This website is a gold mine of information on raw feeding. They also have an alternate recipe for grinding your own meat, and a bunch of other alternate recipes: feline-nutriti...
*I did not formulate this recipe, I adapted it from feline-nutrition.org to work for me. I did not change any ingredient amounts, just how I source them.
Supplements you'll need in order to make this recipe:
Salmon Oil amzn.to/3icjnTl
Taurine amzn.to/3if0Y8v
B-Complex amzn.to/3396nYu
Vitamin E amzn.to/3bCnohz
Psyllium Husk Powder amzn.to/2FhWaRj
*Do not omit supplements, or change amounts! This is a balanced recipe, changing the ingredients can lead to deficiencies and/or too much of a supplement.
Safe Handling and Preparation:
- Sanitize surface before making. (I use hot water & vinegar.)
- Cover surface in news paper, or something similar for easy clean up.
- If using meat from Blue Ridge Beef, keep frozen until you're going to make it
- Always use very fresh meat.
- Thaw meat in fridge, not at room temp
- Keep meats in the fridge while you're preparing everything else. Don't leave it out.
- Minimize time that meat is out in room temp.
- I suggest using gloves. I use food grade nitrile gloves. You can get these online, or at a food service store.
- Portion and freeze immediately. If unable to freeze immediately, refrigerate and then freeze asap.
- Wash and sanitize everything afterward
- Wash food bowls after every meal.
Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio/Percentage of Bone:
Ideal ratio is 1.1:1 (first number is calcium, second number is phosphorus.)
But this ratio can vary from 0.9:1 up to 1.5:1
Another way this can be measured is by using 7-10% raw bone.
(If using pre-ground meat, like in this video, just find out from the manufacturer what the percentage of bone is, or what the calcium to phosphorus ratio is. The label should include the amount of phosphorus and the amount of calcium. These amounts can be easily converted to find the ratio.)
Great article to get over the fear of calcium to phosphorus ratios: feline-nutriti...
Disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian, or a nutritionist. If you choose to make your cat's food, you assume all risk and liability. Please see my official disclaimer for more info: www.furraticbe...
Recipe for this Homemade Raw Cat Food:
- 4.5 lbs of Chicken Ground with the Bone In (raw) (Blue Ridge Beef, or another brand that has the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio/percentage of bone)
- 7 ounces of Raw Chicken Liver
- 14 ounces of Raw Chicken Hearts
- 8 ounces Drinking Water
- 4 Egg Yolks
- 2000 mg Taurine
- 4000 mg Salmon or Krill Oil
- 200 IU Vitamin E (dry or oil form)
- 200 mg B-Complex
- 1.5 tsp Lite Iodized Salt (If using regular iodized salt, cut amount in half)
- 4 tsp Psyllium Husk Powder (This is optional, but I always use it. It adds fiber, with minimal carbs. If your cat is transitioning from a commercial food, I highly suggest it, so they don't get constipated.)

My cat was throwing up approx 2x a week. I was feeding her organic kibble and canned food-. After eating Darwins for about 2 weeks she stopped vomiting, filled out perfectly, her coat became super shiny- it's been fantastic. The only problem is the bill. So as I know raw cat food works I will be cookin for the kitten. Thanks so much for this recipe- this will cut my expenses tremendously.

I am excited I found your video. I watched one before this that was a cooked cat food (yes there was rice in it) and they didn’t put any of the supplements you have. It was basically chicken, pumpkin, rice and flax seed. So yours first off seems much healthier, and easier AND so happy to learn about Blue Ridge Beef. I never heard of them before. I was ordering raw food for my cats and dog from Darwin’s but that was costing me well over $400 every 3-4 weeks. So I am looking for a cheaper version that my cats will love. This one seems like it. It looked like you put only one package of the Blue Ridge Beef in and you wrote in the recipe 4.5 lbs. do they make it in 5lb rolls?? I only see 2lb and 30lb rolls. So if there are other sizes can you tell me where to look?? Thank you I appreciate it. Can’t wait to make this for my cats. They are back on the crap from the store and I hate that so much. Hopefully by end of the week they can be eating this recipe.

