How To Make Band Saw Wheels from Plywood
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The wheels are made from two layers of 1/2" Baltic birch plywood, plus hubs for the lower drive shaft and upper bearings. Plywood has durability and strength but the varying density makes it more difficult to balance. A better choice would be particle board, but I didn't have any on hand and I didn't want to buy a full sheet just for this.
I sized the wheels so that when the tires are put on the total diameter will be 12"

There are regular woodworkers and there is John. He is on a whole different level. Absolutely incredible!
Looks great, John. Thanks for keeping the quality content coming!
"Which is Kinda' of Different for a Homemade", Ah, a Heisz Masterpiece best described. Even if plans are never provided the videos are such high quality, One should be able to be constructed. My best Sunday morning Maker watch.
Your projects and skills have always been way beyond many KZread woodworkers. This bandsaw it's already shaping up to be amazing
Love the bandsaw, no reason why it should not become a hit. ( In the woodworkers or diy communion). 👍 Specialy the tension is unique for a homemade one.
Can't wait for the next part in the series, John! As always, great quality content! I really enjoy all of your build series, that for me is what's worth watching here on youtube.
Well, this video really flew by... I'm enjoying this.
Once again, simple yet very effective solutions which are transferable to many other projects. Thanks for letting your mind run and sharing with us.
I know you stated on your other channel that you were still undecided about selling the plans for this on your website. I really hope you eventually do. As much as I like the Wandel bandsaw, the required equipment needed to build it is a bit more than many have. I like that yours can be built by someone who has a very basic setup. It is almost like a "step 2" project, after a table saw, that will launch you into building all of the other projects. P.S. I love the aesthetic you've created lately. The tools are as beautiful as they are functional.
I really enjoy your problem-solving, it is always outside the box, from your clamps to this bandsaw you can build outstanding tools by thinking about how wood work as a whole. Well done John.
Very good job Mr. Heisz. Today it is not profitable to build one of those saws, unless you have remnants from another project. Only, (to start with something), the price of wood is through the roof. In any case, his work method is highly professional and detailed. I like it a lot.
I go into my wood shop now and I am ...ashamed, even my tools feel ashamed. The amazing skill and the quality of the tools he has built is amazing. Even my wood looks down on me now.
Looks awesome John! Also ROBERTSON SCREWS! Finally someone who appreciates robbies
John, As always, this is another example of your amazing work!! Thank you!
I'm really enjoying this series.
Awesome as usual, John! I'll definitely get those plans whenever they come out! This bandsaw is the right size for my small garage shop and would be an upgrade from my cheap and rather tiny band saw
Clever and simple way to make the two wheels co-planar! 🙂
Amazingly skilled woodworker!
This is awesome. Love the elegant simplicity, especially in the joinery
Nice pace and clear instructions. Thanks John!
That was wheelie neat.
As always, great work John. Looking forward to the rest of the series
The saw is coming along really nicely John
Absolutely brilliant project John. 👏👏👏👏👏
I enjoyed this video.
Really enjoy seeing the process. Thanks.
John, I’d love to see you Making one low angle jack plane with adjustable mouth.
Love your work John!
Coming along nicely!
That’s another level congratulations 👍
Great work as always!
Damnit, John, I've been dreaming of making this episode for years, but wouldn't dare attract attention of mighty Mattias in this way! :)
Thank you for the detail, I'm gonna make this in future.
This is fantastic thanks John
Awesome Engineering as Usual, John.
Awesome stuff John! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
John, richtig gute Arbeit bin begeistert.
It very nice and unique, great job my friend!
Great video, super impressed with your skill and knowledge. Just recently discovered your channel, and man am I glad I did. You have a great, comfortable voice to tell what youre doing, the length of your videos are perfect, also you make a lot of really interesting things. Keep it up 👍
Tut tut tut, you might’ve polished up that old bearing 😉 Absolutely great job 👌
Wow that's brilliant
Maestro John good evening from italy perfect work i want replay your table saw meccanism
شكرا عملك رائع
John, crazy cool stuff man!
Parabéns ficou muito boa essa serra fita 👏👏👏👏
Unbelievable! 🙌
At meat lockers they use band saws to break down the beef carcasses into manageable pieces. It was my job to clean all the utensils, so I know how to take a band saw apart and put it back together. Never seen one made from scratch like this before though.
I like it !!!
This guy is good!
Great idea love it I'll let ya know how mine turns out .
That was pretty neat stuff. Sometimes the hard way is the best.(okay, not the best but we do it anyway)
Thank you very much very nice ❤️
Love this build. You still need to work with Andy on finding a way of putting 2 different blades on one saw so you don't have to switch blades every time...
you're a genius
Really fantastic work, John! Well done! 😃 How high of a board is it going to be able to resaw? Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
good job
Love it 🤔👍🍿
👍, nice!
I think I am going to make a special playlist of only this build so I can watch it over and over for a tutorial so I can build my own .....
انت دائما رائع جدااااا تحياتي لك في انتظار المزيد
Did I see correctly? The edge of the wheels holding the blade is convex and not concave? Other than my confusion, it looks great.
I watched your video!
Muy bueno
Vety Nice Job !!! Would you be so kind as to mention the coste/investment of you r reélisation please ?!
Hi John, great vid as always.. Really hope you put out plans for this once complete.. at the moment it's a toss up between yours and Matthais' designs to replace the 500 Dollar P.O.S. thing I mistakenly purchased a couple of years ago from my local hardware store. (for those in Australia, avoid, at all costs, the Full Boar brand bandsaw, it's utter shjite!)

