How to make a Woodblock Print, Part 2: Carving (Japanese art form)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part 2: Learn how to create a Japanese woodblock print at home! This tutorial series will show you step-by-step how to make your first print without big spending on materials. I was inspired to make this series due to my past experiences. When I was new to this hobby, I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get started without an excess of expensive supplies. With many possible technique variants, I also got lost in the research rather than jumping right in. In this video, I show what I hope is a more manageable approach to this art form. Using my experience, I tried to select the most simple and effective techniques to start with. I hope to give anyone interested in this hobby the confidence to start as soon as possible.
Part 2 of this series covers all of the carving: key block carving, printing transfer sheets, color separations, and color block carving. After this video your block set will be finished and ready to print! Please let me know if you have any questions or recommendations in the comments. I would also appreciate a like or subscription to help my channel grow!

Materials List for Part 2
------------------------------------------------
Colored highlighter or marker - Brighter colors are generally better.
Thick brush - Here I will paste the link to the Japanese brushes that I use, they are on the affordable side. If this is not in your budget, get creative! I'm sure there is some type of brush that can produce similar results; I would start by looking into shoe brushes. Foam brushes could be a place to start, although probably not ideal. www.imcclains.com/catalog/bru...
Cheap paint brush - Any cheap watercolor / acrylic brush will work. Something that can mix and pick up some liquid.
Sumi Ink - Here is the exact kind I have used. There are many options available on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Yasutomo-KY6-S...

In seeing how much you carve away, I wonder if it might be easier, at least in some areas to build up the areas to print instead of carving everything else away. A few years ago I went to a printmaking workshop where we did a number of novel techniques. My favorite started with a thin board and then we created an image on the board using various kinds of adhesive tape. Masking tape, scotch tape and paper tape as well as just plain paper glued down on the board. Then we applied thick printers ink, rubbing on a thin layer and after carefully laying some paper on top we rubbed it down onto the plate with the back of a wooden spoon. The variety of textures created by the different tapes was quite amazing.

Owemjiiiiiiiii! Thank you so much for this. Your video was out when I tried to search on Google on how to make a woodblock print. Your is so easy to understand and it would be easy for me to explain it in the class since I was assigned in Ukiyo-e(Japanese print). Thank you so much.

I started my first few Japanese prints on my own as well. I source my own cherry wood from old limbs and logs, resale them and flatten them with a planer all by hand. I have some woodworking skills that I’ve been working on. I’ve been using public domain images but can’t work up the courage to draw my own images yet.

Hey, please don't take this the wrong way, if you are homophobic, but you are SUPER cute~! (I mean this as a compliment, btw.) Also, thank you very much for this video series. I have made hanga with rubber blocks before, but I'm about to make my first one using an actual wood block, so I appreciate your videos very much.

What size is your wood block verses the actual print?

The woodblock just needs to be large enough to fit the print outline and the registration marks. The distance between the outline and the registration marks will determine how large the border around your print will be. Therefore, at a minimum I would add about 1.5-2 cm to the desired print dimensions to determine the minimum wood block size. I hope that is helpful!
