How to Make Epoxy Cutting Boards, (Out of Scraps!)
In my shop we make scrap wood faster than anything else so I made this set of cutting boards with the goal to minimize the amount go scrap I created. I am really please with the end result and the resin really brings the "scrap" pieces to life; To be honest the epoxy cutting boards were meant as an add-on but they ended up stealing the show. This technique also maximizes how much you can get out of one glue-up, because those take a lot of time , and hands on effort. Thanks for watching!

I appreciate you saying the resin ones aren't cutting boards, so many of these videos intentionally don't mention it or aren't knowledgeable enough to know that. Edit: Also I love the use of the bandsaw, it's a tool I've clearly underestimated. I knew it could curve like no other, but I didn't realize how good it was at being a table\circular saw.

How well do epoxy cutting boards last? Does cutting on them ruin the epoxy?

An epoxy board like this should be used as a cheeseboard, not for chopping up an onion, for example. As long as it is used like that the epoxy will hold up just fine.
Is it me or did I see the cutting board wobble (not flat) at the end? Eek. Other than that, the epoxy cheese boards are beautiful, great job. Look forward to more videos.

For this project we actually removed the factory finish using the drum sander and used what would be the top and bottom had it been used as a floor. The tongue and groove are on the sides of the flooring, that’s why we removed them.

Tyvek is our favorite. It should be linked in the video description.
The cutting boards are beautiful! However, for those of us who do a GREAT deal of cooking, by putting feet on the board you have lost the ability to use both sides of the board. Chefs keep the board from sliding by putting a damp cloth down first the the cutting board on top of the cloth. Keeps the board from sliding AND I can utilize both sides of the cutting board.

Interesting input. When we’re making boards we tend to do a mix. Different sizes, some with handles, some without, some with feet, some without etc. We sell them at Christmas time and figure the more varied the better so everyone can find what they want. This particular large one was something my sister wanted and we made it for her use.

So the mineral oil makes the epoxy resin food contact safe?
@MakersWorkshopLLC
3 жыл бұрын
The resin, once fully cured, is contact safe on its own (not good to chop veggies on though, to keep chips of it from getting into food) The mineral oil finishes off the wood, and also looks nice over the resin.
Do you have any concerns with using oak (since it was flooring, I’m assuming red oak) for cutting boards? I thought the rule of thumb was to refrain from using any open grained wood species. Oak is definitely hard enough, but bacteria and mildew love working their way into the grain.
@AA41975
Жыл бұрын
I've used red oak from Home Depot for a bunch of boards still in use over the last 10 years. As long as you clean them properly, they are fine. I use salt and lemon juice every once in a while to kill any little bacteria that might linger. Never an issue.
Epoxy does not hold up to being cut on with knives. Also it is safe for "food contact" but not to ingest. You will be getting lots of tiny little slivers of epoxy in your food. Considering most epoxies contain BPA or various types of solvents, its a bad idea.

Oak is a bad choice for cutting boards as it’s a porous wood and collect bacteria. Maple, Cherry, and Walnut are the wood of choice.

Why can’t you cut on a resin board?
@MakersWorkshopLLC

The resin can chip and get into the food so it is best to avoid. The right kind of resin makes a great cheese board though
unless your oak is none chipping or similar------it is recommended never to use oak on cutting boards
Hmmm putting paint thinner on a cutting board Idk🤔
@MakersWorkshopLLC
4 жыл бұрын
Paint thinner is common practice. It evaporates very quickly and we only use a very little amount just to get dust off. As long as it dries completely it shouldn’t be an issue. An alternative is rubbing alcohol (evaporates pretty quickly as well) or white vinegar (a longer dry time but for the peace of mind is possibly worth it depending)
@Kloran27

@@MakersWorkshopLLC I've never seen or heard of anyone till now using paint thinner to clean cutting boards.... it is not something I'd want coming into contact with boards I would use...

No need to if it’s not something you’re comfortable with. There are plenty of alternatives out there to choose from. What we do is just one opinion, and you should always do your own research and make whatever decision best suits you.
Cool pieces, but cutting/chopping onto resin will get particles on knife and into food which can be dangerous, especially with more use over time. There should be a health warning.

@@MakersWorkshopLLC I'd say a shiny paper might not soak thru or maybe a thick cardboard. But if you try it you might try it inside of a mold the first time when you pull the mold you will be able to see if it soaked thru. That way if it does leak you are safe inside a mold and don't have a big mess to clean up. Just a thought.
@MakersWorkshopLLC
4 жыл бұрын
A shiny paper may work. I would imagine the biggest challenge there would be rigidity for a mold; resin can be heavy. We have had consistent great result with the chipboard and tape. Its a relatively cheap option, that consistently works and resin spills can be very expensive and quite damaging to the shop so we stick with what we know 9 times out of 10. Thats not to say other alternatives are out there and if anyone tries out some alternatives I would love to hear how it goes!
so you ended up with one cutting board and 3 cheese boards
@MakersWorkshopLLC
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly
You should probably change the title to "How to Make Epoxy Serving Boards, (Out of Scraps!)" Since Epoxy can't be cut on, and you don't say that until the very end...
I don't know why these keep getting suggested to me... but that resin is just going to mark up terribly.
Please only use epoxy cutting boards for decoration. You really don't want bits of epoxy in your food.
The epoxy costs way more than the savings in the scrap.
epoxy is an extremely wasteful industry. the video should be called, how to create more waste out of scraps
