No. A fossilized fashioned.
I don't know guys I think they could've added a few more steps.
As a Louisvillian I have pulled up a million old fashioned tutorials for out of state friends. Yours is the only one I've found that's correct! Well done!
The old fashioned is one of the most simplistic cocktails going. This was made a lot more difficult then needed lol

From Harry Johnson's Bartenders guide. Published in 1882. “OLD FASHIONED WHISKEY COCKTAIL. Take a whiskey tumbler, and put into it: 1/4 of a teaspoonful of sugar; 2 small lumps of ice; 2 or 3 dashes of bitters (Boker's genuine only); 1 or 2 dashes of curacoa or absinthe if required; 1 wine glass of whiskey; Stir up well with a spoon until the ingredients are well mixed, squeeze a piece of lemon peel on top, and serve, in the same glass.” Excerpt From: Harry Johnson, “Harry Johnson's Bartenders' Manual.”

You can make a better tasting old fashioned that's an actual old fashioned... with dem syrup(lets just skip the muddling and get right to what we want with better consistency, bitters of your choice... 2oz of bourbon ice stir, drop it over a big rock ice... and that will take you 45 seconds and taste better than whatever this monstrosity. And the 5 dollar tip you give this guy.. i can make for 2 different customers with 2 different hands in 3/4ths the time.
I usually like to put at least 5-6 dashes of bitters directly into the glass, it's the combination of the angostura, bourbon and the flavor or orange that really makes a good old fashioned, doesn't even need ice cubes though it only makes the drink very watery after a few minutes and I certainly don't need any cherries or other fruits, orange peel is enough.
Dude... that's gonna be one STRONG Old Fashioned, I say this as a Marine vet. Sheesh!!!
@ericktellez7632
2 жыл бұрын
No kidding, you wont even taste the sugar and bitters after almost 5 oz of whiskey
You can make an Old Fashioned 50 different ways using any assortment of sugar, bitters, fruit, and Whiskey. Its one of those things that people will always have an opinion about. Muddle the orange, don't muddle, add cherry, no cherry, 7 dashes of bitters, two dashes, Bourbon, Rye, simple, use a sugar cube, you're stirring too long, etc, etc.
LMAO! stir and stir like crazy love this guy
That dude sure can stir FAST!!!...lol
Agreed with everyone here about the cherry and cherry syrup, it is optional so feel free to add or omit to taste. Personally I like an original old fashioned sans cherry, but it's a nice modern twist to a classic. Also the napkin is just to catch excess bitters and to prevent splashing; common practice in trendy bars, but again optional.
sir what you add on sugar cube in second step??
I remember trying to make an old fashioned. I was stirring it from old fashion to super old fashion. The customer was just like, just give to me🤣🤣🤣
I've been thinking about adding cherry to mine, thanks for the recipe, I'll be trying yours next time I make old fashioneds.
After he tasted it the first time, did he say the word garbage? That's what I heard. This guy is really something!

@Read The thing I couldn't understand, is when he pointed out the Bourbon and announced it, it didn't sound like he said Bourbon... In fact, I still don't know what he called it. 🤔
I could've made that in way fewer steps. I made one with orange bitters along with the Angostura and left out the orange peel. Still tasted amazing.
i had one be for at work first time the other day so goood
Wow. Insightful. I love it when people question you/object to your opinion/say you're 'wrong' and yet completely fail to give any reason or opinion or argument of their own. I've been told in the past that I shouldn't rise to trolls, though.
And finally, after a week, you get your drink 😆
thank you

+melnyc belo No, I mean how at 0:35 in the video he puts a napkin on top of the glass, places the sugar cube on top of the napkin on top of the glass, dashes the bitters on the cube sitting on top of the napkin, and then proceeds to drop the sugar cube into the glass. This is a waste of a napkin, bitters, and time. You're supposed to put the sugar cube directly into the glass and dash the bitters on top and then muddle with about a teaspoon of water (not god damn cherry syrup for crying out loud). This is honestly one of the worst instructional videos on how to make an Old Fashioned I've ever seen from top to bottom.
@KingColliwog

