I think it speaks of your character that you are willing to share your knowledge with others so that they may make money doing the same thing. I have friends who have businesses and they won’t even talk about them because they are so afraid that you will try and do the same thing. I think that is being petty and small. Thank you for being so open and honest. It pays off in the end. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward to them. I think that is how you prosper because you share your knowledge and truly care about people.

That's funny. I've run into that same mentality so many times over the years... I'm a copywriter, so I deal with clients from a wide array of industries, and that is always something you see - people trying to safeguard their trade secrets. Like they've got KFC's seven herbs & spices or something!! But what people don't realize is that there are infinite slices of pie...
A good tip for those who haggle on price is to never say, "I'll give you $xx for that..." It is insulting to the seller. Instead, say something like, "Will you take $xx for that..."

When working with a dealer it is best to keep a rapport, or you can say, "What is the best price you can offer". If you are a repeat customer, be assured if the dealer is fair you will receive more than a 10% discount.
I saw a sign on a shop once "Buying old junk - selling antiques"

An antique by definition is an item which is 100 years old. Junk on the other hand is someone's junk and another person's treasure.
I hate old stuff, im not into antiques, I never even buy second hand, and here I’m binge watching an antiques selling channel. Lol but this guy is addictive
I think being a antique dealer is one the best jobs in the world, lots of exciting stuff to look at! Thanks for the videos.
“Can’t fall in love with the merchandise” I have issues in that department!😂 Informative video, thank you

Nine times out of ten collectors (do) become dealers as their collections are busting at the seam. Try just keeping a collection of something you will never part with and the rest is on the table for resale.
I’m a collector and therefor the issue of value is less relevant, but I sill choose carefully. The things I purchase generally have a story, my favorite type of story being what it is. Occasionally I restore items, if the restoration brings me enjoyment. An example of a restored item is my fully restored and rewired streetlight. There is zero value to me in an item such as this, if it cannot be appreciated in it’s full dramatic colours. My most basic rule is “buy it to enjoy it”.
Wow! Thanks for the shout-out. Loved putting together the best investments video and was surprised how much you can make on art and collectibles. Not only do you get the returns and potential to make extra cash but these things are great conversation starters! Great video, thanks for the tips.

If you live in or happen to visit Edmonton, you will find that Alex is as genuine in person as he is in the videos. I have visited literally hundreds of antique stores during my 59 years and he continues to have some of the most obscure and neat items.

Thanks for this video. I've dabbled in buying and selling for 50 years, then did Ebay far awhiles, but now have a shop with resale, collectibles, curios and antiques, and it's always nice to hear someone's opinions on the subject.
I don't ever comment on videos but I wanted to take the time to thank you for making this video. I've always considered myself an old soul and have recently thought of antiquing with the goal to own my own business. I found your video very informational and appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge. You've gained a new subscriber! :)
What a gift to have on your birthday! Happy birthday Creatot on the rise!!!! Happy to be introduced to your content!
Thanks for the advice. I inherited three estates in the last few years and two of them were hoarders. I now have most of it stuffed into my house so it looks like a hoarder lives here. I do online sales because I do not have the capital or the health to run my own store. I love watching you with yours though. Ebay and Etsy have been fine but, yes, they do suck up a lot of your time. KZread live sales are a lot easier but you still have all that packing and invoicing to do. I have learned so much from watching you over the years. Your channel has been a blessing and a lot of fun.
Thank you so much for this very informative video. It’s very helpful. The fact that you are willing to share this information with the world speaks volumes about your work ethic and your character. As hard as it is to believe sometimes, sharing your knowledge isn’t going to take a thing away from your business. As a matter of fact, I’m almost sure it is the reason for your success and will continue to benefit you throughout your lifetime.
Enjoyed this very much and would love to see more like this. Also from the past when you used to go to old scrap yards with old cars... they were fantastic!!
Hello from Winnipeg! and thank you so much for all your advice! I have been buying and selling antiques and vintage for only 3 years now, and it has always been a dream and passion of mine. Some of your points here really affirmed hunches I already had, and otherwise, so refreshing to hear someone talk honestly and learning about the business! You are correct, It is always a learning curve! LOL I'm just about to foray into the world of auctions, which I have always been intimidated by... your videos have been extremely helpful! Congratulations on your KZread channel, I just discovered it recently and am hooked. The Potter House has been giving me life this winter!!
I’m an amateur antique dealer and collector. I’m glad you were able to share your knowledge.

