This is undoubtedly the most inspiring and helpful filmmaking tutorial. I'm 16 and I'm really into the whole western theme as well as low budget filmmaking. Congratulations on your film and your sheer skill. You've 100% inspired me, thank you

A COUPLE corrections. Westerns were not typically color graded with a sepia look. I don't remember ever seeing any western like that, except maybe for a flashback scene. Also, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly WAS NOT shot in anamorphic. It was shot with spherical lenses in Techniscope, which only advanced the frame by 2 perforations of film at a time, proving the wide screen image and cutting the amount of film used in half. It also enabled close-ups, which anamorphic cannot do because anamorphic lenses cannot focus that close. This is how Leone was able to do all his close-ups, and extreme close-ups.

@@joelgarman - I'm doing all my research in anticipation of doing a Western film. I've watched them all my life (I'm 59) but only from an entertainment aspect. I would like the capture the look that Leone got in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, so I've been doing all my research particularly on that film. However, I've been analyzing a bunch of other Westerns too. It's going to be another year of two before it happens, and I still have to write a script. I've been a filmmaker for 17 years now. This will be the first Western I've done and I really want to capture that Leone look.

@@Doctordoom128 Easy bro, grab any camera you have and just start filming things, dont be afraid to make some really shitty stuff and dont try to start out by wanting a feature, just grab some friends and make like a 1 minute thing. You just build on to it over time, dont worry about gear either at the start.

No, Western films ARE NOT always about the hero vs. the villain. Even though you mentioned The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and I am sure you've also seen the Fist Full of Dollars and A Few Dollars More movies, notice in those movies there is no "hero." Everyone is a villain. None of the main characters is a good, moral, law abiding person/hero. Clint Eastwood is not a moral, honest "do-gooder." He might not be as mean, immoral, and greedy as some others, but he does possess those traits, and those are not the traits of a classic "hero." However, thank you for making a video featuring the mistakes you made on your own film. That is how we all learn.

Thanks for the comment! I totally agree as well. My overview here was pretty broad across the whole of production. It would be great to do another breakdown video on western and genre storylines

Damn the torpedoes! Wont work for me. I live in Hawaii. Maybe a Captain Cook death scene where the Hawaiians chop his body up for its powerful "Mana" Hawaiian Chief was taken by Captain Cook himself who demanded the stolen skiff be returned. In the crazy excitement of Captain Cook losing his temper and physically wrestling the Hawaiian King into his grasp and DEMANDING the skiff be returned, at which point one of the Hawaiian Kings closest Captains lunges at Captain Cook with a long knife, penetrating Captain Cooks heart
