How To Make an Anvil Stand : My Favorite DIY Anvil Stand + Anvil Stand Plans available!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Are you curious how to make an anvil stand? This video covers my favorite anvil stand design, plus I have anvil stand plans available at my website www.blacksmithpdfs.com .
Making an anvil stand is mostly fab work... you'll need a welder, some tubing, and some steel plate. Anvil stands, looking for ideas? We'll cover how to build your own stand, what anvil stand height should be. Plus I've got full measurements for most heights included in my PDF at my website.

If you're curious what tools I used when I was building this, I added some more info in the video description as a resource.

great vid roy surprised you didn't tack and turn the stand to weld the feet on as most people do when they say they don't weld that well but it looks like you got great penetration on the welds i think i prefer your voice over time laps even normal speed voice overs but your point was made clearly thank you for the time you put into us God bless

Built a few, watch a few being built. 1 thing some builders don't do is clean the surface n preheat before welding. It's a must. Sure glad we do it the same. Congratulations Iron Brother

I have never used steel for an anvil stand.. mine have always been wood. It's something to think about though. Whether it's time lapse or real time.. I like when you talk your way through the project... details, details, details! ! :-) Thanks for the video..

+shadowcastre thank you for the great comment! Yeah this video was shot a couple months ago and I just finally got the plans together to be able to release this video. Now that I have the new editing software I'm able to do voice overs. Which I think those are doing pretty good myself on all my new videos :-)

Great build. 😁 2:46 Math aside: When you said the legs need to be 19" long, I think what you meant is that they need to be 19" TALL. Since people's eyes tend to get glassy when trigonometry is involved, i'll stop there, but it's fairly easy to compute length needed (c) and floor distance from vertical (b) if you have desired height (a) and the tangent angle (12 degrees). If you skip that however, your stand will be slightly shorter than expected, and will need taller feet. Cheers. Cheers.

Those without thick steel plate or ability to machine it can order new steel waterjetted or CNC torch cut to your desired dimensions. Your local machine shop can either to that or more likely send you to the service they use. Waterjetting and torch outfits can cut some very thick stock neatly at reasonable prices. For very expensive jobs try to get multiple quotes as prices vary considerably.

that stand is nice and I am sure it's heavy duty. I never thought about putting sand in it but it makes sense. have you tried making a lighter stand for people that travel and do shows?

Here's my thought for an anvil stand: 12" x 12" x 1/2" thick steel floor plate. Welded to that is 6" x 6" square tubing of whatever thickness (1/4" sounds OK). Fill the square tubing with sand and weld another piece of 12" x 12" x 1/2" plate to the top. Then bolt the whole shebang to the floor. You think that'll work? I should be able to find all the metal at the local scrap yard over time

+Keith Vance using the same method my Anvil is a 465 lb North German double horn anvil. As far as Anvil weight is concerned I do not believe it matters depending on how well you weld the legs. Thanks for the great question God bless you

Great video! Couple questions..... Why did you decide to use sand? I have heard a lot of people use sawdust and oil in the legs. Does sand work better? Also, I have not gotten a straight answer on this, why 3 and not 4 legs? Is it a traditional thing or is it better for sound suppression? I currently have a 2' piece of rail and a huge dock cleat that I need to make / find stands for and am still debating on wood stand vs steel one.

Chris Lawrence As Josh said. wont wobble. Even the Pre Columbian central American Indians would make their corn grinding stones with 3 legs for the same purpose.

+Not only Wood I used to have a wood stump for my anvils myself. But after I made the switch to Steel stands I won't ever go back to wooden blocks. Then again there are some traditionalist that will never like a steel stand for an anvil and that's okay too as long as you get some forging done LOL

Just a thought and didn’t do the math to determine the difference, but a leg length of 19” at a 12 degree angle won’t give a vertical height of 19” I think. At 12 degree angle, it may not be meaningful. Great videos.

The time lapse was pretty good (/possibly/ too fast, but that could be personal {mine} preference). One thing that might improve your videos: find something to diffuse/soften your light sources. Bare bulbs (and DIRECT sunlight) can play devil with video. A simple white sheet over the bulbs can sometimes make a huge difference in video quality. Reflected light is used often as well. I realize that you are recording in your shop, and working light trumps recording light (almost) every time. If you look at the sunlight reflected off the floor (3:20), and then look at the ceiling lights (9:40), you should see what I mean. Lighting can be *HARD* to get right. I'm certainly no expert, but it seems like something that is often overlooked. Keep up the good works.

Brian Neeley +Brian Neeley thank you for watching this video and thank you for all the great advice. I hope to be able to improve the shop lighting as I go on. This video was shot a couple months ago with my old cell phone in HTC and now I have a new cell phone with better resolution and the ability to adjust my lighting via the camera settings on the phone. Which I hope is turning into better viewable videos for this audience. At some point you're right I will have to invest into some diffused lights to put around the shop as that would be an excellent idea. Thank you for the constructive criticism I always appreciate that God bless you and will catch you on the next video!

It's just my opinion but you should do the time lapse in post production and leave the noises of the grinder and the welder it would make the video a more enjoyable experience to me, but still a great video keep up the great work

I enjoy all of your videos but do not always have time to watch the long instructional videos so edited is good too, sometimes I just want to be entertained, so I was hoping you would make some videos geared toward that, like Alec Steele's videos, they are just entertainment. You dont have to be a blacksmith to enjoy those kind of videos. I am not being critical, I am asking for you to make both, more videos. I think your channel would appeal to more people if you had a variety like that, many people would enjoy just watching you work, a blog I guess
