How to Make an IPA Panel Wipe for Detailing.
An IPA (IsoPropyl Alcohol) Panel Wipe is a really useful thing for anyone who is serious about their detailing to have in their kit. It's easy to make, costs very little, but is extremely useful.
In this video I'll show you how to make the IPA Panel Wipe, then how to use it to remove a sealant from a cars paint.
It's uses range from heavy duty cleaning, removing the oils and residues left behind after paint correction to removing sealants and waxes from panels to give you a full restart with fresh paint. This enables you to get the best bond between waxes and sealants and your cars paint.

    @@jasongraves1841 Spray the panel then start wiping. You can leave it for a couple of seconds but don't leave it too long as it can soften the paint/clearcoat - especially if the car has had any repair paintwork done. Great review- thank you. I'm going to ceramic coat my metallic black car within the next few weeks. After the washing and deconamination stages, I intend to use Meguiars Ultimate Compound, followed by Car Pro's Essence, before ceramic coating with Car Pro's Cquartzuk. Do I complete an IPA wipe after the compound or after applying Essence ?

  • @MySupercarLife

    @MySupercarLife

    6 жыл бұрын

    You can, but Essence contains fillers which would be removed by the IPA, so it depends on your desired outcome. If you're using the Essence to mask any imperfections then don't use the IPA. BUT It might be worth sending an email to CarPro as I'm not 100% sure if CQuartz can be applied over glazes like Essence. Normally you'd apply to bare paintwork. Better to check first than find the coating doesn't adhere to the layer of Essence.

  • @RushIndustries

    @RushIndustries

    This reply may be too late, however... You may apply CQuartz UK over traditional CarPro Essence as it is actually a ceramic coating primer. Carpro Essence Plus is a jeweling topcoat that has minor filling properties for repairing coatings that should not be used before applying coating.

  • @MySupercarLife

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't really get what you're asking. You can use either wax or sealant after polishing. You use the IPA to remove oils from polishes as most are an abrasive compound in an oil solution. When you've finished polishing then you use the IPA to remove the oils which give a bare surface. Then you use either a wax or sealant on to the bare paint surface. If I haven't answered your question pleas let me know. 👍

    Great video... I have a question I have some quite real motorbikes... I've just got some new waxes and polish is it a more sensible idea that I completely washed the bike down then put this ipa on the take off the old polish and everything else that's been on there for quite some then this would then have the bike paintwork prepped for a brand new coating of Wax and whatever sealant or polish I want to put on top as another layer of protection ect??

  • @MySupercarLife

    @MySupercarLife

    4 жыл бұрын

    You don't really need to use it before as if there were any waxes etc. on the paint they will have either naturally broken down (this happens anywhere from 1 week to 3 months) or if you use a polish then they will be removed during that phase. I would go with Polish, IPA, Wax or sealant. The only thing you do need to be very careful of though is that if the bikes are older that the IPA doesn't soften the paint or clearcoat. I would start with a very diluted ipa mix, somewhere in the region of 5% and test it in an area you don't see. I'm not sure how IPA will work with certain paints like Cellulose etc so please be very careful. If you're in any doubt skip the IPA step. It's not worth damaging anything to do it.

    Hi. I just came across your great video purely by chance and oddly I’ve been trying to find the correct dilution of 99% IPA for a while now with no luck. Could you just list recommend IPA volume for soft, medium and hard paints please as I’ll make up individual bottles to suit as I’ve come across some cars I’m correcting that may have had bodyshop or smart repairs so I have to bare in mind the repaired panel paint might not match the rest of the car. Sorry for the long winded question.

