HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PUREE: Easy Pumpkin Purée from Scratch/Sugar Pie & Carving Variety

When you're done using pumpkins for Fall decoration, don't toss them out. Turn them into Pumpkin Purée. It's so easy to do, and - in my opinion - fresh pumpkin is so much better than pumpkin from a can. Here's how to make pumpkin purée:
Use a sharp knife to remove stem and cut pumpkin in half. Take out all the seeds, as well as the stringy membrane. It's helpful to use the side of the spoon to scrape off the membrane. When pumpkin is clean, place flesh side down on a cookie sheet that has been lined with parchment paper, cover with aluminum foil, and bake at 400º for 40 minutes to an hour, depending on size. The pumpkin is cooked when you can easily pierce through the skin and into the flesh with a fork. Allow to cool, then spoon out all the flesh of the pumpkin and place it into a food processor or blender. Purée until smooth. If you are using a Sugar Pie pumpkin, typically, there is no need for straining. But if you are using a carving pumpkin, it has more liquid in it, and you will need to strain it. That is easily done by lining a colander with multiple layers of cheese cloth, then pouring your pumpkin on top of the cheese cloth into the colander, and allow enough time for all the liquid to drain out. Place pumpkin purée in sealed container and keep refrigerated until ready to use in your favorite pumpkin recipes.

DO NOT THROW AWAY THE LIQUID!!! I used this method to make pumpkin purée from regular pumpkins that I grew in my garden last year. But instead of throwing the pumpkin juice down the drain, I saved it and made a pumpkin syrup out of it. It’s super simple and oh so tasty.

Haha! I have a friend who accidentally ate a dog biscuit and loved it. She had gone into a cute boutique and wasn't wearing her glasses. Be she was able to make out a little sign in front of the treats that said "Take One," so she did. She enjoyed it so much, she asked the person behind the counter if she could have a second one, and that's when they told her the treats were for people who came in with their dogs! She was so embarrassed. Who knows? They probably had pumpkin in them!

I roast my pumpkins whole, after cutting off the top, or sometimes I just pierce it in several places, then put on a baking sheet to roast. If the pumpkin is large, you can remove an oven rack. It cooks in about the same time as the cut pumpkins, depending on the thickness of the flesh. It's so much easier to cut it and remove the stringy bits and seeds when it's cooked.

Great minds think alike, que no? Great job and I loved your canning jars with the flowers!

Thank you thank you! I just have myself to feed this Thanksgiving, so I just need to puree one small pumpkin to add to the can pumpkin I have handy. I have to do keto, erythritol for sugars. I am doing a homemade pie crust with almond flour extra blanched with xanthan gum, egg and cubed butter. I have some sugar free vanilla pudding to mix with the pumpkin when it comes time to mix the pumpkin with all the goodies and spice. I got the recipe off of youtube, hopefully it works out. :)

Keto is different, you have to get the skills down just right for the texturing. My oven is small and I think that is why the pie got overdone. I roasted my turkey in an Oster Turkey Roaster, came out delicious. You see, I have diabetes and sometimes the stores have sugar free pies and sometimes not. I usually try to use it within a couple of weeks. Because there are no preservatives, on about the third week, you'll start seeing mold form. So, if you don't think you'll be using it by then, it's a good idea to freeze it.

  • @bondjane007

I didn’t hear the temperature that you were going to cook the pumpkin out I’m guessing 350 so I’m gonna do 350 for like how long it takes for the pumpkin to get soft I’ve never seen anyone put aluminum foil on top of it. Most people don’t do that but maybe that helps I don’t know I did see some that were kind of burnt on the top but it didn’t seem to affect the pumpkin at all the meat of it. I don’t have any foil so I’ll probably have to do it without foil but I think I have parchment paper so hopefully I can do it at 350 and it’s an electric stove. I’ll keep my eye on it and I guess I will freeze some of it so I can have I don’t have a big processor I just have a little blender and a little processor so I have to use them to make the purée and I guess I’ll drain out the water.

  • @bondjane007

I heard that you can leave the water in if you’re going to make soup so I’ll probably leave some water in for the soup ones and the rest of it I will drain I bought the strainer cloth so that I can get the water out and then I will probably freeze some of the pumpkin so I can have it puréed and ready to go.

If you mean keeping the pumpkin water in the purée, it makes it way too runny and difficult to work with in any recipe. I've tried that before and made a mess. Now, I run it through cheese cloth every single time. If you mean using the pumpkin water for something else, I'm not sure. I've never given it any thought and have always just poured it down the sink. Perhaps, someone else can weigh in on this conversation. I'd be curious to know.