That's actually really scary! I truly hope that people aren't feeding that exclusive to their cats! 🙀😿 Feeding like that is literally deadly. Yes, the price of premade cat food is through the roof! I spend around $100 every six weeks for 4 cats with homemade. Sometimes I splurge and buy them some quail, venison, or duck. So, regarding blue ridge beef, a lot of people are deciding not to go with them, because they were found to have some very questionable practices during an inspection in 2019. I used them for a long time before I knew this, and never had an issue. But it's important to do your own research and make informed decisions. There is a website that I recommend called hare-today.com. They're a wonderful company. They're a bit pricier than Blue Ridge, but if you are able to pay the extra this is what I would highly recommend. They are a more ethical, and smaller company that adheres to higher standards. However, I would choose Blue Ridge Beef over big pet food any day and every day. But to answer your question, Blue Ridge Beef does sell 5 lb chubs. A few of my local groomers carry their brand, and I ordered a box of 6, 5lb rolls about every six weeks. On the Blue Ridge Beef website, they have a store locator, so you can see if any place near you sells them. I totally understand that feeling of knowing you're feeding them crap and wanting to do better. My cats really love this recipe, and have had amazing results! I truly wish you, your cats and dog the best in whatever you decide! 😻

They said it basically has all the nutrients you would need instead of looking for each separately. So I’ll try it out and see how the animals like it and the. Place a larger order. Wish us luck.

@@furraticbehavior8494 Hi! I would like to cook food for my cats. They love turkey cold cuts and rotisserie chicken. I dont give it to them all the time & no greasy chicken & no chicken skin & no cooked bones either. Bone powder Would I need to still add in extra taurine? & vitamins? I saw the video of the woman using rice added into her cooked cat food. She also uses pumpkin as well. Rice is a definite no no! Cats need meat, not carbs. I have a multi cat household. The vitamins and taurine go with one pound of meat, correct? Pls kindly advise. I dont want to try raw right now. • @furraticbehavior8494

    @furraticbehavior8494

    2 жыл бұрын

Well, I asked that first because the age of your kitten is going to influence how much and how often you feed them. For the adult cats, feed between 2 and 4% of their IDEAL body weight. To do this, just multiply their ideal weight in pounds by 16 (to convert it to ounces). For instance, if your cat's IDEAL weight is 10lbs, it would be 160 oz. Then multiply that by either 0.02, 0.03, or 0.04, depending on the percentage you want to feed. I usually feed around 3% but you can always experiment to see what works best for your cats. I feed each of my cats 4.8 oz for the entire day. Feed your cats at least twice per day. I feed mine 3x per day. I just split 4.8 oz into 3 meals for each of my cats every day. Kittens are different, because they're growing. They can require twice as much food per pound of body weight as an adult cat. You should also feed them a lot more often, because their stomachs are too little to take in too much food at one time. I would feed a four month old at LEAST 3-4x per day. Until they're around 6 months, then you can back down on the amount and frequency. Personally, I would probably start with 6% of their body weight, and see how they do. You can always give them more, or feed a little less. It's almost impossible to overfeed a kitten. I hope that all makes sense!! I'll leave you to calculate the monthly amount, because I don't have all of the necessary info or know what percentage you plan to feed.

Actually, the original reason for my looking into raw feeding was because two of my cats were having persistent UTIs. My boy was even having sticky blood in his urine. No matter what I did, I couldn't resolve the issue. As soon as I started making this raw recipe, the UTIs went away almost immediately! I was absolutely amazed and incredibly relieved. They've been on raw food for over 2 years now, and haven't had any recurrence 😺 I highly recommend it!!! Is he currently eating dry food? Dry food causes chronic dehydration (among many other issues, because it is not species appropriate). They can't drink enough to offset the damage caused by dry food. Urinary trouble will happen first, and then serious strain is put on the kidneys. I can also link a product in here from a company that I really love. You may want to consider adding it in to help with the crystals, and build up his immune system.

