How to make an adjustable dado jig for trimmers

I will introduce how to make an adjustable dado jig for processing grooves for trimmers (dado joint).
Dado joint is a joint that is often used for shelves, etc., but it requires precision processing of the grooves.
This adjustable dado jig enables high-precision follow-up joints even with a trimmer that does not have a plunge function like a router.

Thank you!

A very nice, cleverly designed tool that looks easy to replicate. There are many variations on this type of jig, and NONE of them address one particular item: The cutting tool that you use to machine the thinner board to width, at 2"21, and 3"38 is the ONLY cutter to use when using the tool, so if you used a 1/4" cutter at the beginning, you must always use a 1/4". If, for some reason you want to use a 1/2" cutter, you must make new boards cut to width with a 1/2" cutter

Thanks for the video, the JIG you built is very effective and easy to use. But I have a doubt. At minute 13.53, you make a bit change, I assume that the width of that bit is the same as that of the previous bit, otherwise the JIG would have been modified. Could you confirm this. Thank you

The bit I replaced is a top bearing pattern bit with the bearing attached to the base of the bit. Originally, this jig can only be used with specific bits. In that case, press the side of the base of the trim router against the guide plate on the top of the jig while cutting. In the case of the replaced top bearing pattern bit, cutting is performed while pressing the bit bearing against the guide plate (thin plywood) at the bottom of the jig, without pressing the side of the base of the trim router against the guide plate at the top of the jig. It is possible to perform cutting without changing the jig. *The bit diameter of the top bearing pattern bit must be larger than the diameter of the specific bit. Sorry for the lack of detailed images of that part in the video.

After you make this jig, are you only able to use the size bit you cleaned up the 1st two edges with?

In addition to the two-edge cleaned bits, you can use top-bearing pattern bits. (Top-bearing pattern bits are bits with a bearing at the base of the bit.) However, the diameter of the top-bearing pattern bit that can be used must be larger than the diameter of the two-edge cleaned bits.

The direction of the cut will help expel the cut sawdust. So for a shallow cut use an up-cut spiral bit to push the dust up. A down-cut spiral bit will push the dust down which is useful if your router bit is going all the way through the wood. You can buy combination spiral cuts, where the bottom of the bit pushes the dust up and then the cut transitions to a downward cut at the top of the bit. This is useful if you are making multiple passes and slowly lowering the router cut with each successive pass. Hopefully I explained that well enough. 😊
