How to Make Fresh Beats with Stolperbeats: FULL TUTORIAL + 3 PATCH EXAMPLES

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you want to mix up your modular beats and get more creative with grooves then Stolperbeats might be what you need. It generates "off grid" beat rhythms, sliding beats around in a style like the famous J. Dilla. It fits perfectly in the Eurorack world, but is also able to send MIDI to drum machines or synths.
In this video I give you a deep tutorial on how to use Stolperbeats, and show 3 examples of using it in a Eurorack modular and with MIDI. Each example builds on the previous one so follow along as I explain how I use it in my patches. I'll also explore using it for rhythmic modulation too, firing off triggers to envelopes to create movement in a patch.
UPDATE: In the MIDI config section starting at 12:50 I got the lines swapped for Velocity and Note duration. The top white line represents velocity and the bottom red line represents note duration. Other than that it's correct.

Stolperbeats roughly translates into 'drunken beats', and the idea with this module is to get your rhythms away from the traditional 4-4 grid. Beats can be slide around early and late using a shuffle control, which applies changing shuffling of triggers against the grid, the effect being subtle to extreme.
In this tutorial video I take you on a tour of the module explaining how it works and how to use it in your patches. Along the way I show you 3 patching ideas, and we jam out and make some beats. Oh, and I get a haircut too.

    Love the video - great explanation, easy to follow and well narrated! And the example patches are absolutely ace! Already noted on the other patch + play style videos - the music ideas are fantastic. Are you secretly making a SynthDad album? : D Thank you for making this!

    Came across your channel from the Deluge video you did with BoBeats a while back. I don't have any modular gear (hoping to change that by next year), but I watch a lot of your videos and have learned so many great patching ideas from your channel. I actually have a lot of fun in VCV rack now because of you, and also learned a lot of great techniques for my Zoia pedal from you as well. Love the pace you teach with in your tutorials, you're truly an underrated channel. Keep up the good work mate! :)

    You seem to love the Squid Salmple in your setups! Have you checked out the Tubbutec 6equencer before? It has 8 trigger outputs in 6hp, seems like it would be perfect for your smaller cases.

    Hey there, Synthdad. Love your tutorials for the Oxi One, and I think you were also instrumental in me grabbing the Stolperbeats module. These are now my two favorite sequencers. Wondering if you've tried to use the Stolperbeats to clock the Oxi One and if you have any advice for making it work. I especially would love to be able to use the Stolperbeats SUBDIV out to give, e.g., a bass line on the Oxi One the same shuffled rhythm. But as far as I can tell, the Oxi One really wants a steady pulse, and there's no way to tell it to just advance one step with every trigger (which all analog sequencers like 0-CTRL, A-155, 245t do with ease). Am I missing something? Is there a way to kludge this?

  • @SynthDad

    @SynthDad

    I'd personally approach it the other way around and have the Oxi One clock the Stolperbeats over MIDI. Sending a shuffle clock to the Oxi will just confuse it and make it sad

    @@SynthDad That has been my experience, too. I was just hoping there might be something I was missing. I wonder how hard it would be (and, for that matter, whether it's too niche a feature for them to bother with) for Oxi to implement an analog style "pulse per step" function. Someone on the MSM discord suggested that if I wanted, say, a bass line whose rhythm was shuffled by Stolperbeats, I could get the gate from Stolperbeats and the pitch from the Oxi over midi using its mod matrix... Still haven't tried it bc I have not yet got a handle on the Oxi's mod matrix.

    So, you can send triggers out to a drum machine via midi, while simultaneously sending the same triggers out to your eurorack modules? Wow. What a well thought out, and designed, trigger sequencer. Great video!

    If you were going to buy one module like Queen of Pentacles, Squid Salmple, or the Erica/Sonic Potions LXR 02 to pair with Stolperbeats, what would it be?

  • @SynthDad

    @SynthDad

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s a really tough choice! I’d go with the Salmple because it can do much more than just percussion; long pads, sample slicing, re-sampling audio, even recording and playing back CV modulation.

    Hi! Is it possible to have different lenght for each sequence (16 step, 8, 12...), or different signature, or even different mult/div ? Also, can each trig can be offset around the "bar", playing with advance or delay,? Can we create songs, or sequence patterns? Not sure it's in the manual... Thanks a lot

  • @SynthDad

    @SynthDad

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi lots of questions there! Right now each track shares the same length and time signature. So you can’t have different clock divisions on each track. Of course this could be changed in a future firmware update. You can’t create songs in the sense of automatically having it switch patterns, but you can choose the patterns using CV, so you could create pattern changes using sequenced CV. Stolperbeats is more of a live jamming module for creating cool rhythms, not a fully fledged sequencer like a Deluge or Oxi One

    @@SynthDad sorry for that much questions, and thanks a lot for your answer. Excited and also hoping it gets updated, so it's not to much of a one trick sequencer, if it make sens... Cheers!

    Love all your tutorials Mark but for me SBeats I’d need to go to SPEC Savers😃and as I’m new to this Modular game far to complex, I need more SURGEON ideology, less is more, certainly for live use when lot of these modules would be difficult to control I firmly believe ( to late for me at 70 yrs) that building a live rig and gigs is way forward, forge a image promote live dynamic with Modular like DJs no income to be made with recorded tracks those days are gone, Live in your Face performance although I know this would take time, only my opinion not for everyone I know Thanks for your info, endeavours 👍🆒🎶🎶🎶🎶🇬🇧🔱👁🌈👽

    I hear you Martin, that's definitely an issue. But one way to think about a module like Stolperbeats is that it is for discovering "happy accidents". One button press and you suddenly have a whole new groove going. It's less of a programming module and more of a discovery one. As for live performances vs. recorded material, I'd say you are right.
