    I like to pick the 'downwsrd' tabs (the ones that get clamped in the vice jaws) from nearer the center of the stack. That leaves some at each end to sit on top of the vise jaws and so keep the thing from falling. I got tired of picking it up from the floor after opening the. Vise to change workpiece. Great project, as usual I like your version better than mine... Thanks for another fun and useful item!

    I built mine to have a block at each end, so even if I have to use all of the tabs, it will still rest on the vice jaw and bench enough to move the jaw for repositioning without falling through.

    I made mine from three pieces of 3/4" stock with 1/2" and 1/4" pieces at either end. It's adjustable in 1/4" increments from 3" down to 1/4" but the version I use most often is just a 3/4" piece on a dowel, since that's the stock size I normally work with.

    Very nice. I've been saving expired credit and ID cards while I clean out my office, although adding a few thin pieces of wood would make adding up to the right size quicker.

    Great idea. I like the way it stays put on top the vice. Unlike a piece of scrap that falls out every time you make an adjustment.

    I made one of these useful gadgets this week using paint stirring sticks. I didn't have any long thin hardwood strips lying around, but I do have dozens of unused paint stirring sticks . Paint sticks are a little less than 1/8 inch thick. I cut a handful of them into 4 inch lengths and attached them with a bolt and wingnut. It works great!

    Great little device! Thank you. I would burn the likeness of 1990’s MTV Heavy Metal vj Ricky Rachman into the outside spacers, just because. The world needs an anti-Rachman device.

    Great project, I've been meaning to make one for a while. I was trying to engineer (in my head) something that could be permanently attached to the bench alongside the vice and simply rotated into place when needed, but this more pragmatic and simple approach is much better.

    I have thought about making one of these & using Masonite or plywood. The thicknesses would be one @ 1/8" at each end & several @ 1/4" between. That gives a lot of flexibility with a +/- 1/16" of support. You could substitute 3/8" for the 1/4" if you don't need such small margins.

    Those work well but require a second hand and need to be reset when you release the pressure.

  • @WoodByWrightHowTo

    @WoodByWrightHowTo

    A wedge will work fairly well. The problem is when you open the vise it slides down a little farther and so you're constantly readjusting it to match your work. Whereas this you put the right legs down. You set it there and you don't have to mess with it. It doesn't require another hand to get it set up right.

    Useful. I will cut one out using 3mm scraps on my laser cutter. I will engrave cumulative thickness on each one, for quick sizing. A spring washer will give the friction needed. A 1mm piece on one end, and 2mm on the other will give me finer control of thickness- because I think this has other uses.
