Homemade Cat Food Recipes Vet Approved | Basic Blueprint

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This easy homemade turkey and pumpkin pate cat food recipe make 5-6 days of food for the average cat. It costs the same or less than many commercial and premium cat foods out there that are laden with by-products, chemicals, and ingredients that are unfit for human consumption.
My recipes follow a basic blueprint:
* Choose 1 pound of protein that is lightly cooked in coconut oil
* Add 1 cup of water or bone broth (without the added onion and garlic and salt)
* Add the needed calcium, taurine, trace minerals and vitamins, and grass-fed beef organ meat. All ingredients in the Holistic Vet Blend nutrient mix are human-grade.
* There are optional add-ins such as 1-2 eggs, greens (kale, spinach, parsley), pumpkin, carrot, and some squash to name a few. You can add 2-4 TBSP to the recipe of any one of these.
* Last but not least you will need an Omega-3 source. Choose from
sardines in water, mackerel, salmon, or HVB Icelandic Omega -3 fish oil.

    I've found that the servings of Meomix I've been feeding my cat no longer sates him. He's about 6-years-old, so maybe his dietary needs have changed, or, perhaps Meowmix is cutting their food with filler to keep prices down in a market where cat food prices have become absurdly high. Either way, little guy deserves better eats. This video was a good guide for what to and not to put in it. I may not outright go full time homemade, but it's probably a good idea to supplement his diet with some homemade meals.

    Today I watched a video of how dog food is made and what’s in it. Can’t imagine it being any different for cats. Felt miserable. Had I known I would have not given them commercial food! Your recipe is the best I’ve seen by far and I’ve put in an order. I really hope it works out with my picky cat lol!

    I came across this video the other day and out of many I have watched yours was the most informative. I went to your site and downloaded the free mini cookbook and decided to and bought the full paperback cookbook for cats. I haven't owned a cat since mine died back in 2011 and recently a stray cat has adopted us. We took him in and took him to be scanned.... not microchipped and not neutered either. He looks to be about 3 yrs old they said when I got him scanned. Here the law is you have 30 days to actively look for potential owners and I did that for over a month while I fostered him as the shelters here are overrun with cats and kitten season has begun but 2 weeks ago the shelter told me that it has been 2 months no and no one has come forward and I could bring him in and they would prepare to try to adopt him or if I wanted to keep him I could as the 30 day period has lapsed. We chose to keep him and now he is part of our family. I've had him on ACANA cat food...... he gets half wet and half dry per day. (he just grazes on the dry cat food so he doesn't get much at all.... 1/2 - 3/4 c per day if that.) And the ACANA canned cat food ingredients look good but the cost is just crazy. Here it costs $2.79 for a 5.5 oz. can. For a months worth that is about $84 a month. I've been researching and wanting to switch him to homemade cat food which I'm seeing is healthier for them anyway. Thank You for sharing this video. I learned so much from it. Now in your recipe for the 1 lb. meat can that be 1 lb of regular meat (meaning not the prepackaged ground meat)? Like I was thinking buying bone in chicken thighs, skin on and boiling them and making my own bone broth.... just water and the meat...... and then removing the chicken from the broth and let cool before removing all meat from the bones and then blending like you did the ground chicken. Just curious. Again thank you for sharing your expertise.

    Thanks a ton for the support and for all the love you've shown to your new cat. It's awesome to hear you're considering homemade food. And yes, you can make your own ground chicken. It's actually a great option for cats, as it's lean and high in protein. Sounds like your kitty is in for some delicious meals!

    Thank you for making such a clear video! I was really looking for something that was actually vet approved. I was wondering, I have no problem dealing with organ meat and actually in supermarkets near me it's really affordable. How does the ratios here change if I'm using organ meat? Can I use mostly organ meat instead of other meats ( it's a lot cheaper than other meat) i've got access to heart, liver, and gizzards. Also, how can we incorporate bone? Would it have to be raw or cooked down or grounded? Thank you so much in advance!

  • @HolisticVet

    @HolisticVet

  • @HolisticVet

    @HolisticVet

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello G Silver! There is organ meat already present. You could add some additional chicken heart or gizzard, but I would not add additional liver as there would be too much Vitamin A in the diet. And you would stick to the recipe. For example, if you did 3/4 pound of ground turkey or chicken and 1/4 pound of gizzards and heart meat.

    After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. @@HolisticVet Greetings, I am seeking clarification. At the start of your reply here, you state cooked homemade food can be refrigerated 4 days but later in your comment you state 6mos. Did you mean "raw food" been be "frozen" 6mos? Do you offer a raw food recipe or were you stating a general reference for proper storage?

Most ground chicken I find at the grocery store has misleading labels saying that it's " low calorie" or "skinless" but doesn't state a percentage.. so I decided to make my own minced chicken 😀.. I'm feeding a kitten so which parts do you suggest that I use and how much of each part? Should I remove the skin or keep some? Thanks for your efforts 😊

    Hi, there is organ meat already present in the premix. You could add some additional chicken heart or gizzard but I would not add additional liver as there would be too much Vitamin A in the diet. And you would stick to the recipe. For example if you did 3/4 pound ground turkey or chicken, you will only add 1/4 pound of gizzards and heart meat.

    The Senior Blend would be a good choice as it has added B vitamins, fiber, and kidney-friendly Phosphorus levels. It would be applicable to your situation. It is not protein-restricted like many renal diets (that instead have more carbohydrates and fat), but cats in a hypermetabolic state, such as hyperthyroidism, actually would benefit from the senior blend. Add more broth or water for hydration. If your cat has elevated phosphorus you will still have to do a Phosphate binder. But I just want to clarify that Holistic Vet Blend is not a prescription diet. You could prepare the homemade food and mix it with the prescription diet. You would have to monitor your cat for any diet changes. Always stick with wet food.

    I do not recommend dry food for cats. Adding each of the nutrients would require using tiny amounts of trace minerals and Vitamins that are not even measureable unfortunately. The premix is made up in very large batches so that the trace minerals and vitamins can be weighed and added in.
