I never thought to sync the VCO to the kick pulse to insure the waveform starts at the same point for every hit. Thanks!
Kick is the most important ingredient, and this is the best video on how to do it in eurorack. I've watched it five times now. Thank you!
Wow... That was truly fantastic! I really didn't expect much from this tutorial at the beginning but then wow.... I have been trying to find new uses for the in and out syncs on my oscillators and this really helped! Great stuff! SUB
Great info. Recently purchased a Korg MS20 to synthesize drum sounds and this looks like the next level. The possibilities are endless with the modular approach. There goes my wallet.
love it ,that's the way I got into music , I had a teacher in high school that show me this style some how .
I made the mistake to start building up a modular system and it turned out to be one of the greatest things ever. seriously.

I started with the moog mother32 because it is a very solid standalone unit that can be completely integrated in a future modular system. it takes you a lot of time to figure out the very basics of modular synthesis but it is a very rewarding thing. don´t cry about all the money spent, it is well worth it. so much fun that never gets old. once your system is growing, so is your knowledge about creating sound. with this kind of system you really can develope your own unique style of music and sound, which is just awesome. here´s what i put together so far: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/662177 its still growing and is one of the most beautiful things i ever owned ;-) let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you Tobi for this modular inspiration!!!!
Who could possibly give this a thumbs down? Bravo and thanks Tobi !!!
he made all my favorite style kicks so easy :O
Somehow I never thought about using the oscillator sync. Great Stuff.

Genius! thanks Tabi and DJ TT...
His modular setup in his studio had me drooling!

Now I know how to make a bass drum. Great method that I can now use to create other sounds. Cheers.
Very simple but great idea to use all the waveform outputs for a kickdrum!
LOVE THE PASSION :) AND GOOD VIDEO THANK YOU.
Great video!
im doing this now : ) is awesome! many many thanks!!! : ))))
never thought of the sync trick. Thanks !
think there's a sample called 'analogkick1' which you can download if not
Nice video!
Knows his tools, coole Socke der Tobi....dankeschööön :)
Thank you!

Tobi is amazing
awesome. I want to make my kick drums using modular synthesis

@Steel City Buds Channel Well yeah it is, I agree on that (Although it is still dependant on what kind of a kickdrum you buy ;) But you forget that those things are able to do a lot more than just being a kickdrum. Thats the real beauty of it. The shapeshifting nature of modular. Giving you the opportunity to patch something new up every single time. With an unprecidented control over every single detail you can dream of. And that is an amazing thing, right? :) Edit: I still found your comment really funny :D
tobi you are awesome.....so, how would you recommend someone break into this sound desgn, music production menagerie?
great vid man, "its highly addictive , i warn you" ;)
are there any videos about this but showing you how to create all the diferents sounds in a loop?
Correct me if im wrong please but can you make the exact same kickdrum possibilitys with the Pittsburgh Lifeforms SV-1?

At 4:24: "So then I take the output of the second envelope and put it to the pitch input". No, you don't, Toby! According to the layout of the Z3000, you actually put it into the FM2 input! I was wondering why I didn't get the same sound even though I was using the same envelope and oscillator modules, and this was driving me crazy! Later in the video, at 7:00 to be exact, he actually patches one of the attenuverter outputs of the Maths to the 1v/o input on the Z3000 to control the pitch.
great!
please make more videos like this one but for newbies
great video...wish there was a better top down angle where it was easier to se the patch.
Careful! I shorted out my whole rack twice by letting patch cables dangle down over bus connections like that. Fortunately my power supply protected everything but still.

oh god this is my nightmare scenario
So how much equipment and cables do you need to make a full drum kit? :/
Wow you are a genius
I love this stuff I really do but sometimes I am like "I am just going to go grab that pearl kick drum and and a sweet ribbon mic with that tube pre and make that kick the old fashion way" lol.
Never drop another end of the patch cable inside the case as the guy did - you can short circuit your system!

when he said gabba kick it reminded me of the good old days that hardcore wasn't just a one kick party
How/where would the Optomix be inserted in this chain?
excellet vid, someone has a recom to record this on a more accurate bpm? i'm currently using voltage modular from cherry audio, i tryna rec but the transient keeps moving slightly from the 1.1 bar postion, it does not keep constantly

