You use distilled or boiled water. 1: has no real flavor so any minerals or trace elements are gone 2: no dissolved gases

Guests at home would marvel at the presence of an ice roughly resembling a sphere, let alone a perfect one. So yeah, the five dollar one gets the job done for a home bar. The 1000 dollar one follows the law of diminishing returns.

I came up with my own method of clear ice cubes. I cut small holes in the bottom of a latex ice cube tray and place the tray inside a deep tupperware container. Fill up the tray so that both the tupperware container and the ice tray are filled with water. As it freezes, the non-clear ice gets pushed to the bottom inside the tupperware container. Clear ice remains in the tray. A little difficult to separate the tray, but pretty easy with running water and a spoon to whack it with. Perfectly clear ice in cube form for the cost of a $5 ice tray.

Good idea! How deep does the Tupperware container have to be? Have some ice molds at home and might try this. Not sure how deep it has to be for the impurities to sink to the bottom.

It’s amusing all the ways people try to make clear ice. Just put water in a cooler with the top removed and freeze it (not a sub zero) until it is about 50-70% frozen then take out and cut up. Perfect clear every time.

I’ve been playing with this. Being so cold outside in 🇨🇦 right now I’ve just been putting the cooler outside. Works awesome

I did that a few times too. I was covering it with plastic wrap to make sure I wouldn’t get dirt particules and I was able to save space in my freezer for more food 😆

when i started making my clear ice i needed to wait till we needed to get groceries so the freezer was empty. i always felt bad cuz how much space it took up but now i got a dedicated ice freezer and its so much more convenient.

Been pursuing and making clear ice at home for years. If you want to improve the clarity of your ice using a Coleman cooler - keep the temperature of your freezer a tad higher (less cold), and remove it after about 26-30 hours. There will be a thinner layer of ice than what you got in this video but it is usually flawless without any bubbles. If you want bigger blocks of clear ice (for example, using the Tovolo mold as you did), you need a bigger cooler (and a bigger freezer). If you’re looking for spheres, there are many products that use directional freezing with the appropriate molds ranging from $30-$200.

Hi Jean-Felix, im doing it with the molds same way. To avoid the “imperfections” just drill some more holes / 5 to 6 in the lid around the first one. Makes nearly clear ice balls

Great tip! I was actually used to do that on the rigid part of the mold. It actually worked well. But then you're stuck with a mold that can be used only for making clear ice. Call me stupid but I never thought of making the holes on the lid HAHAHA

Awesome!! I always find it more appealing when I can do something smart, a little more pride in the outcome! and There is another advantage to teh $5 mold. It is easier to include a piece of fruit or mint in the mold. The press you need to get lucky with placement.

eBay sells cheaper ice presses. I spent 200 on mine. I wouldn’t want to spend 1000, but I was really happy with the one that I got. And then, of course, they came out with ice presses that have different mold inserts! One day… We make ice all sorts of ways. We use the Coleman cooler and cut a lot of our own, and carve our own spheres. For guests we will break out the ice press. We also have several winter Smith’s molds and they are fantastic!

For home.... As long as it's round, it's perfect. ✊🏽

Hi there. Very interesting. Thanks! I have one of the cheap molds - it makes two balls at once. I have filled it up and just put it in the freezer and it is very hard to get the balls out when done. Does you method with the cooler help the release from the mold? Or any other advice? Thanks!

Wow that is a lot of effort

Do not fill mold using a faucet with an aerator on the end! This is key. The added air will cloud the ball and make the ice weak, and it will be easily fractured. Use a jug of distilled or purified water instead of tap water. Why? Because impurities in tap water also cloud ice, and city tap water often imparts a bad flavor and or odor in ice, and then your drink. Some think boiling distilled water is the way to go. But how is distilled water made? By capturing the steam from boiled water and cooling it... AKA distillation. So just keep a jug of store bought distilled water in the fridge. Air will leave the water as it cools, and no new air will be added while stored. To avoid aeration when filling molds, pre-wet inner surfaces, and fill slowly. The above is all simple and near effortless and will produce perfectly acceptable ice balls for home use.

You're not on to anything. The air bubbles are less dense than the water, so they float to the top and escape. They don't stay in the water.

Ice press is must perfect, money can tell in this case.

Definitely sure there's not $995 worth of imperfections in that second ice sphere. The ice press is just awesome to watch though.

Yeah, will totally be worth it. Plus you can get some clear ice cubes or crushed ice from the excess ice. And as the ultimate extra I can also justify getting some good bottles for the bar because of saving so much money... 😉

Great tip, but it's not really $5 if you add in the cost of the cooler, the ice pick, and other items you might not have that you'd need to make this ice

Very cool man. Great job and another cool vid 👏... I bought a directional ice ball mould that produces 2x great balls of ice over 6.3cmØ diameter at a time. The Coleman is a great bargain and small enough to go in most freezers - and you can also produce blocks and spheres at the same time, but I’ll send you the link of the mould I bought, should you want to check it out anyway 👍

I never knew I wanted ice balls till I watched this video

These is a method of removing air from water by boiling it multiple times to make clear ice. I think it will give somewhat close results.

How about just sticking the mold into an Insulated cup? The ones that keep your coffee warm or for camping? Fill it up with water and float the mold on top, should be the same result while taking up a lot less space in the freezer.