    Hi, I've just seen your comment about a question being deleted, which has now disappeared. However I've just found this comment from you. Your comments haven't been deleted so I'm not sure what you mean. However I don't always get chance to reply to them all. Anyway: There is no hard and fast rule about what strength to use on which paint. I would always recommend that you use the lowest volume to start with and then work your way up. It also depends on what coating is on there, whether it's wax or sealant. I would start with 8-10% then 15% then 20% then possibly a 25% for sealants or waxes like colonite. The other problem is that you need to keep them in a sealed bottle, not a spray bottle as the IPA will evaporate from a spray bottle so you will have to bear this in mind as the strength will change when the IPA evaporates. It would be easier to write down the formula for each strength and then make it as you need it.

    ugggghhh that sounds like a pain! In all honesty, you may be best using a citrus based cleaner at high dilution, this might get it off faster. Otherwise you can use neat alcohol (maybe a 70% rubbing alcohol) applied to a cloth then rub the trim - but try this in an area you don't see first as it can turn black plastic white/grey - be very careful. If it's textured trim, you may need to use something like an old tooth brush to scrub at it. It's going to be a bit of trial and error with that one I'm afraid. Good luck - let me know how you go on.

    I have been washing, claying, waxing detailing my cars for years and now my cars have been outside all the time now. I am trying to figure out with out spending too much how to apply certain products that will give the cars clear coat that just waxed smooth water run off look for more than a few weeks. Yes my car sits in sun all day, gets rained on often and has dew on it (water spots) in morning. Using meguires gold class paste, now ultimate liquid waxes. Also using x-press spray wax in between washes. But still only get 2-4 weeks of smooth feeling. I thought these will protect paint for a few months? Do I make sense or am I missing something here? Thanks

    @MySupercarLife

    I understand what you're saying fully. I get the same sort of thing. In some ways it's just the way it is, waxes come in to different categories. You get 'show waxes' which look nice but don't last, then you get 'Longer Life' waxes that don't give as much of a wet look but last longer. Normally you'll find that a wax will say something like up to 6 months protection. This probably means 3 months, and that's protection, not water sheeting and beading. So ideally that would need re-applying every 1 1/2 - 2 months. I don't use spray waxes as I find they break down quickly, You're better using a quick detailer, and getting on that you dillute yourself, mixing that and using it after washing to remove any water marks. That's what I do. For a wax that lasts a bit longer you can use Collinite 476 - it lasts but it's hard to work with. Collinite is a very long lasting wax - rated at 12 months, and it's not too expensive. Other than that you could look in to sealants, like Chemical Guys Jet Seal. This is what I use, then I top it with a wax to make it last longer. So your process would be: Clay, Polish, IPA, Sealant, Sealant, Wax, Wax 2 coats of sealant and 2 coats of wax. This should give you about 6-9 months protection with a bit of luck. Also check that the car soap you're using is PH neutral as this may be stripping the wax coating off. Hope this helps, if you need anymore info let me know.

    1. Use a chemical resistant bottle/spray head as some grades of rubber seals and plastic will get dissolved by IPA 2. Wash and dry the panel, otherwise the mixed up solution would sit on top of the water droplets, especially on a horizontal panel such as the bonnet or roof, you want maximum surface contact with the cleaned top surface of the paint 3. Let the spray on solution to dwell on the panel for a few seconds after spraying and not wipe off straight away 4. Wipe the panels in a figure of 8 motion horizontally, moving down the panel as you go 5. Repeat point 4 but now in a vertical figure of 8 motion, this will remove anything that was left by point 4 Don't go back and forth of the same section with the towel, figure of 8 works better, its the same methodology that is deployed in a medical environment such as wiping down beds and floors in hospital resuscitation rooms between patients; think about it.

  • @MySupercarLife

    I'd recommend using one without fragrance. The only reason being that the fragrance will likley be an oil which, although it shouldn't cause any problems, I would recommend using one with no fragrance. The dawn should be fine as many people use it as an All Purpose Cleaner, it adds to the cleaning power of the Alcohol, but also provides a little lubrication, as IPA is very dry you need something to help the towel move across the surface.

