and hopefully by then my daughter will be in school and i can focus on starting my own gig.

I can't stress enough to people how critical that word of mouth is. Honest is key too! It can make or break you! It helps if you're active within the community. I've been in business 5 years just off of word of mouth. You can buy an image but you can't buy a reputation! A good reputation is life in this industry

Great video as always. I will say that this field is easy to burn out on as well so if you find that you are actually following many of these tips and dont see yourself progressing then don't be afraid to go get what you're worth but be prepared to back up what you believe of yourself and leave your ego at the door. We are all, only human after all. Much love all my HVAC goons!

Well said Zac! Some people just cap out and the company won't pay more. My boss is so tight with money that his ass squeaks when he walks. I look at it like this, we or us employees are investments, if we or us employees are profitable quit being so damn tight. Investments make you money not cost you money. Most of my training or knowledge comes from me doing my homework when I don't know something. I went and got my Master Hvac license 1.5 yrs ago and now thinking about getting my class B contractor license so I can do my own thing. You hiring? LoL! Some of us need bosses like you to become unstoppable or feed and push each other. Thanks for all your content Zac! 👍

Good advice indeed. As a Senior Project Manager, everything you said was exactly correct. I would also include Curiosity as a necessary or complimentary trait to "Drive", they kind of go together. I've never understood how some people are satisfied to be so ignorant and disconnected. The sum total of everything they know or care about can be exhausted in a 10 min. conversation. With the Internet and channels like yours there is virtually an infinite amount of information and educational content available for FREE.

I totally agree with the fact that knowledge in the hvacr trade is very important and relevant compared to experience. One technician could be doing several things wrong without being aware of it for years. Now, knowledge combined with experience. The results are going to be outstanding.

Reading manuals is something most people don’t do. People just don’t like to read and the manual is basically a cheat sheet right under your nose. Not all brands operate the same and manuals show sequence of operations. My boss gave me a raise before my review because I was standing out and kicking ass. So keep learning kicking ass! 👍🏽

200% correct 👍 And if you have problems teaching yourself which some people do there’s nothing wrong with that. Then research and teach yourself how to learn it’s actually an art form and there’s some secrets to it. Once you learn how to learn then you can teach yourself anything. Look at your boss and whatever you can see he does the best convince yourself you’re going to be better than him at that And when you’re learning and working under a senior technician learn from him what he is best at and what you hear others say he is really good at and pay attention to that subject if you’re fortunate enough to bounce around between different technicians in the same Company learn what every senior technician is best that they’re strong point and make it your job to learn those points from that individual senior technician. And learn not to pick up bad habits or sleazy salesman tactics to make a buck that bad reputation will catch up to you

It’s not always about how much you know to make your worth, a lot of times with these company’s it’s how much money do you make the company. What’s your service revenue. I was at a company where a new guy who had no experience came in and make the company 25k his first month in service revenue. He ended up making more than me. Guys were selling customers stuff they don’t need, selling an inducer that should have cost around $800 for $2700! Charging so much, lying about the warranty coverage to force the sell of a unit on a 7 year old system. That’s the sad thing about it. Because I try to learn as much as I can, and I can’t bring myself to sell stuff someone doesn’t need. Anyway, I’m no longer at that company and now at a service first company, no more selling BS. But just wanted to say, a lot of times it isn’t knowledge or experience that dictates pay. Just cold hard cash you make. No matter how you make it. Been watching your videos a long time now. Great job man!

Love the videos! Just got started in the trade a couple weeks ago and have been enjoying every minute. However idk if you had or anybody you know could share this expierience. But to me it seems schools both highschool middle and elementary are all making any trade almost be a punishment for not actually focusing enough on your schooling. And that you just aren’t that smart if you don’t go to college and it’s almost a stigma that has been developed from nothing.

I agree with knowledge over experience unless you haven't actually done what your knowledge can produce. If you have someone that's experience and done what you know you're left in the dust without experiencing the nuances of each task simply because you haven't done it. Now if you're a knowledgeable tech and learn and figure things out really quickly on the fly then those kind of people are gems and hard to find! They deserve the big bucks!

I'm actually surprised at your tips because yeah your right, wish there was a company like that around me. Instead the only company around me is one that the techs are great but the sales team ( in my opinion any one with a separate sales team is probably trying to take advantage of you from experience at least) are going to try & weasel as much money from you as they can. The first red flag was that they wanted to be around the furnace alone which is odd to say the least, But they seemed alright, right up until they attempted charge way more than it actually takes to replace a gas valve, with the purpose to attempt to force us into buying a new furnace with other things, Which of course backfires because people ain't that stupid at least i'm not & if they are willing to squeeze money from you when your freezing to death for a small part that takes 10 mins or so to do, than they are going to do it with anything bigger. & sure enough thats exactly what happened but to be honest because of the over pricing on the gas valve the likely hood I'd have them install a furnace or do any work at all is slim to none. So overpricing probably isn't good if you want sales, especially today in a world where anyone who wants to take the time can literally do it. Part of the (i'll call it a scam) they were running is they also didn't even see what type of furnace my house actually needed & not only gave a price that only a rich person could afford, but they also tried to downsize it & for the price they were charging they could of got a exact unit or bigger & still made loads of cash. The only other thing i think they probably made a mistake on is they wanted the money up front if they had payments i might have had them do it anyway despite the bad taste in my mouth & the feeling that they may have monkeyed with something because they were not happy because they tried to double charge us for the same diagnosis that was a different price than we were given to begin with. When a person can just buy a whole new one & do it all for a fraction of the cost that they were charging. If i'm gunna pay the price of a house they better be replacing every thing to do with all the whole setup wires included.

Did U Find & Fix the Water Leak so the New Motor does not Fail ??? im Hoping so. also One Thing i dont agree with is the Meter with the Rotating head, it Just seems like a Point of failure. Has Anybody seen this With the Rotating head meters ?

Another case of treating the symptom, not the problem. It's an 80% furnace so most likely the drain pan is compromised or the drain is clogged. Water is going to destroy the new motor that you just put in along with the control board.

Great advice , myself I am a nearly retired electrical contractor at 64 yrs old and can say I have seen a tremendous amount after working commercial, residential and industrial over fifty yrs what I am most concerned about now is a lot of the current generation coming up is into instant learning which I believe could create a substantial lack of tradesmen I hope I am wrong but I guess we will see

I’ve been in residential for a year now and my biggest issue is finding a company not pushing sales. Annoying UV lights and surge protectors, pushing new system on anything 10 years or older. Thinking of switching over to commercial/ industrial. Working on chillers and boilers would be preferred.

I have signed up in a community college for their HVAC program and I want to have my own HVAC business. I know the accounting and administration part, what I don't know is: commercial or residential and what makes more money?
