How to Make an End Grain Cutting Board w/ 💎 Design | Woodworking
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I’ll show you how to make 💎 (diamond) end grain cutting board designs that are unique and use the grain of the wood to make a statement. These are butcher block style and even though they look extra fancy they can be DIY projects for those with a workshop that has a table saw and a router.

Fix This Build That: All that math for nothing! I’m into randomness (I.e. math avoidance). I want to just eyeball the design. Love the wetting the board to availed the fuzziness. Thanks!
Awesome how these turned out, especially the tones of the wood.
Turned out beautiful, love the dark wood colour after the oil is applied :)
a drum sander is a life goal :)
Always love me some good cutting board vids Brad! Nice work and great tips on mathing out a board. Thanks for sharing!

The boards look really cool. Good work.
GR8 detailed step by step production which really is helping those of us that are just learning.
wow loving it.
Those came out great. I finally pulled out my wallet and did a project with maple and walnut and I think I have enough scraps for my first cutting board. Hope mine turns out even half as good as yours did.

I'm sure they'll be great
Love the diamond/bow tie look. For end grains I love to use a chamfer bit on the bottom and leave the top square, kind of makes it look like it’s floating. I would 100% recommend walrus oil rather than the oil at Lowe’s/Home Depot. I’ve been using it for a while now and I apply it by hand as well, and let me tell you, the wood feels healthier since I’ve been using it. Once you try it you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Check them out!
I love the bow-tie board! Very awesome 😎
They are beautiful!
Great job Brad. I make my boards with that finger/hand go all around the board, I like the look. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nice one Brad!!
Really cool man! I’ve been thinking about building one of these with some rift sawn white oak I have. I already used a piece to make a mallet head with the diamond pattern and it looks great.

Those cutting boards came out very nicely! I can't decide which one I liked more. You mentioned that after 20 minutes you buffed the boards. Did you hand buff them or buff them with a wheel? I always enjoy your videos. Just the right amount of entertainment and education! - Ed

I’m a new woodworker, only about a year. I’ve made two cutting boards so far, and I find that when I am finishing with the mineral oil and Beeswax oil combo you used, that it still feels oily for a while after. Granted, I haven’t been the one using these, as they were both gifts, but I am curious if you have any advice for getting them cleaned up nice. It seems that no matter how much I wipe and wipe, it still feels a little oily on my fingers. Any advice for me?? Thanks, love watching your videos!!
Nice video. I've always been worried to line up the joints like that, essentially leaving a few continuous joints through one piece, and so I've always opted to stagger them like when laying bricks. Have you ever run into an issue of that creating a weak spot? One tip, there is no need to buy that expensive "cutting board oil" (just for clarification I'm not talking about the beeswax one). You can buy mineral oil in at any pharmacy for closer to 3 or 4 bucks. The mineral oil in a pharmacy is meant for human consumption, so it is definitely food grade.
@Fixthisbuildthat
5 жыл бұрын
I've never had an issue with the seam down the middle. That's a long grain joint so it's super strong. Not much different that a glue up up two boards into one panel
Awesome boards but where did you get your cast iron router table top?
how does one get flat, parallel surfaces with a thickness planer?
Hi! Love the video! I have a question about the throwaway line you said about not putting an endgrain cutting board through a planer...... What happens if you do?
@WoodworkingbyAsher
4 жыл бұрын
When you put an endgrain board through the planer the best scenario is that you get massive tearout at the end of your piece. Worst scenario is that half your cutting board blows out the back of your planer and gives your shop a new window :)

Heyyyy, that trick isn't supposed to work with squeaky clean clamps. I thought you had to level up by having grimy clamps like me to make it work. Actually.... that sounds like it could be the next Woodpeckers product, the Woodpeckers Clamp Cleaner in red anodized aluminum 😂

How are you liking that Kreg table? I saw Chris Salamone’s video on it and I’d love to hear your thoughts since y’all do different types of projects. But I love the cutting boards. The bow tie one is my personal favorite.

I really like it, but wish the table was more multipurpose like an assembly table. I'll probably use the saw way more than the table and saw together

Awesome work. I don’t have a drum sander so when I do end grain birds through the planer, I will glue on an extra border strip of pine to prevent tear out. Is that what you were earning against? Or is there another potential mistake I’m not accounting for?
@Fixthisbuildthat

Nice workbench top.. is that PARF? (20mm dog holes 96mm apart) ?
I had a feeling the walnut was going to be cutting boards. I wasn't expecting end grain AND patterns though. I wish I had your supply of walnut. Do you get your wood locally? I only have Chattanooga hardwood and Woodcraft near me. Love your work, but you keep making my "project list" bigger lol. Might try this after I finish my wife's purple-heart phone speaker. Gonna bake it tonight to bring out the purple before poly.

I find a ton of wood off Craigslist. I almost never buy from a store unless it's pine
I only have one question what kind of glue are using
What can you use if you don't have a drum sander?
I am learning, but is this really an edge grain cutting board? Is there a difference?
Those turned out really nice! Jealous of the drum sander. If you're going to make more cutting boards, you should check out The Original Cutting Board Mafia group on Facebook if you want to see some other interesting designs. The makers in there come up with some pretty wild designs.
