You know, I never even had broccoli salad before...but this salad is one I will definitely be making. Will adding just 1/4 cup sugar change the flavor?

What?! Oh yes, you need to try it! Yes, the sugar really does balance things a bit better so you have that salty-sweet thing going on. But you could get away reducing it by half.

I would substitute mandarin oranges/clementines (cut in halves or thirds) for the cranberries...since it's a summer salad. A little zest from the oranges or lemon, with the bacon garnish would brighten up the presentation, as well. Tossing with a couple of forks will help keep the ingredients intact and not over-mixed.

I use raw local honey instead of sugar and lemon zest in the dressing, and add a chopped apple (put the lemon juice over the apple).
