Ryan, great job as always! Loved this file last year and while I didn’t have nearly the success you had, we got a late start after moving off base. Love the details, especially appreciate the marketing hints. Only thing I did different was a stop block for the batching of the tops…I’m lazy and hate marking each piece!

Thank you! I actually do use a stop block with my lanterns when I work through a batch of each lantern. For instance, when I make 10 of each design I use a stop block, whereas with just one of each it didn’t make sense. Great idea! And good luck selling this year!

Your file saved a lot of time getting this setup and running. I could have created my one files but it was well worth the cost to have the crv files ready to go. I just ran your file tonight. Had to do a little fiddling because my pickets were rougher than yours and I had to joint an edge and rip the other creating a slightly narrower stock. I resized and centered the faces and off I went. Only problem I ran into was on the third face the eye bound up when it came loose but it kept running. Didn't realize that it caused the X axis steppers get off by about 1/2 an inch. The next two faces were cut right on the edge of the board. I stopped the cut after the 5th face was cut. I created a new toolpath for just the last two faces and reset, homed and zeroed and ran the last two. By the way, for a more precise way of setting the Z axis to .6 inches, you can go into the MDI interface and enter the command "g0z0.6", hit play and the Z axis will move right to exactly .6 inches above the spoilboard.

@@SawdustandStuff I added a toolpath to drill shallow holes inside the eyes and a few of the larger pieces. After I run that TP, I shoot 23 ga. pins into those holes so that when those pieces are cut free they are held down. No issues with the second run. My wife sent a picture of them to my daughter who was at a friends house when she got the text. I got my first order.

Great video and tutorial! Do you plane the faces to remove the roughness or use them right off the shelf (after picking the best ones)? My selection is pretty rough here.

Those puck lights are over 3.00 ea now. I found the tea lights are too dim, but offering them anyways. Good tip on doing the photos in dim light so they look better lit up. I took photos during the day and they don't show any lit up effect - consequently I have sold none after posting on 3 local groups on Facebook groups and also marketplace. I started at 20.00 ea then 4 days later dropped it to 15.00 ea. I have 8 different jack-o-lantern faces and am offering full sets of 8 for 100.00 but still no takers. Maybe people around here are influenced by the imported stuff at Dollar Tree or Hobby Lobby? Discouraging - going to try re-photographing them in the evening and hope it helps them sell.

Ryan, don't have a CNC, so was wondering if I buy the templates does it have JPG or PDF so that I can print the faces stencils off for use or is it strictly for the computer? Very good video and am now a subscriber. I stumbled up on this, and yeah, I'm late.

Lowes has 5/4-in x 6-in x 8-ft Cedar Smooth 4 Sides Air-dried Lumber for $10.48 in stock In Mass. These are deck Boards and about 1" thick. You can plane them down to .6" inches to make them the same thickness as a picket. width is 5.5", It adds some extra time / cost to the project buts its certainly doable with the cedar that they have at Lowes. It is taking a lot of material off / lots of wood chips. took me about 1 hr to plane down 10 boards. cost was $110 for 10 boards (80ft) total

Other woods work as well! Treated pine especially. Or you could just add finish to them and use whatever wood you'd like!

Do you take money upfront for the presale, I could see people in my area being turned off by that.

Thanks for the video. Love the lesson. Wife says I have to pay for my tools. How much sanding do you have to do because when I use my down cut bit on I have to do some sanding around the eyes and the nose Etc and it sucks to get in those little grooves. Also love the Mountain Dew zero there. Drink of champions.

I use a compression bit to avoid sanding. I ONLY Sand if my wood is still wet when I cut it. big fan of mt dew zero!!

@@SawdustandStuff I bet that has something to do with it too it rained the night before in the lumber yard at Menards when I picked up my pickets. Had almost two solid weeks of no rain and then the night before I want to do the project it rains.

yes, that works with your machne and software. you may have to adjust sizes. not sure what size your machineis.

What feeds and speeds are you running? I purchased the files but since I'm using Vcarve Pro 10.5 I can't load them. Just curious to know based on what i was running them at. I run the Whiteside RD1600 1/8" bit but I use pretty conservative speeds on my Xcarve. Once face takes me around 15 minutes to carve out at .45" thick.

I think .125 DOC and 100ipm? i believe it's in one of the comments somewhere on here if you want to look for it.

is there a way to break them down to individual cuts instead of cutting all seven on two boards? I have a hobby cnc and would like to cut them separately for my own purpose. They look awesome and this would be a great project to start for our own personal use for decorating before branching out to selling them possibly.

Where do you get your cedar fence pickets? I've checked all the big box stores and other places around where I live and there are NO cedar fence pickets... That seems to be a thing up north or something. Ppl in the south don't seem to use cedar fence pickets. Only cedar I can find is cedar boards that are expensive. My only option are white wood boards.. They are kinda crappy and warp like crazy.

@@SawdustandStuff you could also use composite brad nails that won't break your bit, and add them in locations where the patterns are being cut if you're worried about loose pieces.

What's your plunge and feed rates? I ran mine on my Shapeoko and it takes like 30 minutes and to an hour to cut a board full of one design depending on the design. You said you cut all 7 in 26 minutes. My default speeds and feeds are obviously way too conservative.

I don't, no. with a rustic project like this I just don't care. But, I know others will nail from the sides of the lantern instead of the face. I personally think this makes them look worse (Having two grain directions on the front of the lantern)

To fully make 6-7 lanterns, how many pickets would you say you used?

6x6x1 cedar here (in Canada) is at $11. Guess at $25 for each lantern and if you can make 2 of them per board. Guess it's not too bad of a profit

Both the light choices you selected are indoor use only. Your customers don’t intend on placing these outside? I guess there is a risk of them being stolen.

indoor means they aren't weatherproof. Since they're under a lantern I don't see them getting rained on.

Dude you're essentially selling your boxes for less than $20. $30 with free shipping, knowing that shipping these is $10+ in most cases.. Is BS. Then you are releasing these files so everybody and their brother can do the same and undercut each other. This doesn't help anyone in this business it just hurts everyone.

i'm not responsible for how others run their business, but my average profit this year per lantern was over $15. Considering i made 250 in one weekend, that's a $3750 profit in one weekend. You do what you want, but I'm gonna keep it up with my lantern strategy. Thanks for the view:)
