How to make Hachee: Old-fashioned Dutch Beef Stew with Onions

Learn how to make #hachee, an old-fashioned Dutch #beef #stew that dates back to the Middle Ages. This recipe with beef, #onions, vinegar, and apple butter is traditionally served with red cabbage and potatoes! However, I love it with just some mashed potatoes. This is typically a fall or winter dish, but I was craving it, so we made it; even though it's summer!
I loved this beef stew when I was growing up... but I wasn't a fan of the red cabbage that we typically served with it. It's a good thing that this beef stew is so flavorful because I would mix red cabbage and hachee on my spoon, and all I'd taste is this deliciously meaty, oniony, and tangy stew!

    I've always loved hachee. My grandfather always served it with red cabbage as well. His insistence that I eat it was what made me begin to enjoy red cabbage.

    My grandpa always put the bay leaf directly in the stew. He said it was good luck to find one in your bowl. :)

    I always called hachee is rendang version of the Netherlands and of course it is not true..lol😂 and I also made my rendang by rendering the meat and browning them before I put in the oven for slow cooking. Thicken quickly

    Ik vind hachee juist lekker met aardappelpuree en rode kool. Heb het zelf nog niet zo vaak gemaakt, dit ziet er uit als een goed recept, dank.

    I do however like it with rode kool hutspot (mashed red cabbage and potatoes), but with grated apple and a spoonful of chutney as well. That mix of sour and saltiness of the beef hachee and sweetness of the apple and chutney is a great and tasty combo.

    My mother used to make it at Halloween with Hutspot and called it "Witches Stew" to get us to eat it. It's still a family favorite and I've got friends asking to be invited over around Halloween so they can eat it too.

    I love that she gave it a cool name to “trick” the kids into eating it!!! I’ve always loved it, but if I didn’t, as a kid, that name would make me want to eat it!

    Great recipe! My mama always served hachee over rice! It's delicious that way! I like to add sliced and sauteed mushrooms at the end. No, it's not traditional, but it adds even more flavor.

    Hi Toine, een berichtje uit Nederland. Dank voor het delen en voor introduceren van een heerlijk Nederlands recept. Wellicht dat je het euk vind om eens te proberen. Mijn oma deed er 10 minuten voor het eind een flinke plak kruidkoek bij. Dat was altijd heerlijk en het dikte de saus ook wat. Groetjes uit Nederland, John

    what you really need to have done is keep the fat in and get rid of it afterwards as it adds a softness and more flavour to the dish.

    Hoi Antoine, het ziet er lekker uit. Misschien wat jeneverbessen erbij en grootmoeders ontbijtkoek erbij als bindingsmiddel. En afblussen met wat rode wijn. Geen bloem. En ka, een beetje azijn om het wat zurig te maken. En peper en zout na smaak toevoegen.

    Absolutely you can freeze this. I often make a big batch and freeze it.

    1. Er is geen bloem in hachee the saus is niet geboden. 2. De uien zijn klaar wanneer ze bruin zijn 'gekarameliserd'. Dit geeft de hachee de mooie bruine kleur. 3. Snee de vet niet weg dit geeft smaak 4. Geen runderbouillon alleen water. De smaak van de hachee komt from the vlees en de laurierblad. Hachee is niet ouderwets het is een traditioneel Nederlandse gerecht.