    If it's used too strong, or if the car has been repainted then yes, IPA can harm the clear. It all varies from car to car, and you do always need to test in a small area first. It just depends on what you're wanting to do. If you're removing an existing coating to apply another then you use IPA and start with a weak dilution like 8%, otherwise I just machine polish the original sealant / wax off with a DA. Take a little longer but you can pretty much guarantee that the sealant / wax is gone then.

    Hi, I wouldn't use this to remove the glue, it's not really best for the job. You need something like a tar and glue remover as it will be alot faster and wont harm the paint at all. Have a look for bodyshop panel wipe in a store that sells bodyshop consumables. It's like a pre-paint panel wipe. That's one of the fastest ways (and cheapest) to remove it, or they may have an adhesive remover. The products from these places normally come in a gallon and cost around the same as a small bottle of 'detailing' tar and glue remover ;-)

    It's strange because here in the UK, we have Tar and Glue Remover, but I couldn't find it in the States. I think it might be the same, it just eats in to the adhesive and dissolves it. You need a few cloths as it gums them up pretty quickly. Most Tar and Glue products in the UK are petrolium based (you could use gasoline but I wouldn't recommend it) The best thing I can say is to try the Tar and Bug remover on a little bit and see if it works. It sounds like the same sort of stuff - Just had a look and the Turtle Wax one sold in Walmart is Gasoline based, so i'd imagine it's the same thing just possibly not as strong.

  • @MySupercarLife

    @MySupercarLife

    It's no problem. I don't think I'd Clay it, that's better for bonded contaminants that have eaten in to the clear coat. Claying can and generally does add some scratches, if not scratches then it can 'marr' the surface (it does this on my Audi) where you have a section of the paint that looks dull like it has been flatted with sandpaper. Then you have to polish it up. I would stick to chemically removing the adhesive, you'll probably find that once you start it will come off easy. Just wear disposable gloves as the glue becomes sticky when you remove it and takes ages to get off you hands! Trust me, been there! Good luck let me know if you need any more info or to let me know how it goes.

  • @MySupercarLife

    7 жыл бұрын

    Ideally yes. You polish (either by hand or machine) then use the IPA to remove the oils left behind by the polish. This then gives bare paint (or clear coat) for the wax to bond to. You don't have to do it though, and as always car should be taken. Always remember that IPA isn't a very good lubricant an as a rule is very drying (if you get it on your skin it will feel very dry) therefore if you have soft paint then in some cases you can add swirl marks or marring back in to the surface by using IPA.

    That's a very good question. As long as it's from glass and not a visor then I would imagine so yes, IPA will remove most coatings. But please do let me know if you try it and it does/doesn't work. If it doesn't work then you can use polish to remove it, but you may need arms like popeye lol.

    hi i bought a 100mm bottle of 70% IPA , but would i still need to water it down so not to harm the paint

    Hi, Yes you do still need to add water. It takes a bit of working out to see how much, so here goes: Your IPA at 70%, per 100ml for example is 70ml alcohol and 30ml of water. So when making your ipa you have to take in to account the water that's already in the alcohol. To make it easier you work out what you would need to give you 100ml of alcohol from your 70% mix. This is 143ml of 70% as 70% of 143 gives 100. So this leaves you with an easier way to work it out: If you want 1000ml (1L) 10% IPA spray you need 143ml of 70% IPA and 857ml of water If you want 1000ml (1L) 15% IPA spray you need 215ml of 70% IPA and 785ml of water If you want 1000ml (1L) 20% IPA spray you need 286ml of 70% IPA and 714ml of water If you want 500ml (1L) 10% IPA spray you need 71ml of 70% IPA and 429ml of water If you want 500ml (1L) 15% IPA spray you need 106ml of 70% IPA and 393ml of water If you want 500ml (1L) 20% IPA spray you need 142ml of 70% IPA and 358ml of water Then just add a cap or half a cap of All Purpose Cleaner to give some cleaning and lubrication to the mix. Hope this helps!