+Colin Abele I think the point is to have exactly as much bitter as the sugar cube will soak and catch the extra in the napkin. Also it's to look like you're super knowledgeable and fancy cause you did a fancy trick The cherry juice is probably ok with that much bourbon. Many people will muddle a cherry in their old fashioned so it's similar. Still agree with you that this is a terrible old fashioned

Woodford Reserve is a nice Bourbon. I like Maker's Mark, it works well in the Old Fashioned.
This reminds me of a time I ordered an old-fashioned in London. They aren’t really big into cocktails in the UK, most pubs had standards like espresso martinis, Negronis, etc. But I found a place that had an old-fashioned on the menu. They made it right in front of me, and... They started with a sugar cube on a napkin, like here, and then they dashed it with the bitters. Then they let it drip into the glass, removed the cube completely, poured in a shot or two of whiskey, and then filled it up with ice. No garnish. Nothing. It was whiskey flavored water with a hint of bitters and sugar.

um... are you ok? you have to smash the cube anyways, you know you don't have to soak the cube all the way right? is not necessary. His reason of adding in the napkin is clearly to be tacky. That just pure ignorant as same to what you're saying right now.
@viciouswolf1111
8 жыл бұрын
Get a grip son, and soaking it is exactly what you're doing, you ant to make a bitter sweet paste. I use more bitters, he has tried the napkin thing before, has realised that is what works for him, that the napkin gives him the amount of bitter he wants, and he has stuck with it. I can't stand people getting so damn uppity about an Old Fashioned cocktail. It is the one drink where personal experimentation is actually encouraged, yet people still think they have the right to tell others that the way they make an Old Fashioned is wrong. There is no wrong in this drink (within reason of course, you can't add coke etc.), just stop being so uptight and go chill for once.
Thank God...someone will some cocktail sophistication. This was the exact recipe i was using for a long time, but I've found two tweaks that have been fantastic... 1.) replace regan's with angostura orange (awesome bitters) and 2.) use a lemon peel as a zest instead of the orange... I like the angostura orange because it tastes more like orange flavor from the zest rather than the pulp and the lemon is great on the nose. Let me know what you think!
At two shots I thought perfect. 3...I better not be driving home for the next hour or so.
Only need one drink from this guy
Orange bitters and orange peel before dinner Dark Walnut bitters and Bourbon cherry's after dinner. love me a good old fashioned.
it's not about the spirit, it's about the ice. If all you were doing was adding whisky, sugar and bitters then it shouldn't change - but you're checking for the dilution, which it what gives the drink its balance. The effects of ice will change depending on room temp, size of ice, all kinds of things. That's why you need to taste it.
See a lot of complaining and yes if you are going to work in a cocktailbar you should probably learn from another source. But if you are in a hurry and only are making one for yourself this works fine if you are just getting started mixing cocktails. This is basics and one way of doing it. Works if you just wanna get your drink on by your lonesome and hopefully gets you in to learning better ways of making an old fashioned.
Where are you tending bar? I’m on my way to order a “3 shots of bourbon” old fashioned!!!
yeah this is just . . just no. he did way more work than needed. and yeah no if you are here and really want to make an old fashioned, go back to the search results and try again.

@Daniel Warren : Wrong! A _standard shot_ is 45 cc, not 25, no matter what country you are in. In most recipes, this 45 cc is also the amount of 80° distilled spirit (18 cc or 0.6 oz of pure Ethanol) in a standard serving. A little less, 30-40 cc, when there are liqueurs, wines, apertifs or other alcohols in the mix. For example, your basic Margarita will have 38 cc of tequila and 15 cc of 40° orange liqueur, bringing the net Ethanol content to 18.5 ml. 🍹 ~🌹~ .
Great video. Yummy

The Bourbon is Woodford Reserve! It's the only pot-distilled (using a tradition copper still) bourbon!
The bourbon he used was Woodford Reserve... my favorite.
This is the Classic, Wisconsin dinner drink. Most here drink it with brandy though. Get your bitters from Bittercube cuz they are way better than Angustura and drink however you like, straight, sweet, sour, press, the drink can be made tons of different ways and almost all are delicious
to check if it the balance of ingredients are perfect. A good bartender does that usually. There is mor than sugar here. it is bitters and cherry too. For a mixologist this is important stuff to have the right balance. if not we add more of what is needed
this bartender very very good , we want more video with this bartender
If this establishment isn't charging about $35 bucks for this drink, this bar is loosing serious cash....

