How To Make Modern Gun Sound Effects For Film & Video Games Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Guns in Call Of Duty Vanguard sound absolutely incredible. In this video, I'm going to be breaking down everything I've learned over the years studying the impressive Sound Design of the Call Of Duty Series.
In my last video about Modern Gun Sound Design, I took a very basic look at how to get pro-level gun sounds. I want to break down every element of every layer that I use when designing COD-level gun sounds. We will be going over The difference between film guns and video game guns, Sampling Guns, Layering Weapons, Extra Sound Effects to include, Processing, Reverbs.
This video is all about pro-level gun sound effects, how to capture them, and how to create them.

    I've watched both parts of this mini-series and loved it. It would be really cool if you could make a third part centred around budget-friendly (like $10-$100) gun sound design for us happiest game designers and filmmakers. And recommend some cheap sound libraries and free plug ins, those libraries you recommended in the last video are 200+ dollars for a single gun some of them, totally impractical for most people. Also, you may want to take a look at the sound design of apex legends, that game has some MEGA satisfying gun sounds. It also makes the same gun sound different when it is changed in some way that is relevant to the enemy, for example, when you use hammer point rounds, which change a weapon damage profile depending on whether the target has amour or not, the gun makes a for Matelic sound and has different tracers. Or the sentinal, an electrically charge bolt action rifle, an be charged up and when it is it increases damage and makes much louder, as well as adding or lighting sound effect to the gunshot. It also takes a unique and less realistic approach to tails and occution. When a gun is fired in doors, usually the sound is made dryer and duller, rather than have a whole separate sound that was recorded indoors. It's these small things in apexes sound design that make me love it so much, and maybe you too. You should check it out, that nearly even scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

    1) Huge fan of Apex Legends guns They sound fantastic! 2) The budget sound design is something I struggle with cause for the most part having a "real" explosion and real mech always sounds the best. You can find free/cheap gun samples on FreeSound.org but it becomes a battle of "you're stuck with what you got" vs having microphone options to make what you want. Alternatively signing up for Soundly you can get some awesome weapon sounds in there, but you'll pay monthly for them. Trust me I'm no stranger to how expensive this stuff is, I've been out recording my own gun sample library for the last 3 months and I'm about $40,000 in the hole. That be the reason why most of this stuff is this expensive.

    @@AftertouchAudio I can see how having "low quality ingredients makes a low quality dish." but I have been getting pretty far with a bit of creative use of low-quality gunshots, fireworks, and LOTS of processing, which I will admit makes a much lower quality sound, but if you keep the workflow consistent (I.E using that same sorts of processing and sound sources across weapons) you make something that sounds pretty good, if not like what you started with. Effectively building the sounds of a gunshot from the ground up with explosions, clicks and other foly, tails of real gunshots, and lot of processing. Even if it doesn't sound as good, I just don't see the point of teaching people who are probably amateurs, how to use the highest-end tech and samples that costs 1000's of dollars. It would be good IMO to make a video that goes over sound designing using basic tools and free/cheap samples (or using recordings of household items) to let people practise sound design skills so they may eventually be able to justify paying for those better things.

    Push the sound harder into a limiter if you want it louder. If you are just using a limiter to catch the peaks then you won't have much in terms of perceived volume increase,, yif loud is what you are after then you'll need to push your sounds into the limiter or compressor, harder.

I think fast attack time and long release time that in your video,will make the transient too much compression. Maybe i was wrong,it's only my opinion,can you give me your opinion?

    Great video, very entertaining and informative. I have one query though. You talked about creating LFE layers for each gun. Do you mean actual LFE channel sound or bass layers? It's an important distinction to make. If you send all your bass frequencies to the LFE channel the guns might be lacking low frequencies when played in normal stereo, without an LFE channel.

  • @AftertouchAudio

    @AftertouchAudio

    "Dont have the money for expensive recording equipment or guns? Well heres a library of gun sounds for 70 - 150$ per single gun!" Good video dude, I'm learning from your channel and appreciating your content, but god it is infuriating how expensive everything is in the world of audio, when it comes to VST's and Sample Packs. Does anybody who doesn't already have a decent career actually fucking PAY for VST's and sample packs? They often cost more than a lot of DAW's themselves which is kinda unreasonable imo. By the time you get a good library of VST's, some sound libraries, and some mics, your easily in the 10's of thousands of dollars.

  • @AftertouchAudio

    @AftertouchAudio

    Things tend to be expensive due to the cost of production. Just to give you an idea for some behind the scenes stuff, I’m recording my own personal gun library in February. It is going to use a lot of equipment and is going to contain 90+ weapons. Now with all that being said, the cost of this library “on my end” is in the $40,000 range. I need to have the equipment to record it (which is a huge investment in of itself), then I need insurance for the shoot, I need to hire the field recordists to assist with the production, buy out all of the gun range spots for a day so we are the only people on the rage to shoot these guns, but the ammo and rent the guns. I’m taking the biggest risk with investing this amount of money to make a library to sell. You’d actually be surprised how many libraries are produced at a loss, but if we did not have people out there making new libraries, every film/game would sound the same.