Nice. I was wondering though, I noticed you balanced the wheels then did a bunch of stuff to them. Would all those changes that not affect the balance of the wheels or is it insignificant?
That's wicked John.. I love it man. One of these days I'm gonna have to build one of those.. if you where to sell that Bandsaw on a store shelf. What size Bandsaw what you say that it is? I didn't know if you made it to be a specific size or not? Lol I should have just did that to begin with.. great work as usual John. Keep up the great work. And the awesome videos my friend..
John I was wondering If you had filed flats under the stop collar set screws on your axles to help keep them from slipping and insuring a sold grip on your axles?
Great build! Does anyone know which construction adhesive he used?
This saw is elegant. Matthias saws are more brute force
Hello John, This Saw looks amazing, and Id love to get Plans for it, and your Tablesaw. Are there plans for those available? I cannot find them on your Website
And how does Mr. Heisz keep his fanbase so attached? Polyurethane construction adhesive.
Where can we source saw blades for such, and what specks are neede?
This looks awesome John!! I have one question, is it possible to make a band saw with four smaller wheels, like a belt grinder? I have a small, no a tiny shop and I would like to have a bandsaw but a regular one won't fit. Is that possible to make?
@ProDMiner

They have some really small band saws at menards I seen the other day, idk what you would use it for. But they are so little
BTW, I wonder if those industrial sewing machine DC motors with speed controller would work fine for this application. I've seen people using them on benchtop drill presses replacing the original weaker (1/3 to 1/2 HP) motors and those things seem to have plenty of torque, at least for drill press usage.
👍👍👍
So after balancing the wheels by drilling holes and or adding screws, did you not then make more holes to attach that second idea to align the wheels?
@catexis

Most of the material from that hole will have compressed into the wood. A tiny portion would have come out. You’re right, but I reckon the impact would’ve been within his margin of error for balancing it anyway.
Hi John I have watched so many of your videos & you clearly swear by polyurethane construction adhesive, can you please recommend a product to use that they sell in the UK.
Регулировка соосности колес почти прицизионная 😮😂
Is there any reason this can’t be a larger bandsaw?
Its gonna be sweet John. Unrelated question. You use a lot of PL, how do you keep the tube from drying out after you open it? I often wish they made it in smaller squeeze tubes because I end up with a lot of half tubes that dry out before I can use.it again. Thanks for the video.

I don't know how John does it, but I'll tell you how I do it. I get a big drywall screw, the coarsest I can find, and push it into the end of the tube. Then I take several layers of plastic bag and put that over the screw and the cut end of the tube, and wrap that all well with electrical tape, to make the most airtight seal possible. But undoubtably, when reopening it, there will have been some air leakage and there is a small plug of dried PL at the end, so I grab the drywall screw with a pair of vise-grips and just yank it out. Most of the time that will pull out the entire plug, but if not, I saw the head off another long coarse drywall screw, chuck it up in my drill, and use that as a sort of spinning reamer to pull the remaining chunks of dried glue out of the passageway. 99% of the time, that solves it.

@@jimthesoundman8641 thanks Jim. I've tried the screw method before with tape but don't know if I used plastic with it. Normally I just let it dry into a plug then just cut the tip lower. Its not ideal because you get a gigantic opening. It also sometimes dries the whole thing out depending on how much is left. I've also tried those store bought plugs... they don't work. We can put a man on the moon but can't make a resealable caulking tube : ) Thanks for the idea
John, in the description, about the Plywood Wheels, you say: A better choice would be particle board... Do you have any thoughts on MDF, or Masonite?

I made the wheels on my band saw mill from MDF.

@@JohnHeisz yes, I forgot.
Honest question: why does a crowned wheel help the blade track? It seems counter-intuitive to the brain in my thick skull.
How is this different from Matthias' Design?
Did you consider bicycle wheel instead?
Matthias will accept this as a challenge. Kudos!
Thanks for sharing those tips and the make! Matthias Wandel did made more than one bandsaw!
How much of that tire color is for viewer eye candy lol. I know you talked about using official tires for this build, but still lol.

First balance. Second order balance is where it’s at… just saying…
