These clay projects are great for home decor and will inspire you to try to make dupes of other high end home decor. You'll start by creating a form (armature) with foil and then layering clay on top. Dip your fingertips in water if your clay starts to dry out or to smooth out any rough spots. Once your air dry clay creations are complete, you can paint them and add texture using paintbrushes or a sponge. I will also show you how to apply gold leaf to one project.

Let me know which of these projects was your favorite!
My favorite part was the tip about using scrap wood to get even thickness in your clay.

The bead "garland" looks like it could possibly be an Orthodox Chotki. I can't tell if it has 33 beads. I really love the idea of transferring napkin designs on the clay. That is so beautiful.

I’m so glad! It was definitely a challenge to make so many things, but I learned so much in the process. Have fun!
How can you ask me which I prefer as far as matching the originals? They were all spot on, or better. I loved the beads. So many ideas were going through my head, you can't imagine. I liked the bird, but can't decide if I liked him as you made him than had you given him more colorful ones. Sorry, I come here from the world of resin, where most of the creatures have colorful eyes. Channel owners are always coming up with ways to make eyes more realistic. It's a challenge to each other which I love watching. Resin is about color. Clay isn't necessarily even painted. That's why I am torn. I hope to see you (and friends) again very soon.

Those are all some great ideas!! I use air dry clay a lot, but with moulds and I attach the pieces to other projects, mainly furniture. Rather than try to get the wet clay to stick to dry clay just use good ol' tacky glue. I have to glue clay to clay, or wood, or glass or even plastic and I found that the Tacky Glue excels at. Thanks for giving me some good ideas to make some air dry clay projects that aren't using moulds! I love the cross and beads and definitely the trinket dish!

Thanks for sharing that tip, Gina, especially in such a kind way! I just took a course and learned more about using glue to attach pieces. The instructor mentioned using an acid free glue, but it never occurred to me to try tacky glue. I’m going to give that a try next time. Thanks! 💗

Hi, is air dry clay flammable. Can we use it with candles?
@FirstDayofHome
8 ай бұрын
It will become charred if it comes into direct contact with flames. I would use an LED candle for a short candleholder made with air dry clay.
Use gesso and scuff it up for it to stick ...

Hi Chrissy, I love the chunky beads & cross. I’ve never done any clay projects but I’m going to try to make some of those for Christmas gifts. Can you tell me an approximate size of the cross & did you still use foil on the second one? Thanks for the inspiration your work is amazing.
@FirstDayofHome

Hi Claudia! Thanks for the sweet comment. I’m glad you’re going to try some of these projects. I think it’s so fun to sculpt with clay. The cross is about 5 3/4 inches by 4.5 inches. Yes, I did use foil both times. You’ll use a lot less clay that way, and it will dry more quickly. Here’s a blog post for your reference as well: www.firstdayofhome.com/diy-bead-garland/

Ohhhh, I was confused because you said think instead of thick. 😄 The trinket trays are about 1/4 inch thick. I’m not sure what vase/mug you’re asking about. Do you mean the candleholder? If you want to make a vase, I would also make it about 1/4 inch thick.
can i use oil paint to air dry clay

Hi Aileen! Yes, you can use oil paint. You may want to seal it first with an acrylic gloss medium before painting or test a small piece. Make sure the piece is completely dry before painting. ❤️
