► About The Game...
In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.
The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough-there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.
Banished has no skill trees. Any structure can be built at any time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money. Instead, your hard-earned resources can be bartered away with the arrival of trade vessels. These merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet; however, their lengthy trade route comes with the risk of bringing illnesses from abroad.
There are twenty different occupations that the people in the city can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to mining, teaching, and healing. No single strategy will succeed for every town. Some resources may be more scarce from one map to the next. The player can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry for rock, but all these choices require setting aside space into which you cannot expand.
The success or failure of a town depends on the appropriate management of risks and resources.

You need a storage barn up in your mining bit so that the blacksmith doesnt have to go all the way into town to drop off the tools

@@wolfane64616 After it is built he assigns venders.
You should put stock piles near the large areas you’ve designated to clear. The laborers are going and cutting like two trees and then carrying it all the way back to town. They can get so much more done when they don’t have to travel to storage

YES! This is an important tip.
I follow what Honeywell came up with and build a school first, right at the beginning. An educated labourer has so many benefits. It takes some juggling but if successful brings so many benefits.

Wow. I always build one for the 26ish kid. Just having some basic morons playing with food
A school is one of the first things I build after I've stabilised food and firewood. I see it as the school is cheaper the longer it's around and the children will become labourers at 16 instead of 10, so there will be a shortfall of new labourers in the short term, thus I want it built before anyone does.
This is an absolute pleasure to watch.
I read somewhere that the best way to optimize logging is to have two foresters: one focused on logging and one focused on planting. Can't say if it works though, never tried it.
@ConflictNerd

I've read that on a few different forums, too. Apparently having two buildings either next to each other or facing each other, one set to cutting and one to planting, and it works well. Some people ran the numbers though, and it only provides anywhere from 100 - 150 extra logs per year. That's not awful, but I also don't think it'd be worth spending another four workers on.
@annekekramer3835

@@ConflictNerdI think they mean that instead of two foresters both set to planting and cutting. So you don't waste 4 extra workers, as you either have two foresters set to both actions (2 x (2 planting, 2 cutting) = 8 workers, or set one to cutting (4 workers) and one to planting (4 workers).

You can have forresters grow trees of which laborors can clear cut when needed for the supply. I imagine a clear cut, even partial clear cut, may disrupt gatherers, herbalists, and possibly also hunters in the area though. But I wouldn't know about any of that for sure.

at the beginning when a lot of wood is needed for building and burning, if you manually tell the laborers to go cut wood , which is also needed to clear up land for development, you can keep up with the wood needs. later on, as you need to build less buildings, your several forester buildings can keep the village going, maybe with the occasional clear-cutting request to help out.
Please do not forget that once you have the Town Hall you can see production graphs that will give you a better idea of how your production is going and how much you may end up needing
Focus on food, forest, and firewood. Build a trader and export excess so you can import stone and iron. Iron mines and quarries take up a lot of workers, they are often killed easily, and once a quarry exhausts it's resouces, the land is no longer usable.
been watching you since 2017 and i have to say i am so happy to see you bring banished back lol
Such a good episode I really like that you do research and try to get maximum efficiency!! please keep with this series I love it!
I think this is my first time commenting on one of your vids. I ended up here thanks to software inc. But tbh I just want to say ty. I bought banished years ago and never learnt it. This series given me desire to get back into it and properly learn it and honestly I'm living it. Keep up the awesome content
trading is the way my man, be manufacture village lol. buy raw material sell tools and high clothes
The food barn is good to have in each cluster so that people can get food and things from it. It is also good to have markets everywhere and not overlap coverage area. My town is up to close to 300 people now. i generally put 8 houses, the hunter, the gatherer, the herbalist and forester, as well as the storage barn and a wood cutter and 2 stockpiles in each cluster. So far it works great. Just be careful about not having a backup to produce food if you try to move farms. Edit: Also, anly put 1 hunter in each area, otherwise your people will overhunt the animals.
7x7 farms one farmer can cultivate 100%, stone houses reduce firewood consumption.
Enjoyed the trivium reference! Might need to swap the tailor to using wool - running low on clothes!
Tell a girl you have the hair of Matt Heafy and the body of Rob McElhenny but not which version of either one, lifehack
I like your Industrial area! Really enjoying this play through.
you have no idea that this videos makes me fall asleep and rewatch it if i'm not sleepy haha
love this, wish you did 2 episodes a day tbh!
Just saw you randomly on my front page a few hours ago and since I love (and miss) Banished, I had to click, stuck around because I really enjoy your voice and commentary. And now you're talking about your emo phase and as I just turned 30 myself, I just HAD to subscribe. Keep it going, man! haha
Good episode. Three suggestions I have that may be of some use. 1 would be for the wood cutter for firewood has three chopping stumps so you can have 3 workers at each stump producing fire wood 2 having 2 blacksmiths early game 1 for iron tools the other for steel that way the villagers pick up steel first then iron and you can trade the iron for stuff as needed 3 when villagers start dying off they sometimes leave 1 person in a house. If it's wooden you vcan upgrade to stone and once built it will have a full family both working and having kids so there doesn't necessarily need constant house expansion early on.