    hi thanks for the info , ok when i watched your video it said i would need 360ml for water and 40ml of ipa , is that correct or was that only on the 99% mix for 10%. basically i bought a 70% small bottle which had 100ml in it , ive used some for some other projects neat (not on paint) for wrapping etc and i was wondering how much i would need to make up a 500ml spray bottle

  • @MySupercarLife

    No probs. Yes, the video is for 99.9% IPA to make 400ml, but I should have done 500ml to make it easier, sorry I'd read you have 1000ml not 100ml. The 70% is the same stuff, just with water added so it's not as strong. I use the 99% for loads of stuff around the house it's ace! I would say, on the safe side you could make a 15% which from the above you'd need 106ml of 70% ipa and 393ml of water. If you don't have enough then you could use 71ml of your 70% ipa with 429ml of water to make a 10%, but that isn't very strong. Otherwise you could make something like a 12% which if my maths is right would be 85ml of 70% and 415ml of water, this is just strong enough to remove wax, but a 15% would be better. I got 5 litres of 99% from eBay a couple of weeks ago for under £10 and they sell it in smaller quantities too. You should be able to get 70% from supermarkets or chemists otherwise but it's more expensive.

    ok thanks for that , basically im detailing my car over the weekend and after i use the Gtechniq p1 polish i will be doing a panel wipe to remove the oil residues before i apply liquid crystal sealant , this was recommended to me by the gtecniq guys as it gives the sealant more adhesive to stick to to basically keep the car cleaner ...i have got this morning a 500ml bottle of deoinised water but i probably wont need that much maybe if i used a small spray bottle of say 250ml how much would i need of the IPA? i dont mind if i have to use the 100ml bottle with a small amount in of the IPA , i have a sprayhead for the 100ml bottle as well ..when i fiirst got the iPA i thought you could just spray it on as it is but thats not the case as youve said...also i will be using a claybar before the polish as well so that will remove the sealants /wax

  • @MySupercarLife

    Ahh, yes that's correct. A wipe down after polish gives a bare surface for the sealant to bond to. For 250ml just half the amounts above. For polish removal just use 15% to be on the safe side: 15% IPA spray you need 53ml of 70% IPA and 197ml of water - obviously this doesn't have to be exact so 50ml of ipa and 195ml of water would be as good. IPA neat is very harsh and can remove paint, or at least cause problems especially if any panels have had paintwork recently. I wouldn't use it neat unless you're sterilising something. Always best to water it down and start low to avoid problems.

    I would imagine so, but I've never personally used it, you just have to remember that 70% alcohol has 30% water already added - so just change the recipe to suit So (if my maths is correct LOL) to make 500ml at 20% you'd need: 20% of 500 is 100: 100ml of 70% ipa is 70ml alcohol 30ml water to make 20% you need 400ml water - your alcohol contains 30ml already so take that away and you need to add 370ml of water to your bottle. Then a cap full of All Purpose Cleaner. Hope this helps you out a bit

    Hi MySuperCar Life , Can i use car degreaser instead of APC ???

  • @MySupercarLife

    @MySupercarLife

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi, No - you need to use APC as a surfactant and lubricant. Degreaser is a solvent so it's too dry to use. Hope this helps

    @@MySupercarLife Alright understood. So i will IPA panel wipe before compound and polish . After compound and polish it does release some oil, do i need to IPA wipe or regular wash with car shampoo to remove those oil before sealant /wax/coating ?

  • @MySupercarLife

    Personally I'd use a weaker mix (around 10% IPA) to remove the oils. This way you can check your work as you are polishing as the oils can sometimes hide fine swirl marks that are still there. If you use a wash you may find that some areas needed extra attention. Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks!! Yes you can but it's better to use APC as it doesn't foam, it's only to add a bit of lubricant as the alcohol is very dry. I would only add a few drops though.
