How to make a Woodblock Print, Part 1: Designing (Japanese art form)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part 1: Learn how to create a Japanese woodblock print at home! This tutorial series will show you step-by-step how to make your first print without big spending on materials. I was inspired to make this series due to my past experiences. When I was new to this hobby, I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get started without an excess of expensive supplies. With many possible technique variants, I also got lost in the research rather than jumping right in. In this video, I show what I hope is a more manageable approach to this art form. Using my experience, I tried to select the most simple and effective techniques to start with. I hope to give anyone interested in this hobby the confidence to start as soon as possible.
Part 1 of this series covers print design and planning, wood preparation, registration mark carving, and design transfer. After this video you should be ready to start carving the first block of your print. In the next video I hope to cover the entire carving process! Please let me know if you have any questions or recommendations in the comments. I would also appreciate a like or subscription to help my channel grow!

Materials List for Part 1
------------------------------------------------
Drawing Materials - Printer-paper, pencil, ruler, and some kind marker
Nori (rice paste) - There are several options on Amazon, but this is the product that I would purchase: www.amazon.com/Yamato-Nori-Ri...
Carving Tools - I recommend starting with a cheap set of carving tools; I ended up using a cheap set from Michael's for my first year. Most importantly, try to cover the 3 basic types of tools that I described in the video. Here is the link to a set that looks similar to the one I used: www.amazon.com/Beginners-Prot...
Baren - You may not end up needing this for Part 1, but you will definitely need it later on in the process. Cheap barens can be found on many websites. Here is the link to one I saw for reference: www.amazon.com/Yasutomo-Fibre...
Wood - You can get pretty creative. Different woods will give you different appearances. If you want a print without grain or texture, choose one with tight grain, no porosity, and very flat.
Sandpaper- As a guideline, sand the block down to ~ 800-1000 grit. Make sure to step down grit in multiple levels to achieve a good surface finish.

I was pretty shook with all the professional how-tos online. This definitely made me believe this hobby is possible for a plebeian like myself, and affordable!

Thank you for the comment. I’m really happy to see feedback like this because it was my goal exactly! You should definitely give it a try sometime! I think that the woodblock community is actually very strong right now. A lot of people (like myself) have been inspired/learned from David Bull, and it definitely seems to be constantly growing. I haven’t been in it for too long so I can’t say that for sure. But at least it feels like that!

What a great video. I like the art style of Japanese woodblock prints. It reminds me of ink and watercolor illustrations. I would recommend David Bull's channel. He works with dedication. It is very motivating to listen to him and see him work (carve Japanese woodblock prints). Thank you again, for this wonderful tutorial for newcomers, like myself, to Japanese woodblock.

For my graduation work, I plan on transforming a European painting into the style of Ukiyo e, carve it and write about it. Since I’m in Japan rn, I already got so many tools, original prints and a meeting with Dave Bull, but this video series helps me the most, thanks a lot