good tips but iron is a more valuable resource for crafting than wood is. wood is plentiful and renewable. keep the iron and trade firewood or even wood logs if you don't have enough firewood yet, but there's no reason to be perpetually low on firewood if you've decided your town will use it for trading
27:48 finding out youre a metalhead made my fucking day… you said matt tuck and my eyes went 👀👀👀👀👀 then you said matt heafy and my face went 😱😱😱
Two forester areas is enough to sustain a town twice as big as you currently have, once one area is fully grown, srt your labourers to clear cut the entire area to give you a nice boost in logs! All the while you still have the pther area to keep you going until the area you have cleared has grown, at that point clear that area, rinse and repeat and youll be swimming in logs!
I have found that having a few vendors helps as they will move stock from all the stocks and put them in the marketplace. The vendors also keep all the houses stocked with food. You still need laborers to pick up stones and stuff and move construction materials to new constructions. Having more farmers will help the fields grow faster and a faster harvest. Less loss to winter and better yields.
"concerned" and "not enough", that sounds like a typical Banished gameplay alright
I can't tell which one I enjoy more, the gameplay or your commentary. 😂
love this series, as someone who struggles to play Banished (because the UI is so tiny and my eyesight is very poor. Having said that, your school placement tilts me because it's not snug against the road corner and therefore more central lol
decided to get back into banished myself because of this series, i do like my mods so will be starting with a number though
Fully addicted to this series
oh yes some BANISHED Vanilla, still have a few achivemds to do. Its a Great Game!
I only build one quarry and maybe a couple of mines at best. The key to success is to brew booze and trade it for iron, coal and stone.
Keep them coming Dylan! :D
you can actually manually select for your laborers to cut wood. that will help with the massive need for wood when you're building stuff as well as needing it to chop wood for burning in the homes.
These vids inspired me to try banished again only for everyone to starve on year 2 lmao

some players can start food production by making farms in year 1. most can't. the recommendation for early start is ignore farms and orchards and even fishing docks. make hunters and gatherers. you can feed several hundred people just from hunting and gathering, as long as you build in clusters where each hunter and each gatherer doesn't intersect with each other's same building as your population grows and you have more available resources to work and build then you can add in farms, docks, and orchards

@@pershop4950 I'll try this next time I play, thanks!
This is pretty late but the trick to distributing in this game is to put a market in the center and then any offshoots (forestry outposts or farms) should have a storage barn close by within the circle of the market. Once you expand far enough you put new markets down which touch a storage barn that is inside the original market. This will make all your housing areas connected.
its really making me want to play this again, love it!
I like to make it so in the farm fields, farmers don’t carry the produce. I make only the laborers do it. That way all food is in baskets before the frost

I was happy earlier when he clicked on her and we saw she hadn't died off screen. Glad to know she followed her dreams of being a forester. 😢
I need like an hour or two long episode of him playing banished
Might not be a bad idea to switch both mines over to iron until you can catch up on iron and ignore steel tools for the time being and just stick with iron tools, especially since you still have all those buildings still being built up by the mines.
Next time probably if you start a big „clearing project“ start with the stockpiles, it helps the laborer tu run a bit less. Now they running to,pick up the resources in the village to bild blacksmith, houses… and other laborers bringing the logs and stone into the village…