Happy Belated Birthday, Alex - Excellent advice - Thanks so much for sharing....
Thank you for educating me on the antique business. I wondered how anyone could make a living doing this, my convoluted way of thinking was that you were hoarders and got rid of very few things. It is nice to know that not everything ends up in the dump, I am guilty of liking new and shiny but I have lived 53 years in an old reconstructed house that is very comfortable.
You're generally honest and down-to-earth yeah I appreciate your videos when I'm in the great white North I would love to come in and stop and see you I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and continue on in the great videos that you put out and I hope someday that my stuff will go on KZread and you would enjoy it Merry Christmas
Congrats on 80k subs! You've gone up 30K subscribers in less than a week! that's amazing. Only way from here is up!
Excellent advise. I especially like the part about what's known as the "sunk cost fallacy." That's where you keep holding on to something because of an emotional attachment to it long after you should have let it go or sold it. That's quite possibly the single biggest reason people fail at this type of business.

I find that on picker's shows as well. A collector who wants to sell, will not do so, as he is in love with the stuff.

@@andytaylor1588 Yes and on shows like that you sometimes see great stuff or things like vintage cars just collecting dust and other stuff on top of it, it's hard to watch haha. Better sell it to someone who can clean it and/or fix it up and sell it to someone who can appreciate/use it better. But on the other hand I can understand why people get attached to stuff. It's always good to be aware of this, it happens to everyone.
I always enjoy your videos. It´s your attitude toward your work and family that is so appealing. Apparently a whole lot of people think so too! Everytime I watch a video I see that your subscriber numbers are up several thousand! Looking forward to many more.

Good stuff. Really enjoy your videos. Having found them so recently, I feel the adventure! Can’t wait to see #4 on the house. That house was waiting for the right person, no surprise it’s you.
You were born the year I graduated high school. What a great year. Happy birthday Alex.
Thanks for uploading this great video. It's nice to have sound practical advice from someone who is actually working in the trade. Let me wish you all the best with your business adventures and a Merry Christmas.
Birthday greetings from New Zealand. I am trying to convert my LARGE collections of the past 40+ years into $$$$'s. I love watching your videos to get ideas for selling and also ideas on what new trends are. I find it quite amazing how many things I have stored away and seeing your videos jogs the old memory bank to go and find them again to sell. Keep up the good work and have a great and happy Xmas with your family.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALEX!! ...and many more! Thank you so much for the lesson in owning/running a vintage/antique/'junk' shop :-D. I have oodles of stuff in my home that I need to pass along to others that would fill a little shop, AND, I would REALLY love to do that. Your tutorial in the business of running such a shop was very helpful and inspiring. However, it remains to be seen whether or not I take that initial step to make it happen. We'll see..... Thanks again and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your family.

Thank you! Excellent presentation and valuable tips buds. I have an antique, collectibles shop in my garage in Odessa Ontario.👊🇨🇦
I live in Vancouver, Washington and there are a lot of antique shops! I mainly buy the men's items (not grandma's antiques-lol) such as old cigar boxes and tobacco ephemera, old bank check books and receipt books, old rustic tool boxes, old pamphlets, medicine apothecary, old vintage coin wrappers, anything wood or metal that is embossed, etc. I just love the old typefont! Thanks for the good advice and great channel by the way!

I collect what I love and do not worry about what it’s worth. I surround myself with my antiques. I use them. My niece will get it all and I told her pick out what you want and sell everything else.
Thank you for a very informative and helpful video! But then your videos are always great!
fantastic content! thanks you for your insight on the business aspect of your store. i really enjoy your videos.

Happy late Birthday Alex! There was some sound advice here, it's my absolute dream to get involved in this business being a long time collector and lover of old and strange things. I know I will have a slight problem with the " don't fall in love with the items" tip LOL, being a collector is a blessing and a curse. I think you've done great accumulating your man- tiques and clearly there is a big market for them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, and Happy Holidays! ~ Natalie

What a great Video from such a fantastic antique shop. You have the best antique store I've seen. I've traded vintage cameras for 5 years and learnt from experience and looked for trends. If you watch eBay you have to check the SOLD listings NOT the prices that the items are listed for! The key is being careful not to pay too much and get stuck with items as they are dead money.Vintage cameras have trebled in price in 5 years.

