I wasn't clever enough to think of this myself, but I have the same problem with my vice. I took a shortcut and used a stack of plasatic laminate samples from the Big Box. They already have the hole drilled, and are about 1/16" thick each. Grabbed a bolt and nut out of the mystery jar, and now I'm anti-racked in less than 60 seconds! THAT'S why I never throw anything away!

So simple, keeps the various thicknesses in one place and it’s bulky enough so I don’t need 3 hands to grab my work piece, the supplementary piece and then turn the vice. Thanks very much.

Great tool! I bought an old Wilton vise last weekend. This devise could come in handy.

Snide remark! Ok, I lied... it's a great idea. I just built my first leg vise, and I set it on an angle for a wider jaw. I think one of these will be my next project, thanks for sharing!

Fantastic I've been meaning to make one as well. I made the wooden jaws of my vice way longer than the metal parts that secure them, so the racking from one end to the other is extreme, i can't get a good grip on small pieces.

Nice job. Very useful when you remember it's there so mine is on a string and hangs up above my bench next to my gang plug extension lead. Coated hardboard is perfect for this.

I've seen machinists use adjustable parallels that essentially use two blocks with a sliding dovetail in between but canted at an angle so that as they move the thickness changes. i dont know how practical something like this would be for antiracking since it doesnt work well for thin material but maybe it would work for something else.

Machinists use a 123 block with 1 2 and 3 inches on either side, I always thought something like that would work as an anti racking device. This looks like a much more elegant solution

does it have an advantage over wedges? We all have this problem and your design is very reliable. But doesnt a simple wedge not do the job?

Wedges work well they just require another hand. If you open the vice you have to re adjust it.

No. The split was caused because of the lead screw. Basically it is a wedge and if you're working with small pieces, you have to make sure to keep the fibers together, otherwise they will split out.