okay… Stockpile came in at 15:30 😅
Damn I got here quick! I guess I was really needing to relive my early gaming days.
you need to be temporary stockpiles in your work areas so your laborers are not wasting time carrying things across the map
A usefull thing if you want to know where things ovelap, is you can PIN a structures overview, to see where its radius extends to.
This game has been on my wish-list for awhile, looks like im buying it!
26:04 I just realized something VERY... "interesting" about this area, thankfully this is a game so it doesn't matter!!!
not sure if you get to it. but you can ask trader boats for specific goods, but they charge a little more for it. good way to get seeds when u really need them
I wonder if Dylan's happy thoughts about children being around will survive when it happens in his Sims gameplay?
It's a pity you can't dig and join the quarry to the river for extra fish once it's done.
Yess!
also increasing the number of farmers per field will increase the yield of your fields
You made me download this game again, I hope youre happy 😠🤣
The pillow talk 😭😭😭💀
This just occurred to me halfway through the video, and i'm sure it will be hard to achieve with the current layout, but I think some roads between the farms and orchards is needed - not just to make "through-roads" for transport reasons, but also if i'm not mistaken isn't there a food blight mechanic? Separating the farming fields and alternating the crops should protect against that. Perhaps i'm getting confused with another game though...
If I need a lot of wood I want my foresters to only plant and then I clear out the whole forest manually.
The villagers switch professions, they select the closet job to the family home. If no jobs are local they become labourers… try to get spare houses all over or your labour force could be miles away from where you need them
i wish they'd add better roas into the game. like instead of straight lines and grids, you can actually make it feel more medieval with curving and stuff. Or do like foundation did, and allow paths to form how workers move.
Love james! Just saw Metallica in Dallas !
Me (totally not getting invested in the series): No don't knock over that tree, it is in a nice place aesthetically
👍👍
Maybe I don't understand how the game calculates the "work" done by people at the jobs, but why do you keep building more buildings instead of putting more people to work in the existing places? For example adding more wood cutting buildings instead of just putting another to work at the existing buildings? Also complaining about not having food, and repeatedly losing 1/3 of every harvest because the single farmer doesn't have the ability to harvest even the ~70% they managed to grow. By consolidating more workers into fewer places you avoid these problems and also reduce the distance more workers have to travel without having to build more houses. If I'm not understanding how the game calculates work please let me know. Found the channel through this series and am thoroughly enjoying, just thought I'd give my input on trying to keep the settlement alive.
Builds 5 bridges. Wonders where the wood went...
Gday, after the harvest, I bring the number of farmers to zero. Then at sowing(spring) I increase the number of farmers to the required amount. Gives a short boost to the number of laborers.
making me wanna play this game again.
On the traders that come, you can press the order tab and request various seeds fyi
fisherman 7/28 can add more workers?
Wooden houses use more wood/firewood
Is this game made by the same people behind settlement survival

No. It's a one-man show (Shining Rock Studio). The creator had about 20 years of experience in the industry working on a bunch of games, then went solo and made Banished. It was hugely successful. He's been working on another game for the last 6 or 7 years (basically an even better version of Banished) but went quiet a year or two ago so no idea if it's still happening. I really want to see what else the developer comes up with
RIP Arma. Hope she/he got to drink at least one cup of booze.

Dude, the quarry is a pain in the ass. overproduce food and trade it for stone with merchants instead!
When are we getting the next episode. It’s been a month now
Yay :D
Don't take it personal but it's a little bit infuriating how you ignore the missing iron for YEARS of gameplay, build two more blacksmiths who got nothing to work with, prioritize chopping trees while wood isn't a problem, waste ressources on buying tools and just watch more and more people running around without tools, which is especially bitter in the much needed iron mine - but otherwise love your series, please keep on going :)
Placing the same houses in a row doesn't look good
installing mods doesn't necessarily means cheating. some of the good structures are on the mods. the version you are playing doesn't penalize living near an industrial structure/ mine 🤷♂️
I see you next time.
if it doesn't change the complete game mechanics is it cheating ?

i dont know if the base rate changes in colonial chapter mod for forest lodges but i they can take 4 jobs lower it to 1 and they operate at peak if you have 4 guys working one lodge they chop the trees before they fully mature 1 worker should be about 80 logs per season for uneducated 110-120 for educated
I've bought a new gaming laptop last week because my old one could't handle Diablo IV quite right.