All four of my cats are extremely healthy, and even my cat who has a heart condition had bloodwork, a urinalysis, and fecal test a few months ago and they said everything looks great. But I think he's going to be around the same size as well. Because of this, I feed them all the same. But with underweight or overweight cats, the trick is to feed according to the weight that they should be, not the weight they are. I highly suggest using this calculator: feline-nutrition.org/html_pages/Recipe_Calculator.html It does all the math for you, and gets rid of the guesswork! 💕

I can't say for certain, because I have no clue what his condition is, and I have no clue what you're feeding currently. He could have parasites, food sensitivities, etc, etc. All I can really say is that I have had absolutely amazing results feeding this recipe to my cats. It has improved their fur, skin, energy levels, hydration, teeth and gums, digestion, completely stopped UTIs, and more. It's been quite a miracle in my personal experience. You can check out the full detailed post in the description to read more about it. If you want to give it a try, you can always add a little bit to his current food and see how he does. If he seems to do well slowly add in a little bit more, with less of his current food over 7-10 days. But that is totally your call! Some cats are pickier and it takes a bit more work to get them transitioned. *Disclaimer: I am not a vet. Any advice you do or do not take is done so at your own risk.*

  • @furraticbehavior8494

Hi Robert! The additives are absolutely essential, due to the fact that they are not getting fed whole prey. In the wild, they would be eating every part, including the head, eyes, brain, stomach, etc. Feeding without the additional vitamins will have detrimental consequences for a cat, and can even result in death. So, I cannot stress it enough. There are ways to feed whole prey (Humanely, do not ever feed a cat live prey, please) but research should be done first, or work with a clinical pet nutritionist, to ensure there isn't nutrient loss, and they're getting enough of everything they need.

Why can't cats have egg white and what can be done with the whites than i wouldn't want to waste them

  • @furraticbehavior8494

    @furraticbehavior8494

    3 жыл бұрын

Good question! The reason cats shouldn't eat raw egg whites is because they contain a protein, called avidin, that interferes with the absorption of biotin, which is a B vitamin. You can cook them and feed them to your cat if they like cooked eggs. You can also cook them for yourself, or dogs, or use them in a recipe that calls for egg whites. I typically give them to my boyfriend to cook for himself, or I cook them and feed them to the dogs, because my kitties aren't crazy about them, and I don't personally eat them. Just make sure that you're following proper sanitation methods, therefore ensuring there is no cross contamination between the raw meat and eggs, so no one gets sick. If you have questions about proper handling and preparation check out my homemade cat food post, here: www.furraticbehavior.com/homemade-cat-food-the-art-of-feeding-your-cat-for-optimal-health-and-longevity/ These are just a few of options, you're at liberty to get as creative as you'd like 😊 Please let me know if you have any more questions, or are in need of more suggestions! ❤️

@@Mia-yt8cb it honestly depends on the type of kibble and canned/wet. The prices just vary so much. I will say that making my own raw food is 1/3 of what I would be paying for premade. And a higher end canned food can be more expensive than homemade raw for sure. As far as feeding them kibble along with raw, I personally would advise against this. For a few reasons: 1) I don't recommend feeding any kibble whatsoever. This is mainly due to the high carb content. In a nutshell, it predisposes cats to a myriad of health problems including kidney disease, UTIS, dental disease, diabetes, and obesity. 2) The carb content in dry food reduces their ability to fully digest the raw food, and can make them vulnerable to bacterial infections.

This recipe takes into account the taurine content in the liver and hearts. Taurine is absolutely vital for cats, because they cannot synthesize or produce it. Without a sufficient amount, cats can experience retinal degeneration, weakening of muscles in the heart, leading to dilated cardiomyopathy, less bile production, leading to digestive issues, and more. It can take months for taurine deficiency to show up in cats. Furthermore, there are no cases of overdose in cats due to taurine supplementation. So, please be safe and ensure you are giving your kitties enough ❤️ this recipe has an amazing track record, and has never been known to cause deficiencies or over supplementation.

I'm really happy that your cat is doing so well, that is absolutely amazing. Hunting helps so much, because this is their natural diet and it helps to keep them hydrated and nourished with high protein. That's the main purpose of this raw diet, to mimic their natural diet. Unfortunately, most cats that are fed kibble all of their lives don't have the same amazing outcome. Whatever you do for your kitty is your choice and I have complete respect for that. We are all just doing the best we can with the information we have. I will say that my cats had chronic health issues until I switched to this food. I pay about $100 every six weeks for four cats, which is way less than I would pay if I were feeding wet food. You can buy cheaper versions of some of the supplements I listed, I just included the ones that I use personally. Once you buy the supplements they last a long time, and if you were only feeding one cat you'd be paying closer to $20 per month to make this food for them.