That would work 100% I used the large cooler cause I wanted to make some had cut pieces of clear ice for the press too but if space is an issue... 100% go with your idea

I've found you can make better clear ice in that exact Coleman by pulling it out of the freezer long before the whole thing is frozen - it takes my freezer about 22 hours to freeze 1/2 - 2/3rds of the block and what that means is any air in the space has been pushed out of the ice and is all in the remaining frozen water. If I leave it in for as along as 2 days, once all the water freezes, you get lots more bubbles and imperfections creeping back into the layer of ice at the top. You get less ice, but it's better quality. Whether this affects balls I don't know as I found the silicone ice moulds I've tried tended to flavour the ice badly - but I'd bet pulling it out sooner might make better looking $5 balls.

There is something inherently wrong with the icebox method. There’s so much waste. I used to do it all the time but I’ve just switched back to the silicone moulds that are cloudy af. The only thing clear about my drinking these days is my conscience

Interesting you say that. My first video about clear ice was called "how to make sustainable clear ice" and I was telling how I like to freeze the cooler all the way through in order to keep the clear ice for serving and the scrap ice to shake and stir. Funny enough, a lot of people called it BS. I still think it's the best way. Cheers to your ecological concerns!

Here's how I make clear ice I actually just use a water bottle Wrap it with cardboard and freeze it slowly When ice freezes too fast air bubbles get trapped inside Wrapping it with cardboard slows the freezing process down so the air has time to escape before it freezes No it is not a perfect spear but it is clear ice Simply cut the water bottle away chop off the amount you need done

I use a smaller singular ice ball mold and I put it so the bottom is inside a metal insulated tumbler full of water (mold hole side down) in the freezer - it works well and it is really easy to get out.

@@TrufflesOnTheRocks ok, I use Shefio molds which have a tab on either side which let's them sit on the rim of the tumbler. The tumbler itself is an old Starbucks 16 oz it is not even that amazing. I also wrap a tea towel around the tumbler for added insulation. I could send you a picture. It works best if I catch it just as the iceball is frozen and the ice starts down into the tumbler.

So putting the ice mold upside down in the cooler is what makes it clear? I have those exact same ice molds ($5) and my ice always comes out cracked and cloudy.

it does because of the directional freezing due to the insulation of the cooler. You need both items to make it work ;) Cheers!

I have a couple questions. What would happen if there was water in the top of the mold? Would it be that because the silicone is in between the two layers of water that that could make the difference? (If the $5 mold must be submerged in the cooler, isn’t it then now no longer a $5 option 🤔) And, what if you lived in Win’ter’peg, could it be possible to put the cooler outside and get the same results? Or would the cooler Need to be in a closed environment? (that Winnipeg question literally just came to me now 😆)

Hey mate, I'll try to answer all them. If water gets in the upper part the mold will sink down. Since the clear ice is on top, you will not get a clear sphere. The tittle is not 5$ ice sphere but 5$ ice mold vs 1000$ ice press. Both techniques require the cooler and all the other itmes to make clear ice so that why I didn't include that in my price comparison. You can place your cooler outside to make ice if temperature is cold enough. That said, when I tried it (I'm in Quebec city and it's probably as if not colder than Winnipeg) and sometimes, because it's colder at night then during the day, it makes bad result. But it still work. Let me know if you need more info. Cheers!

Let them 'temper' in room temperature for a while so they are more acclimatised to not being in the freezer. Then when you add liquid they should be less prone to shatters and cracks.

“Can I have ice please?” Sure just give me a few hours…

It’s gonna melt either way so I really don’t give a damn if it’s a clear ball of ice or a foggy one.

It's a shame commercial ice makers don't sell clear cubes retail. I know in some cities you can get them but not in mine. For special occasions I would pay $1 per large clear cube. Buy 2 dozen.

If the press is room temperature, it should take more then 30sec. If you make more than one in a row, you will need to heat it with hot water after 2-3 ice cubes

I find those molds cause the ice to have an “odour” from the silicone. Even after cleaning the molds - still has an odour. I have read that it’s possibly from the soap. Anyone know how to remove that smell in silicone. Tried the “oven trick”, but that still resulted in having a silicone odour on the ice and in my drinks.

I think this is completely false. Ice will dilute the spirit, lowering the ABV will result in a smoother liquid where alcohol is less present and it will open up the other flavours. If you don't like it that way it's a thing and you are totally right to prefer yours neat. As a matter of fact I'm a big advocate of "the best way is the way you like it" but regardless of the preferences, it sure ain't just a decoration. It really serves a purpose.

it's a method of slow freezing that makes clearer ice by freezing from the top downwards, instead of all sides. What that does is push air and impurities downward too meaning the ice is super-clear without bubbles. The thermos has insulated walls which means the ice is only cooled from the exposed top area, which allows all this magic to happen. (I make all my ice this way)

My fridge is too small for this...

There are ice presses available that are nowhere near that $1000 price tag

I bought a silicone mold at the dollar general store...it makes 4 spheres at once. Costed 5 dollars. Clear ice or not clear ice...still tastes exactly the same. Lol even if I was a billionare... no way in hell I would buy a 1000 dollar ice press. I would still use my 5 dollar mold.
