How to make a wooden hair pin / hair fork

Ойын-сауық

Here is a quick video of how I make wooden hair pins or as some call them hair forks. I've made a few fixtures to speed up the process since I try and make them in batches. There is a great deal of hand work but it makes for great practice with hand tools and surfacing. One unique feature is vacuum infusing the mineral oil in a shop made vacuum chamber. This pulls more oil into the wood allowing the finish to last longer.
This hair pin is made with Black Walnut and it is finished with food grade mineral oil and beeswax.
Detailed video breakdown below.
I hope this helps. Get out to the shop and make one!
Or if you’d rather, you can find them here - etsy.me/2QCzxH4
Be well,
_Mike

I have just ordered one of your reversible hair forks and am so glad you posted this video showing how you make them. They are so lovely. Thanks for the obvious care you are taking in their creation. Any idea how long it takes to make just one? (you mentioned making them in batches)

Thank you so much for your support and kind words! If I were to make just one from scratch it would take a few hours over the course of a couple days. I prefer making large batches the blanks that way I can carve in smaller batches (6-12) to keep stock available in the shop. Carving, sanding, and oiling take about 30-45 minutes per pin. I hope this helps. Hit me up with any other questions you have. I enjoy sharing my process.

@@MustCreateThings I figured as much on the timing. I wood turn pens and making one at a time feels like it takes longer vs batching them.

This video was very helpful and answered a lot of my questions I would of had. The one question I do have is what type of drill bit did you use to cut out the center?

Hello. Thank you for reaching out. I used an end mill in a milling machine. You could drill two holes and use a coping saw or one hole and cut out the fork on the band saw as well. If you use a band saw I would recommend gluing a little block of wood in at the fork end to make shaping easier until the very end. I hope this helps and good luck!

So did you evacuate that tube when it was soaking in mineral oil? What’s the benefit of doing that? Also why glue thin slices together instead of carving from one solid piece? Is that necessary in order to get it to keep its curve? Nice work, I enjoyed watching 🤙🏼

Hello Kenny! Yes it’s a vacuum tube. While the wood is in the oil under vacuum most of the air is pulled out. When the vacuum is turned off they are allowed to soak pulling the oil back into the wood where the air once was. I do this for a deep penetration of oil. I glue thin slices for added strength. It’s not necessary. If you don’t I recommend orienting the grain in the direction of the teeth of the comb. This way they won’t break along a grain line when used. I hope this helps. Hit me up if it doesn’t. Thanks for stopping by 🤙🤙🤙

It hold the oils much longer. When is didn’t use the vacuum the oil would need replenished in a day or so. I’ve had a comb in my pocket for a little over a year now that still feels good. I have touched it up a couple times with wax and it does see beard oil but it does last much longer. Hope this helps.

dude what is the mineral oil used for?

It is used as the primary penetrating finish. It keeps the wood from drying out over time. I end up waxing them before using to provide additional protection that will need to be reapplied over time.

why cut it in thin pieces, just to stick it back together with lime?

  • @MustCreateThings

Thanks for asking! The laminations add strength as well asl allow me to impart a slight curve into the forks. If there are any imperfections in a lamination the other two strips will provide additional strength. Hope all is well. Thanks again.

can somebody please explain, why does he not just use the piece of wood as it is? Why cut it into strips and glue it together?

  • @MustCreateThings

You can use one piece of wood. It wouldn’t be a problem. I suggest you make sure the grain is running in the direction of the teeth. Otherwise they will be weak and break. Good luck!

the reason is because you can bend the wood without cracking it, 30 seconds in you can see he created an arch out of the wood. A single tick piece of wood wont bend as easy or might crack. The arch holds the hair in place better.