Great advice. Love how you share. Happy New Year to you and your family.
I've always had the same interest! Love the history!!
Great video, I like how you say we and not I. Including the family is great. If I'm ever in the area I will shop at your family store. I like old coins, my Grandpa and Dad left me some coins and my son and I add to the collection. Cheers from Ontario. 🇨🇦 Keep the videos coming. Cheers!

Excellent video !!!! from a fellow shop owner in Staten Island New York called objects of Interest antiques
I love your outlook. A fair profit is worth having. After many years stationed in Germany I came back with three 1860 schranks/break fronts and many clocks and pre war pitcher and bowl sets. My most loved item is an old German blanket chest, painted with a date of 1648. It came out of a barn where it had spent most of its life as a grain bin. Not gorgeous, paint darkened and hard to see, bit I love it. I don’t expect much value from any of it, but it pleases me. I wish you were in Portland, Oregon, or someone like you. Word of mouth means a lot.
Wow!! Great video....excellent advice!!
Thanks for the advice, I do small sales myself but I’d love to have a store of my own. Been picking since I was 10. Mostly collect smalls and things I find cool. Also since I’m in ya I sell a lot of Coke merchandise
50% rule God Bless you here in Ontario one would be lucky to get 10% more often 5%. Happy Birthday!
I’m soon to be a antique seller from UK. Primarily sticking with what I know best with items.
Happy late bday hope it was a great day for you. Great video by the way.

Love your integrity and channel !
Good advice its it generaly business advice, but VERY good general advice, which of course still works in antique trade. Great video, 5*
#19:10 When I was working for my father-in-law at his electrical supply store, I would make small bedroom end table lamps from left over broken fixtures. They sold very well for $10 each.
I enjoy your video very knowledgeable and honest.
Hi from Ottawa, ON! Love your channel. It’s really interesting.
Knowledge is power, I started young. The hardest is to sell things you like to keep 😂😂😂 It's not all about money 🙂 Good luck 🍀
I have an idea for you: Presumably you have a sign telling buyers they are on camera. There must be interesting videos of some of your sales. If someone is beating you down on the price, offer them a discount if they'll sign a release. Then you can show the whole life of an item, from where you dug it out, to resto, to sale, like Salvage Hunters does...
Thanks Alex, very interesting video. You should of ironed the Calendar using brown paper with the iron an a low to middle heat it works great for getting the crumples and folds out of paper and thin card objects. Anyway loved the Channel. 👍
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your integrity!
Great video!Awesome advice!Thank you.
This video was great! It filled in some blanks for me and proved once again that you are an ethical businessman, not that more evidence was needed.
Thank you,very helpful ❤️🎄
Love the show. , great presentation.

I think the main reason you find a lot where you are and around the area is that things are not constantly being torn down, paved over and all that. Love Roadshow, mostly, but no matter the value, there are just some things that do not interest me in the slightest.
hapiest birthday!wish you the best 🎂🎈🎉🎁
This is the video I’ve been waiting for lol
You started collecting at the age of nine and I started at the age of 11, and purchased my first home in cash at the age of 21 with the money I made selling antiques. My motto is "if you like it then buy it" no guarantee everything you buy will sell so be prepared to live with the items which do not sell. Remember, keep in mind what others want to collect is (not) so much what you want to collect as taste vary. Rarity is key with antiques and condition is everything when reselling.
Love watching your video all the way from ireland
Nice video!! Thank you for sharing

Great video, thanks! I saw a mermaid behind you, the kind of stuff I collect (among other things, which means: a lot of different things 🙁). I like to go to antique shops and flea market with my wife here in Switzerland, and although I don’t have a business, sometimes I buy something to resell. It happened already that I bought something cool for a very good price and sold it 5 minutes later at the next antique shop. However, I am now at the stage where I really have to sell part of my collection because the space. I will perhaps do this online, I am not sure yet. Especially my collection of chess items is quite nice, with some very interesting things. I should sell at least 2/3 of the collection.
Thanks for the show alex..cowboy..
GREAT video! Thanks!
Are lunch boxes a good investment? I had a collection in the 70s and when I sold them I didn't get a lot for them.
THANKS for the VIDEOS