Thank you Tobi. You are an f***ing expert. I ve seen it a few times. If anyone is interested and wants to learn more about it join our course in Berlin on 11th October 16 @ Noisy Academy with Stefan Knauthe. Stefan will explain in Ableton Live how it all works and it will make your decision to buy a modular system easier.
He knows how to do it.
Wow!
i am going to start with modular but didn't know which modules to buy, wel now i know haha. how would you implement this in ableton, just record a one bar loop?
@ards5161
7 жыл бұрын
Jan De Buysser you can get very similar results w/ operator, it has the same modules more or less; multiple instances of different sound generators (operators in this case) with mix control, there is a pitch envelope, plus much much more. Would suggest to just look up how to create a kickdrum w/ operator, ought to get you on the way
This video invites me to drop all « ready made » sound modules !!! 😮
that cwejman is worth more than the rest of the modules combined. this was the video that go me into modular and it's emotional damaging to know i just cant justify the cost of owning that vca/mixer ( probably )
That is really fucking cool.
dankeee
sorry, i don't understand well at 1:55, connecting the 2nd Maths trigger input to the sync input of VCO? From input to input?... Sorry, because I'm a newbie. The camera POV is not so understandable.
I guess you need an analog Speedmaster to accurately measure the release of the envelopes ;-)
so much more creative and interesting ... than, edm jocks punching multiple kick samples ...
"if i wanna make gabba" hahahhahahahha im dying :D
WOW!!!!
Nice.
If someone was to write up all the connections I would be eternally grateful.

Hey he has five modules An envelope generator(make noise maths) A four channel mixer(vca4mx) An oscillator(tiptopz3000) A cross filter/out- a-138d And a lfo-a145 ---- He takes the clock of the pulse log to envelope 1 trig(maths) He takes that same trig out into env 2 Then the same trig from 2 into Oscar sync function(vca) He then takes all 4 Oscillator outputs into the 4 channel inputs He takes the mixer(vca) into the a138d so you can hear it on your system Afterwards he takes the env 1 output to a mixers cv input Then the mixer cv input to the other 3 channels input. Later he takes the env 2 out into the oscillator pitch Then an extra envelope into the osc pitch Then he takes the mix and puts it through a filter Then the trig out into sync. I may not have put it all correct especially towards the end. But I’ll edit later if I have to.

Where can I find those type of patch leads? Do they have a name?

Dj scientist !!!! Wow
That feeling of relief when he starts listing the necessary modules and you realize you have all of them lol. Day is safe.
what a guy
If you make the same patch on Reaktor 6, you will get the same analog style imperfections for every hit.
That VCA should have the CV in normaled to all channels, no? Luckily I have most of those modules... save the 4 channel VCA, now I have another excuse to pick up another module.
Speedmaster!! :)
This is Raketentechnik
THIS GUY FUCKING RULES!
I take de clock of de Äll Äff Ooh - just de palls! 🤣🤣
Instead of using all the VCAs was not possible to mix them with a mixer, and then pass the mix through the VCA? Maybe I'm wrong.. Anyway, great video!
@delinquentdialect5869
7 жыл бұрын
The VCA module he was using IS a mixer. So why have two modules when one will do. Also he wants independent VCA control of each wave form, rather than mixing the waves then applying the VCA after. Hence the use of two of the envelopes on the MATHS module
@precarious333
7 жыл бұрын
+GreatMateWorkshop You are correct. Either arrangement will work the same effect. In fact most people don't have 4 VCAs to dedicate to a kick! Makes much more sense to mix then into a single VCA. I think he only did it the other way because that's how that particular module is set up.

Nice video and tutorial, but its a risk to have the case open like you have . Dpnt show the new guys this. A cable can contact the psu or a other power line. Its a bit dangerous ...
fucking awesome :)
I wish I could use it on a plane ^_^
i don't understand how you just get a kick drum sound like that. I've tried this method with various envelopes, oscillators, gates vs lfos... all I get is fart noises. this sounds like a compressed kick drum, and mine sounds nothing like that. I don't have MATHS, so maybe that's why. doesn't make any sense though. i suck
Ya looks like im a continue to use sample kicks
the reason he's syncing it is to make sure the waveform starts on the start of the transient, not because it will drift out of time.... its not traktor ctfu* edit: autocorrect fucked ctfu up
Jeus!

omg heart attack seeing the cables hanging in to the case...
I don't understand why youd sync the waveform lol, it's more like a real kick drum then and you'll probably end up using this from a sampler anyway, where the phase can be kept always the same nice to see a really in depth tutorial on this though, I'd like to see other drums made and customised by this person

If you are doing high speed kickdrums with no sync, you will get unpredictable DC clicks. At least if it is synced you can deal with clicks with tuning/ env times/ etc and produce or lose them in a uniform way.
Nice, but that Jupiter 8 tho...