The first time I saw this drink was in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love and didn't have that much ice cubes in it watering down the alcohol.
B+ liked the touch of cherry juice. I have no idea what soaking the napkin in the beginning was all about. Lastly I'm going to have to assume that was three ounces of Bourbon which makes it a kick ass old fashion.

The napkin was often used to 'soak' the excess bitters so that only the amount that can fit in the sugar cube would go in the drink! Nowadays people prefer more complexity of flavour so we see the napkin less and less!
That’s a great diluted old fashion “sarcasm”

To those so heavily disliking the video, the Old Fashioned has no strict rules. Everyone has their own perfect Old Fashioned. Try using a good quality blended Scotch instead of bourbon sometime, but make sure it has a high grain component, the drink needs the sweetness I'd say. #DoItYourOwnWay
@facundocorradini
8 жыл бұрын
yeah. Make it with whatever spirit you like (an old fashioned doesn't even necessarily has to be whisky; it refers to the old way of making cocktails: *spirit + sugar + bitters*, before the next generation came in with the vermouths and such) But 4 1/2 oz of booze? and that soaking the cube with bitters... way to have your bitters wasted on the napkin, and the sugar undissolved. And what's with the 3 - step dilution? that's gonna make the first cubes tiny as fuck and dilute the drink to sheer nothingness in less than 1 minute. Seriously. An old fashioned is not complicated. Get whatever spirit you fancy, add 2oz over some cubes, 3 or 4 dashes of bitters, a spoon of simple syrup, and stir. Perhaps some decent *real* maraschino cherry for garnish, and/or a twist of whatever citric you prefer. This video is so ridiculous I can't even tell if it's a parody or not.

A Gin old Fashioned is lovely. I just took my usual recipe, and changed the peel. Brown sugar, 3 dashes of bitters, crushed up, half the gin, ice, stir repeat. Lemon rind squeezed over and rubbed around the glass and left there. There it is. Need a saltier more flavoursome gin though. Like a Scottish coastal Gin. Blackwoods or Arbikie. :)
@facundocorradini
8 жыл бұрын
viciouswolf1111 gin always pairs better with lemon.. and even better to use orange bitters instead of aromatic (Angostura) ones. That makes a delicious drink, no doubt. But what's with adding the spirit in two steps?
@viciouswolf1111
8 жыл бұрын
Facundo Corradini Using large grain demerara sugar, just helps to dissolve the sugar a bit more and get more flavour before putting the ice. Not necessary, I just like the wee bit extra sweetness.
What's the bourbon you choose?

Bars that serve craft cocktails sometimes take longer. Patrons understand and accept this. If you want fast, go for house wine, vodka cranberry, or maybe a Bud Lite will be more to your liking.
I find Angostura Orange Bitters have a really unpleasant 'boiled sweet' flavour. I would let the orange flavour just come from the oils of the orange skin garnish - or maybe add a small slice of skin to the mixing glass before you stir. Bitter Truth do some damn fine orange (and other) bitters - and Fee Bro's have a new gin-barrel-aged orange bitters which sound intriguing...
He's keep going and going and going and going. It's an Energizer batteries commercial, right?
Imagine him on a busy night.
Stir again. Hahahaha.
Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe. :D
brandy old fashions is a wisconsin supper club drink
the 1 sugar cube choice the 2 angostura drop and a bit of plain water (cherry syrup or sugar syrup) is made for 2 oz, or at least 1 oz and 1/2 of whisky. So, why put 50% more of spirit in a simple drink as it is.!!!!!!
What's the point of putting the cube on a napkin when you could just put it in the glass? Also, why is it necessary to put the bourbon in 3 times when you could do it once then stir it to dilute or whatever the point of stirring is.
